After a trade-in, your old device may be assessed for reuse or recycling; if it is still usable, refurbishment and resale are possible. There is no single guaranteed destination: the outcome depends on the provider, location, model and condition, and providers do not all publish what happens next.
Where does a trade-in phone or device go?
The provider receives the device and may inspect its condition before deciding how to handle it. Apple’s U.S. Trade In page says: “When we receive your device, it will be thoroughly inspected and assessed for reuse or recycling.” That describes Apple’s stated process, not a promise that every device will follow one route. Apple does not publish a universal split between reuse and recycling.

For working electronics more broadly, the Associated Press has reported that devices may be refurbished and resold, while items beyond reuse go through recycling. That is a general market possibility, not proof of the destination of a particular phone or a specific trade-in program.

Either can happen, and the device’s condition and the provider’s process matter. A device suitable for continued use may be considered for reuse; one that cannot be reused may be recycled. A provider may not reveal whether a particular device was resold, used for parts or recycled, and the available sources do not establish a dated industry-wide percentage for any of those outcomes.

To understand a specific offer, look for its stated downstream route and what it does with devices that fail inspection or are ineligible for credit. Do not assume a trade-in is resold just because it works, or that every no-credit device is automatically recycled by the provider.
Can inspection change your trade-in credit?
It can. Apple says it checks whether a received device matches the condition the customer described; if it does not, the credit offered may change. Its U.S. online process generally takes two to three weeks, and Apple says it needs to receive the old device within 14 days after the customer receives the new one. These are Apple’s current U.S. program details, not standard terms for all trade-ins.
Apple says customers may receive a prepaid kit or drop-off instructions; when it sends a kit, packaging materials and instructions are included. Follow the instructions from your own provider, especially for deadlines, packaging and what happens if the inspected condition differs from your estimate.

A no-credit decision does not necessarily mean there is no recycling option. Apple says devices that are not eligible for credit can be recycled at no cost through its program. That is specific to Apple’s offer; check the terms of another provider or local recycling options rather than assuming the same service is included.

How to prepare your device before handing it over
Back up anything you want to keep, then follow the device maker’s current instructions to sign out of accounts and erase the device before shipment or drop-off. Apple’s terms make customers responsible for keeping a backup and removing personal data. Although its regional legal terms say a vendor may reset a received device if personal data is immediately obvious, that is not a substitute for erasing it yourself.

What to check before choosing a trade-in route
- Provider and location: Eligible devices, credit terms, data instructions and recycling services can vary by program and geography.
- Condition and eligibility: Find out whether inspection can revise the offer and what happens if the device does not qualify.
- Mail-in or in-store: Compare the actual return instructions, packaging, handoff method and timing for the route you choose.
- Stated destination: Look for whether the provider says it assesses devices for reuse, refurbishes or resells them, or recycles them. Without comparable published figures, resale or recycling rates cannot be reliably ranked across providers.
