How to Check Tyre Pressure and Wheel Alignment to Reduce Uneven Tyre Wear

Check tyre pressure yourself with an accurate gauge, using the vehicle maker’s cold-pressure specification on the door placard or in the owner’s manual. Inspect the entire tread and watch for pulling, vibration or persistent uneven wear. Those observations can reveal a problem, but only a qualified technician with alignment equipment can identify a faulty wheel-alignment angle or a related steering, suspension or braking fault.

Correct pressure and prompt diagnosis help prevent avoidable wear. They do not guarantee a particular increase in tyre life, and no single tread pattern proves that alignment is the cause.

What you can check at home—and what requires a technician

A driver can establish whether each tyre is inflated to the vehicle manufacturer’s specified pressure and can spot visible tread or sidewall damage. A technician is needed to measure wheel-alignment angles and determine whether worn steering, suspension or braking components are contributing to the problem.

Check What it can establish Equipment or expertise
Cold inflation pressure Whether the tyre matches the vehicle’s specified operating pressure for its load An accurate pressure gauge and an air supply if adjustment is needed
Visual tread and sidewall inspection Uneven wear, cuts, bulges, exposed cords or other obvious damage Good lighting and a view of the whole tyre, including the spare where fitted
Wheel alignment Whether measured alignment angles are within the vehicle maker’s limits and whether adjustment is possible Alignment equipment and a qualified tyre or vehicle technician
Brake, steering and suspension diagnosis Whether another mechanical fault is causing wear, pulling, noise or vibration Professional inspection and, when appropriate, component testing

Uneven wear is therefore a reason to investigate, not a diagnosis by itself. The UK Highway Code says: “Excessive or uneven tyre wear may be caused by faults in the braking or suspension systems, or wheels which are out of alignment.”

Find the correct pressure before you touch the valve

Use the vehicle placard or owner’s manual

Look for the tyre-information placard on the driver’s door frame, door pillar, fuel-filler flap or another location specified by the vehicle maker. If it is not there, use the owner’s manual. The number is the recommended cold inflation pressure for that vehicle, often with separate figures for front and rear tyres and sometimes different figures for normal and heavy loads. Follow the row that matches how the vehicle is being used.

Manufacturer specifications are the target. The maximum pressure moulded into a tyre sidewall is a limit associated with the tyre, not a substitute for the vehicle’s recommended operating pressure. NHTSA explains this distinction in its TireWise tyre-safety guidance and its summer-driving advice.

Keep the units consistent

Placards and gauges may use psi, bar or kPa. Read the value in the same unit shown by your gauge, or use the gauge’s built-in unit selector. Do not choose a number simply because it is printed on the tyre; the vehicle placard remains the authority for the required pressure.

How to check tyre pressure step by step

  1. Choose a cold-check time. NHTSA defines a cold tyre for this purpose as one on a vehicle that has not been driven for at least three hours. The UK Highway Code advises checking before a journey. Park on a level surface if possible.
  2. Collect an accurate gauge. A digital or mechanical gauge in good condition is suitable. NHTSA recommends keeping a gauge in the vehicle, so you are not dependent on a dashboard warning or a forecourt gauge.
  3. Read the vehicle specification. Note the required pressure for each axle and the load condition. Some vehicles use different front and rear pressures.
  4. Remove the valve cap. Keep it somewhere clean. Press the gauge straight and firmly onto the valve stem so air is not escaping around the seal. Read the displayed pressure.
  5. Compare the reading with the placard. Measure every road tyre, not just the one that looks low. Check the spare if the vehicle has one and the spare is intended for use.
  6. Add air when the reading is below specification. Add small amounts, remove the gauge, and measure again until the specified cold pressure is reached.
  7. Release air gradually when the reading is above specification. Depress the valve core briefly, measure again, and stop at the vehicle’s target. Avoid holding the valve open for a long time and overshooting.
  8. Replace every valve cap. Caps help keep dirt and moisture away from the valve. Store the gauge and check that no valve is leaking after adjustment.

If a tyre appears seriously underinflated while you are away from home, measure it and inflate it to the vehicle’s recommended cold pressure rather than deliberately letting air out of a warm tyre. Recheck it when a genuinely cold reading is available, because heat from driving raises pressure and can make the immediate reading misleading.

How often to check pressure

Use the interval that applies to your jurisdiction and driving routine. NHTSA says, “You should still conduct a monthly tire pressure check to ensure your tires are always properly inflated.” The UK Highway Code advises weekly checks before a journey. These are safety recommendations, not a universal legal timetable; weather changes, a long trip, carrying a heavy load or a suspected leak justify checking sooner.

A tyre-pressure monitoring system (TPMS) is useful as an alert, but it does not replace manual checks. TPMS is designed to warn of significant underinflation on equipped vehicles; it may not alert you to a gradual pressure difference that is already affecting wear, and it cannot inspect tread or sidewall condition.

Inspect tread and sidewalls for uneven wear

Look across the complete tread width

Turn the steering to improve your view of the front tyres and use a torch if necessary. Examine the inner edge, centre and outer edge of each tread, then inspect the rear tyres from both sides. Run your eyes around the circumference rather than checking only the section that is easiest to see. Compare left and right tyres on the same axle and note whether wear is smooth or appears in patches, ridges or scallops.

Check for damage, not just wear

Look for cuts, cracks, bulges, objects in the tread and any exposed cords. A damaged tyre needs professional safety advice; do not continue normal driving on a tyre with a bulge, exposed cord or serious structural damage while hoping that an alignment check will solve it. The NHTSA tyre-safety page and the New Zealand Transport Agency tyre guidance both emphasise regular condition checks as well as pressure checks.

Record what you see

Photograph an unusual pattern and write down the tyre position, pressure reading and date. This gives the technician a useful history, especially if the wear is developing on only one corner or returns soon after a tyre is replaced.

What uneven wear can—and cannot—tell you

A pattern can indicate that professional investigation is sensible, but it cannot identify the failed alignment angle on its own. Do not treat an inside-edge or outside-edge pattern as proof of one particular alignment fault. Vehicle design, tyre construction, road conditions and worn components can change how a problem appears.

Observation What it means for your next step
One edge is visibly more worn than the rest of the tread Arrange an inspection of alignment and the related steering and suspension parts; the pattern alone does not identify which angle or component is responsible.
Wear differs substantially between left and right tyres on one axle Ask for a comparison of alignment, component condition and pressures on both sides rather than replacing only the visibly worn tyre.
Patchy, scalloped or ridged wear around the circumference Request a professional assessment of wheel, tyre, suspension and balance-related concerns, particularly if vibration or noise is present.
Wear across the tread accompanied by an incorrect pressure reading Correct pressure to the placard specification, then continue monitoring. Persistent or rapidly returning wear still requires an inspection.
Any wear together with a pull, steering-wheel change, vibration or unusual noise Book a qualified inspection promptly; several mechanical causes can produce the same combination of symptoms.

These observations are screening clues, not a home alignment test. A vehicle can have acceptable-looking tread and still have a developing mechanical fault, so handling changes deserve attention even when the pattern is subtle.

Signs that alignment or another mechanical fault needs attention

  • The vehicle consistently veers or pulls on a straight, level road when road camber and wind are not explaining the movement.
  • The steering wheel is no longer centred when the vehicle travels straight.
  • Uneven wear persists after pressures have been corrected.
  • Wear returns quickly after a tyre has been replaced.
  • You notice vibration, droning or a new steering sensation, especially if it changes with speed.
  • A tyre, wheel or suspension component has suffered an impact such as a pothole or kerb strike.

These symptoms do not prove that alignment is out. They justify having a qualified technician inspect alignment together with steering, suspension, braking and tyre condition. The technician can use the vehicle’s service specifications and appropriate equipment to measure the angles; a driver cannot determine those measurements reliably by sight.

Alignment, balancing and pressure are different services

Wheel alignment concerns how the wheels are positioned and how the vehicle tracks. NHTSA describes alignment as helping the vehicle travel straight and helping maximise tyre life. Wheel balancing addresses the distribution of mass as a wheel rotates and is primarily associated with vibration. Balancing does not correct an alignment angle, and an alignment check does not remove a damaged tyre or repair a worn suspension part.

When booking an inspection, describe the actual symptom and ask what will be checked. A useful request is: “Please inspect the uneven wear, verify pressures, check steering and suspension components, and measure wheel alignment.” If vibration is the main complaint, ask that wheel and tyre balance be considered as well. This avoids assuming that every tyre problem is an alignment problem.

What to do at a professional inspection

  1. Explain the history. Tell the technician when the wear or pulling began, whether the vehicle hit a pothole or kerb, when the tyres were fitted, and how often pressures have been checked.
  2. Show the wear pattern. Point out the affected corner or provide photographs. Mention any TPMS warning, vibration, noise or steering-wheel change.
  3. Request a complete condition check. The technician should look beyond alignment to tyres, wheels, steering, suspension and braking components because faults in those systems can also produce excessive or uneven wear.
  4. Have pressure verified before interpreting the result. Measurements should be compared with the vehicle’s placard or manual, including any load-related front/rear difference.
  5. Ask for measured results and the reason for any adjustment. A qualified shop can explain whether an angle is outside the vehicle’s specification, whether adjustment is available, and whether a worn or bent part must be repaired first.
  6. Recheck after repairs. Once a fault is corrected, monitor the tyre and maintain the specified cold pressure. Existing tread cannot be restored; a tyre may need replacement if wear or damage has reached an unsafe condition.

Safety limits and legal considerations

Do not drive normally on a tyre with a cut, bulge, exposed cord or other serious damage. Seek professional tyre-safety advice, and use the vehicle maker’s emergency guidance if the tyre is losing air.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Tread-depth laws and inspection rules differ by country and vehicle category. The UK Highway Code contains UK-specific maintenance guidance, while New Zealand publishes its own tyre information. Do not apply a UK legal tread limit globally; check the rule for the jurisdiction where the vehicle is operated. Regardless of the local legal minimum, replace a tyre that is damaged or no longer safe according to the vehicle and tyre maker’s guidance.

A practical maintenance routine

  • At the applicable interval: measure all tyres cold with a gauge and adjust to the placard or manual specification.
  • Before long journeys or heavy loading: confirm the pressure setting for the planned load and inspect tread and sidewalls.
  • When a TPMS warning appears: measure every tyre as soon as it is safe, look for damage or a leak, and do not reset the warning without finding the cause.
  • Whenever handling changes: note pulling, vibration, noise or a displaced steering wheel and arrange a professional inspection.
  • After an impact or repair: have the affected wheel, tyre, steering and suspension checked rather than assuming that adding air is sufficient.
  • When replacing tyres: ask the technician to compare wear on the remaining tyres and verify that pressures and alignment are appropriate for the vehicle.

Common mistakes that accelerate wear or delay a diagnosis

  • Using the sidewall maximum instead of the vehicle placard pressure.
  • Measuring immediately after driving and treating the warm reading as the cold target.
  • Checking only the tyre that looks low and ignoring the other tyres or the spare.
  • Relying on TPMS as a substitute for a gauge and visual inspection.
  • Assuming one tread pattern proves a particular alignment angle.
  • Paying for alignment without asking whether worn suspension, steering or brake parts must be repaired first.
  • Continuing to drive on a tyre with a bulge, exposed cord or serious structural damage.
  • Applying another country’s legal tread-depth rule to your own vehicle.

Key takeaways

Start with the vehicle’s own cold-pressure specification, not a generic number or the tyre sidewall maximum. Check with a gauge on a cold vehicle, inspect every tread and sidewall, and follow the check interval applicable to your region—NHTSA recommends monthly checks, while the UK Highway Code advises weekly checks before a journey. If uneven wear, pulling, vibration, noise or a steering change persists, have a qualified technician measure alignment and inspect the braking, steering and suspension systems. That combination of routine driver checks and timely professional diagnosis is the dependable way to reduce avoidable uneven wear without guessing at the cause.
