A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11When an application needs RAM, ZFS can reclaim memory from its Adaptive Replacement Cache (ARC). Reclaim evicts cached data and metadata, not the only stored copy of your files. The operating system may take time to pressure a warm ARC, so lowering an ARC limit does not necessarily make free memory appear immediately.
The practical result is a trade-off: applications get more predictable memory headroom, while ZFS may need more disk I/O when evicted blocks are requested again. The exact timing and controls depend on your operating system and OpenZFS version.

ARC is a cache, not your data’s only copy
The ARC is ZFS’s in-memory cache for recently and frequently used data and metadata. ZFS also keeps the authoritative blocks in its storage pool; removing an entry from ARC is therefore a cache eviction, not deletion of a file or dataset. A later read can fetch the block from the pool and place it back in memory.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsOn FreeBSD, the Handbook explains that ZFS keeps blocks in their compressed on-disk form in ARC and decompresses them when they are accessed. That makes ARC consumption useful for both data and metadata, but it also means the amount of RAM used by ARC is not a direct count of uncompressed application data. See the FreeBSD Handbook’s ZFS chapter for the platform description.

Why a large ARC reading can be normal
ARC grows on demand until it reaches its target maximum. A storage-focused host that has no competing memory demand may therefore use much of its RAM for cache. A large ARC value, by itself, does not indicate a leak or a fault. Judge it alongside application behavior, available-memory or reclaim indicators, and the ARC’s target maximum.
What happens when an application asks for memory
- Application demand increases. A database, virtual machine, jail, or ordinary process requests pages from the operating system.
- The operating system signals memory pressure. Reclaim mechanisms look for memory that can be released without losing persistent data. ARC is designed to participate because its contents are recoverable cache.
- ARC entries are evicted as needed. Frequently useful entries are retained preferentially by ARC’s replacement policy, while less useful data and metadata can leave first. Evicted blocks remain in the ZFS pool.
- The application receives memory, subject to overall system limits. If pressure is severe or another subsystem is also consuming RAM, reclaim may not make every workload perform well.
- Future reads may be slower. If an application or ZFS requests an evicted block, it must be read from storage again and cached anew. The usual symptom is reduced cache effectiveness and more storage activity, not lost data.
The FreeBSD documentation summarizes the key behavior: “The ARC yields memory under pressure, but on systems that share RAM between ZFS and other large consumers such as databases, virtual machines, or jails, the competition can cause uneven performance on both sides.”
Why changing the maximum does not instantly free RAM
zfs_arc_max (or the corresponding FreeBSD sysctl) is a ceiling, not an immediate eviction command. OpenZFS documents that lowering the value below the ARC’s current size does not, by itself, force the cache to shrink; memory pressure must cause reclaim. A warm cache can consequently remain close to its previous size for a while after the limit is reduced.
FreeBSD gives an illustrative cap of 8 GB using:
sysctl vfs.zfs.arc.max=8G
The Handbook says that this change takes effect immediately as a new maximum, while releasing memory from a warm ARC happens gradually. The 8 GB number is an example of syntax and behavior, not a generally safe setting for every machine. There is no documented universal reclaim time because it varies with workload, installed memory, operating-system behavior, and the amount of cache that must be discarded.

OpenZFS also allows the maximum to be changed dynamically, but its documentation says a running system cannot return the parameter to zero. A zero value means “derive the limit from installed memory” when the module parameter is initialized; it is not a value you can restore dynamically after setting an explicit limit. Consult the version-specific OpenZFS module-parameter documentation before scripting a change.
Default limits changed in OpenZFS 2.3.0
Do not apply older advice that treats one ARC formula as universal. In current OpenZFS documentation, a zero zfs_arc_max lets the system derive a limit from installed memory. Since OpenZFS 2.3.0, the documented calculation on every platform is the larger of:
- installed memory minus 1 GiB; or
- five-eighths (5/8) of installed memory.
Before 2.3.0, Linux and FreeBSD used different documented defaults. Therefore, identify the OpenZFS release and operating system before comparing a host with an older guide or changing a parameter. A statement such as “ARC defaults to half of RAM” is not current universal guidance.
How to see whether ARC is actually yielding memory
FreeBSD
FreeBSD’s Handbook says the memory summary in top(1) shows the current ARC size. The kernel statistics are also available through kstat.zfs.misc.arcstats. These commands expose the current size, target maximum, hits, and misses:

sysctl kstat.zfs.misc.arcstats.hits
sysctl kstat.zfs.misc.arcstats.misses
The filesystems/zfs-stats utility can provide a broader summary of the same statistics. Record values during normal operation and again while the application is under its real workload; a single snapshot cannot show whether reclaim is occurring.
Linux
On Linux, OpenZFS exposes ARC statistics in /proc/spl/kstat/zfs/arcstats. The c_max field is the documented way to verify the current ARC maximum. For a quick inspection:
grep -E '^(size|c_max|hits|misses) ' /proc/spl/kstat/zfs/arcstats
OpenZFS documents zarcstat for observing ARC behavior; releases before OpenZFS 2.4.0 commonly called the tool arcstat. Use the name supplied by your installed release rather than assuming both commands exist.
Interpreting a size below the maximum
An ARC size lower than c_max has at least two ordinary explanations: the cache has not yet grown to its ceiling, or memory demand has caused it to give pages back. Compare the values over time with workload activity, operating-system pressure or reclaim indicators, and the application’s latency or allocation failures. The size alone cannot distinguish those cases.

Choosing an ARC cap on a shared host
A cap is useful when ZFS competes with large, less-reclaimable consumers and you need a more predictable memory budget. A lower ceiling leaves more potential headroom for a database, virtual machines, or jails, but it also reduces the amount of frequently used ZFS data that can remain in RAM. If the working set no longer fits, repeated reads can incur more storage latency.
There is no application-independent “correct” percentage or fixed number. The appropriate value depends on installed RAM, the pool and metadata footprint, read patterns, the other services’ peaks, and whether storage latency is acceptable. Treat a cap as a workload-balance decision, then validate it with measurements rather than adopting the Handbook’s 8 GB example as a recommendation.

| Parameter | What it controls | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
zfs_arc_max |
Maximum ARC size, in bytes, on documented OpenZFS Linux and FreeBSD platforms. | It can be changed dynamically. Reducing it below the current ARC size does not force immediate shrinking without memory pressure. A zero value derives a memory-based limit at initialization; a running system cannot set it back to zero. |
zfs_arc_sys_free |
The amount of memory ARC should try to leave free for the system. | When set to zero, OpenZFS documents a target equal to the greater of 512 KiB and one-sixty-fourth of system memory. The setting can be changed dynamically. |
zfs_arc_shrinker_seeks |
On Linux, changes the relative cost assigned to ARC eviction compared with other kernel subsystems. | The documented default is 2, and the setting is made before the module loads. It is not a portable FreeBSD control. |
| FreeBSD ARC names | vfs.zfs.arc.max and kstat.zfs.misc.arcstats expose the corresponding control and statistics. |
Do not substitute Linux module-parameter names for FreeBSD sysctl names. Check the FreeBSD documentation for the release you run. |
Full parameter definitions, including platform and release notes, are maintained in the OpenZFS Module Parameters reference. The OpenZFS zfs(4) manual is another useful reference for module-level behavior.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A measurement-first tuning procedure
- Identify the platform and release. Record whether the host is FreeBSD or Linux and the OpenZFS version. Parameter names and default calculations are version-sensitive.
- Establish a baseline. Capture ARC
size, target (c_max), hits, and misses during normal operation. Also record application memory use, available memory, swap activity, and storage latency using the operating system’s normal monitoring tools. - Reproduce the real peak. Exercise the database, virtual machines, jails, or other consumers at the load that causes concern. Watch whether ARC size falls, whether application allocations fail, and whether storage activity rises.
- Change one control deliberately. If the evidence shows memory competition, choose a conservative ARC ceiling or another documented platform control. Apply the correct FreeBSD sysctl or Linux module-parameter mechanism for that host; do not mix names from different operating systems.
- Allow for gradual reclaim. A lower ceiling may not change resident ARC immediately. Continue observing until the workload creates enough pressure for reclaim, rather than judging the change seconds after it is made.
- Compare outcomes. Keep the setting only if application headroom improves without unacceptable cache misses, storage latency, or ZFS service degradation. Otherwise, revisit the workload’s memory requirements and the cap.
Common symptoms and their explanations
“ARC uses most of RAM, so something is broken.”
Not necessarily. ARC is supposed to grow when memory is available. Look for sustained application pressure, reclaim activity, failed allocations, or degraded latency before treating a large cache as a fault.
Best Value
“I lowered the limit, but free memory did not rise.”
That is expected when there is no immediate memory pressure or when the cache is warm. The new value constrains future growth; reclaim can be gradual rather than an instant purge.
“The ARC is below its maximum.”
It may simply be a young or lightly used cache, or it may have already yielded pages. Trend the value and correlate it with pressure indicators and workload behavior.
“The application and storage both became erratic.”
Shared-RAM competition can produce uneven performance on both sides. A cap may protect application headroom, but an overly small ARC can increase reads from storage. Reassess the working set and measure before making another change.
Recommended Free Tools
“A Linux command from a guide does not work on FreeBSD.”
Use the platform’s documented names: FreeBSD exposes vfs.zfs.arc.max and kstat.zfs.misc.arcstats, while Linux uses OpenZFS module parameters and /proc/spl/kstat/zfs/arcstats. Verify the installed release’s documentation before applying any command.
