A digital-only game is sold online without a retail disc or cartridge edition. You can usually buy and install it through a platform account, but what you can keep doing later depends on the game’s license, DRM, download policy, and server requirements. Digital delivery does not automatically mean a game needs a live server, and a physical disc is not automatically a complete, offline copy.
What changes when a game has no physical edition?
You get the game through a store or platform account instead of buying a retail copy. That can make purchase and installation convenient, but removes the physical edition’s tangible disc or cartridge and the option of buying that particular edition used, lending it, or reselling it. Those practical differences do not settle whether the game will remain accessible: that depends on the specific terms and technical requirements.

The word “digital” describes how the game is delivered. It does not tell you whether it can be played offline, transferred between accounts, or redownloaded indefinitely. Likewise, “physical” does not guarantee the disc contains every update or that the game will work without an account or online service.
Do you really own a digital game?
In ordinary conversation, players say they buy or own a digital game. Legally and technically, a purchase may instead grant a license to access the content under the seller’s terms. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission explains that access can depend on an active account or a platform continuing to operate, and that DRM can restrict how content is used. Its April 18, 2024 guidance recommends checking the seller’s terms and considering how long you need access: FTC guidance on digital items.
#1 Best Overall
- Marvel’s Wolverine is a new action-packed adventure from Insomniac Games
- Play as Wolverine and Ravage enemies with explosive brutality and unleash razor-sharp adamantium claws to deploy fast, fluid attacks and overcome impossible odds
- An Original, Emotionally Charged Story. Beneath Wolverine’s gruff exterior and violent temperament is a man fighting for a cause greater than himself
- A Global, Adrenaline-Fueled Journey where you slice into enemies across detailed locales such as the frosted Canadian Wilderness, the narrow streets of Tokyo, and the high and low districts of the island nation of Madripoor
Before buying, check the store’s terms for account requirements, device or platform limits, offline play, and what happens to access if the service changes. “Buy” on a store page does not by itself answer those questions.
What happens if a game is delisted?
Delisting means a store stops offering a game to new buyers. It is different from removing access for people who already bought it, and different again from shutting down the game’s servers. Whether existing buyers can still download or play a delisted title depends on the relevant platform policy and the game’s own requirements; there is no single rule established here that applies to every store.
- New purchases: A delisted game may no longer be available to buy from that store.
- Redownloads: Whether prior buyers can download it again depends on the platform’s account and download policy.
- Playing: If the game relies on a server that later closes, some or all of its functions may stop working even if it remains installed.
The FTC’s account- and platform-dependency guidance describes why continued access is not guaranteed in every case, but it does not establish a universal redownload policy for all platforms.

- Reawaken a Classic – Resident Evil 4 preserves the essence of the original game, now reconstructed using Capcom’s proprietary RE Engine to deliver realistic visuals and additional narrative depth to the iconic story that was not possible at the time of the original release.
- Modernized Gameplay – The team from 2019’s Resident Evil 2 returns to build upon the series’ modern approach to survival horror. Engage in frenzied combat with the Ganados villagers, explore a European village gripped by madness, and solve puzzles to access new areas and collect useful items for Leon and Ashley’s constant struggle to survive.
- Overwhelming Hordes – Face hordes of rabid enemies that threaten to overwhelm Leon with even more diverse methods of attack than in the original release.
- Survive on a Knife’s Edge – Years of intense training have taught Leon new ways to use his knife, helping to even the odds against the unrelenting onslaught of enemies. By parrying enemy attacks, you can avoid debilitating damage and evade lunging enemies seeking to grab Leon and hold him in place. Make smart use of scavenged knives to deliver precise finishing moves on vulnerable enemies, and even use the element of surprise to quietly dispatch unsuspecting foes before they break.

Can you still play after the servers shut down?
It depends on what the game uses the servers for. A single-player game that runs locally may remain playable without an ongoing connection; a game that requires authentication, multiplayer services, or other publisher-hosted functions may lose some or all of its functionality when those services end. Digital distribution itself does not make a game server-dependent.
The European Commission has noted that modern games often rely on publishers’ servers and can become partly or entirely unplayable when support ends. Its June 16, 2026 statement concerns server-dependent games, not every digital game: European Commission statement on the disabling of video games.
For a specific title, look for an internet-connection requirement, an offline mode, and any account or authentication requirement. A physical copy does not answer these questions on its own: the disc or cartridge may still need a download, account, or server.

Is a physical copy better for preservation?
A physical edition gives you a tangible copy and may offer a used-market route, but it is not preservation-proof. What the disc or cartridge contains, whether updates or additional files are required, and whether the game depends on external services vary by release. A digital copy may, in turn, work offline after installation. Compare the actual edition rather than assuming one format is always safer.

Long-term preservation also requires more than keeping a consumer copy. The Library of Congress identifies materials such as source code, finished builds, distribution files, software and platform dependencies, documentation, metadata, and access-control details as relevant to preserving software and games. Where a copy is absent or important online dependencies cannot be recreated, a video recording may serve as a substitute for a preservation copy. See the Library of Congress Recommended Formats Statement for software and video games.

Sony’s announced PlayStation change
In a July 1, 2026 PlayStation.Blog post, Sony said physical disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will end starting in January 2028. Sony said new releases after that date will be available through PlayStation Store and retailers in digital formats only. The announcement does not affect PlayStation games released, or to be released, before January 2028 in disc format. This is Sony’s stated policy for new PlayStation-console games, not a rule for the wider games industry. Sony’s announcement on PlayStation.Blog.

European Union consumer protections and next steps
In its June 2026 statement, the European Commission said EU consumer law can require information about the duration of digital content and conditions for termination, and may provide remedies, including proportionate refunds, if content does not conform to the contract. The Commission also said EU law did not specify how long such content must be supplied or require games to remain playable after commercial provision ended. It planned to engage consumers and publishers by the end of 2026 to explore improved standards. This is a dated EU position, not a worldwide rule; check for later Commission action before relying on it.
U.S. preservation exemptions are narrow
U.S. copyright regulations provide limited exemptions for certain video-game preservation and restoration activities when authentication-server support has ceased. Under 37 CFR § 201.40(b)(19), specified cases include restoring a lawfully acquired complete game for personal local play, and eligible preservation by libraries, archives, and museums subject to listed restrictions. The rule also covers certain complete games no longer reasonably available for eligible institutional preservation. It is not general permission to bypass DRM, make public copies, or distribute games. For a particular situation, get legal advice specific to the facts and jurisdiction.
