For a straightforward, human-readable pytest report, evaluate pytest-html first. Choose Allure Pytest if your team wants its result-data and report-generation workflow and is prepared to install the Allure command-line tool and Java. If a CI server needs machine-readable test results, pytest’s built-in JUnit XML output serves that separate purpose; it is not an HTML report.
Start with the output your pipeline needs
Choose by the report’s audience and how the results will be used, rather than assuming every project needs the same plugin:

- People need a readable report file: pytest-html is specifically intended to generate HTML reports from pytest results.
- You need one shareable HTML file: pytest-html documents a self-contained option, but attachments and images can affect whether everything displays as expected.
- People need visibility before the run finishes: pytest-html documents report generation as tests finish.
- A CI server needs structured test results: pytest’s built-in JUnit XML output is intended for Jenkins and other CI servers.
- You want a result-data workflow with richer metadata and attachments: Allure Pytest may suit you, provided its additional setup is acceptable.
A pipeline can produce both HTML for people and JUnit XML for CI ingestion if it needs both. The documentation describes distinct output purposes; it does not prescribe a universal combination.
What pytest-html offers
pytest-html’s user guide documents HTML reports, report streaming, self-contained output, customization, extra content, and redaction of environment values. That makes it a sensible first option when the main deliverable is a report that a person can open.
#1 Best Overall
Streaming during a run
To generate report results as tests finish, the guide documents this pytest configuration:
[pytest]
generate_report_on_test = True
Whether that timing is useful depends on your workflow: confirm that the report produced during a run is accessible where and when your team needs it.
Rank #2
Making a self-contained report
The documented command is:
pytest --html=report.html --self-contained-html
By default, multiple assets, including CSS and images, are stored separately. The project warns that images added as files or links may not work as expected in a self-contained report. If your report uses screenshots or other extras, open the generated artifact and verify that they render before relying on a single-file handoff.
Customization and environment data
The guide documents customization through CSS, a report-title hook, result-table hooks, and extra content. Its Environment section is provided by pytest-metadata. Before publishing a report, inspect that section for sensitive values; pytest-html documents the environment_table_redact_list configuration option for redacting environment values with regular expressions.
When to consider Allure Pytest
Allure’s pytest guide describes a workflow that writes result data to a directory and then generates or serves a report. It also covers metadata, test organization, steps, parameters, screenshots, and file attachments. This can be a better fit when those features and Allure’s result-data model match how your team wants to work.
Allure requires more setup than simply producing a pytest HTML file: its guide calls for the Allure CLI, which requires Java, as well as the allure-pytest integration. The documented sequence is:
Rank #4
- Install Java and the Allure command-line tool.
- Install the integration with
pip install allure-pytest. - Run pytest with
--alluredir allure-resultsto write result data. - Generate an HTML report with
allure generate, or create and open one withallure serve.
Those documented capabilities do not establish that Allure is faster, universally better for large suites, or compatible with every CI provider. Treat provider-specific behavior as something to verify in your own pipeline.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteKeep JUnit XML separate from HTML reporting
Pytest documents pytest --junit-xml=path as a way to produce XML result files readable by Jenkins and other CI servers. Use it when the pipeline needs that machine-readable output. It does not replace an HTML report for people; add a separate HTML output if the team needs one too.
Best Value
A practical selection sequence
- Identify whether the consumer is a person opening a report, a CI server ingesting results, or both.
- For a basic human-readable HTML report, assess pytest-html first.
- If the report must be a single file, test
--self-contained-htmlwith the attachments and images your project actually includes. - If visibility during a long run matters, evaluate
generate_report_on_test = Truein the real CI workflow. - If structured report data, metadata, steps, or attachments matter, evaluate Allure’s workflow and account for its CLI and Java prerequisite.
- Add
--junit-xml=pathif the pipeline also needs the documented CI-readable XML result file. - Inspect environment content and configure redaction before publishing reports that might expose sensitive values.
How far the comparison can take you
The official pytest plugin catalog can help you discover other reporting packages, including an agent for sending results to Report Portal. It is a catalog, not a comparative review, so it does not establish which listed plugin is best by current quality, maintenance, features, or CI compatibility. The official documentation cited here likewise does not compare performance or settle artifact retention, publication, and access controls for a particular CI provider; check those requirements against your provider’s documentation and configuration.
