There is no dependable visual checklist that can prove an image was made by AI. Odd details can be a reason to investigate, but polished generated images may look convincing and ordinary editing can create anomalies. Before sharing a questionable image, check its earlier appearances, inspect its provenance if you have the original file, and verify the caption’s claim independently.
Use visual clues to decide what to check next
Google lists garbled text, small-detail errors such as unusual hands or teeth, inconsistent lighting or shadows, and unnatural repetition as possible clues. Look at text, anatomy, reflections, perspective, repeated elements, and whether objects interact plausibly. Treat any oddity as a prompt to investigate—not a pass/fail test: real images can be edited, while generated images may show no obvious flaws. A 2024 guide groups potential artifacts and implausibilities as anatomical, stylistic, functional, physics-related, and sociocultural, and notes that human-visible artifacts are not always present (Google Gemini Apps Help; 2024 guide).

Trace where the image appeared
Search the image—or a distinctive crop—with Google Lens or another reverse-image search tool. Look for earlier copies, the original publisher, and reporting or fact-checks that address the image and its caption. Google’s About this image feature is designed to show when an image or similar images were first indexed, where it may have first appeared, and other sites that used it (Google’s announcement). An older copy can expose a recycled or miscaptioned image, but search results alone do not establish whether AI made it.
Check provenance if you have the original file
Content Credentials can record who created or edited media and whether AI tools were used, when the tool and file format support them. A compatible viewer may show a signed provenance record; Google says valid credentials report the company providing and cryptographically signing the information. That record describes a file’s origin or history, not whether the scene is real or the caption is true (Google Gemini Apps Help).
#1 Best Overall
- AI-Powered Smart Signal Analysis – This camera detector, built in intelligent AI chip processes RF signals in real time, reducing background interference and false alarms for more reliable detection of hidden wireless cameras, audio bugs, and GPS trackers. The adjustable sensitivity dial lets you fine-tune scanning levels to match different environments – from busy hotels to quiet homes – so you get precise alerts without constant beeping.
- 4-in-1 Detection with 5-Level Sensitivity – As a reliable hidden camera detectors, it scans for wireless cameras, hidden pinhole lenses, GPS trackers, and magnetic field devices, giving you complete coverage against various surveillance threats. The 5-level adjustable sensitivity lets you dial in the right detection range for any setting – turn it up for weak signals in large spaces, or lower it in crowded areas to reduce interference. Works great at home, in hotel rooms, and while traveling, so you always know your privacy is protected.
- Easy Operation with 4 Modes – With a built-in GPS tracker detector, switch between wireless signal scanning, hidden camera finder, magnetic field detection, and flashlight – all in one compact device. Select between sound or vibration alerts for quiet, discreet scanning in any environment.
- Long Battery Life & Portable Design – Built-in 800mAh rechargeable battery provides up to 25 hours of continuous use. Fully charges in just 1.5 hours via USB. Small enough to carry anywhere – weighs next to nothing, so you can take it on every trip.
For example, Adobe’s browser-based Content Authenticity Inspect tool is intended to show who created content, how it was created or edited, and whether generative AI was used. Adobe’s help page, last updated September 2, 2025, says uploads to its beta Inspect tool are not stored; check the tool’s current availability and compatibility before relying on it (Adobe help).
Interpret verification tools narrowly
Different tools look for different signals. A positive match may establish something about a supported watermark or credential; a negative result is not proof that an image is human-made. Screenshots, edits, unsupported formats, and systems outside a tool’s coverage can all limit what it can detect.

| Approach | What it checks | What a result can establish—and what it cannot |
|---|---|---|
| Gemini image verification | Signed-in users can upload one image at a time, subject to Google’s account, file-size, format, and other limits. SynthID checks for content from Google AI tools; Content Credentials can provide compatible provenance and edit-history information. | A detected SynthID watermark or valid credential can provide information about supported Google-origin content or the recorded provenance. No SynthID result does not rule out another AI system; multiple alterations can degrade watermark detection. A credential does not establish that the depicted event is true. See Google’s guidance. |
| OpenAI Verify | Checks uploaded files for supported C2PA credentials and SynthID signals associated with OpenAI-generated content. | A detected signal indicates likely origin from OpenAI tools, not accuracy or correct context. No signal means only that the service found no supported signal in that file; metadata may have been removed or tampered with, a watermark degraded, or the content may come from another provider or an older model. See OpenAI’s explanation. |
| Adobe Content Authenticity Inspect | A browser-based inspector for compatible Content Credentials and their creator and creation/edit information. | It can show recorded provenance, including whether generative AI was used, when such information is available. It is not a universal AI detector or a fact-check; check current availability and compatibility. See Adobe’s help page. |
| Reverse image search | Searches the web for the image or similar images and their appearances. | Can help find earlier copies, sources, and context, but does not by itself determine whether AI generated the image. Google describes its About this image feature here. |
Google announced in May 2026 that C2PA credential verification was rolling out in Gemini, with Search and Chrome planned for the following months. Availability may differ by product surface, so do not assume every Google tool offers the feature (Google’s announcement). A January 2025 Australian Cyber Security Centre report listed ExifTool as able to detect, but not verify, Content Credentials; that dated report is not a current compatibility list (ACSC report).
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Verify the caption before you share
- Pause. Be especially cautious when a dramatic image accompanies a breaking-news claim.
- Search for context. Use Google Lens or another reverse-image tool to find older copies, original publishers, and reputable reporting or fact-checks.
- Inspect provenance where possible. If you have the original file rather than a screenshot, check for Content Credentials with a compatible viewer.
- Examine suspicious details. Review text, anatomy, repetitions, reflections, shadows, perspective, and object interactions as clues—not proof.
- Check the underlying claim separately. Look for reliable reporting or original sources confirming the event. If important facts remain unsupported, do not share the image as authentic.
A provenance record and a fact check answer different questions. Credentials may indicate how a file was made or edited; they do not show that the event in the picture happened as described. Google’s guidance says credentials cannot tell you whether an image, video, or audio file is definitely AI-generated, while origin and history can inform a decision. OpenAI likewise cautions that detected signals do not establish accuracy or context (Google; OpenAI).
