If the live encoder disconnects, it stops sending the feed to YouTube. YouTube’s guidance reviewed here does not specify a universal reconnect window, guarantee that the event stays open for a particular length of time, or say exactly what viewers will see during the interruption. For a 24/7 children’s stream, treat recovery as something to configure and test—not as a promise of uninterrupted playback.
What a disconnect means for the stream
The encoder sends video and audio to YouTube using a YouTube Live server URL and stream key. YouTube describes the key as the credential that tells the encoder where to send the feed and allows YouTube to accept it. If the encoder loses its connection, that feed stops reaching YouTube.

YouTube’s published setup guidance does not establish a fixed grace period for reconnecting, say precisely when a live event will end after signal loss, or guarantee a particular viewer-facing result such as buffering, a slate, or an immediate end screen. Viewers may therefore experience an interruption, but the official guidance cited here does not define exactly what they will see.

What auto-start and auto-stop do—and do not establish
YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop settings let an operator start or stop streaming from the encoder. The documentation reviewed does not say these controls guarantee that a stream will recover after an unexpected encoder disconnect. Do not treat them as a failover plan.

How to prepare and test encoder failover
- Set up a backup encoder. Keep it ready to send the stream using the appropriate YouTube Live server URL and stream key. To reduce the chance that the same fault disables both encoders, assess whether the backup is independent of the primary encoder’s hardware, power, network, and other failure points.
- Test the handoff before relying on it. YouTube’s live-streaming tips instruct operators to stop the primary encoder or unplug its Ethernet cable, then make sure the player rolls over to the backup encoder. A configured backup is not enough: verify the player actually switches.
- Watch the stream as a viewer. Check the live preview and confirm that the stream remains accessible from channel and watch pages and on mobile. YouTube recommends monitoring audio and video quality continuously.
- Check the recording path. Verify that local archive files exist and are growing. For a continuous broadcast, plan how you will preserve the full recording separately rather than assuming YouTube will create one complete archive.
How to handle a 24/7 stream’s archive
YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A 24/7 event exceeds that stated threshold, and the guidance reviewed does not promise a complete archive for the entire event. Plan separate recording and archive handling if you need to retain the whole broadcast.
When an encoder will not start or reconnect
If the encoder reports a startup error, check that its stream key matches the one shown in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube’s stream troubleshooting guidance advises checking the key there and updating the encoder if needed. Then confirm the live preview and viewer-facing playback rather than assuming that a successful encoder connection means the stream is accessible.
