Changing from Gemini’s free access to a paid plan—or letting a paid plan expire—can change your usage limits, models, and features. It does not, by itself, determine whether your saved chats are retained. For personal accounts, chat retention is controlled separately through Gemini Apps Activity, Keep Activity, and deletion settings. Google’s current guidance says chats made with Keep Activity off or in a temporary chat are still retained for 72 hours.
Does canceling a Google AI plan delete your Gemini chats?
Google’s cancellation guidance describes what plan benefits end; it does not say that canceling deletes saved Gemini Apps Activity. In other words, loss of plan access and deletion of chat history are separate matters. Check your activity settings if you want to manage saved chats, rather than assuming a plan change will erase them.

When AI Pro ends, Google says you lose Pro-specific Gemini access, including the ability to start new chats with Pro, continue chats created with Pro, and use Pro-only features. Other benefits in the plan bundle, such as expanded Google One storage and Gemini in Gmail, Docs, and more, may also end. What changes when free access or a paid plan changes?
Plan changes affect access and capacity, not the separate controls for saved activity. Google’s limits page currently describes these relative tiers:

These are relative limits, not a promised number of prompts. Google says limits can change; subscribers who reach a limit may be able to continue chats with Flash-Lite. See Google’s current limits and upgrades page for the latest details.
How Keep Activity affects saved chats
Keep Activity on
With Keep Activity enabled, chats and shared content—such as files, videos, screens, and photos—are saved in Gemini Apps Activity. Google’s Privacy Hub, last updated September 24, 2026, says the default auto-delete period is 18 months. You can change it to 3 months, 36 months, or indefinite, and you can manually delete activity. Google also says conversations reviewed by human reviewers and related data may be retained for up to three years even after activity is deleted. See the Gemini Apps Privacy Hub.

Keep Activity off or use a temporary chat
Turning Keep Activity off does not mean immediate or zero retention. Google says chats made with the setting off and temporary chats are retained with the account for 72 hours to respond, process feedback, and help protect Google, users, and the public. Google says these chats are not used to improve its AI models unless you submit feedback. Temporary chats are not used to train Google’s AI models.
If you submit feedback while Keep Activity is off, Google says it may collect the feedback, the previous 24 hours of chat context, and included content. Details are in Google’s privacy guidance.
How to review or delete Gemini activity
- Check the account type. The activity controls described here cover personal accounts. For a work or school account, a Workspace administrator may control the settings, and you may not be able to change retention or view its period.
- Open Gemini Apps Activity. Review whether Keep Activity is on and which auto-delete period is selected. Google’s Privacy Hub explains the available settings.
- Choose a retention setting or delete activity. Use the available auto-delete choices or manually delete activity if appropriate. Turning Keep Activity off changes how future chats are handled; it does not undo any separate data retention described by Google.
- Check other Google services separately. Deleting Gemini Apps Activity does not delete data saved by other Google services, and changing Gemini settings does not automatically change Web & App Activity or other Google settings. Google says some data may be retained longer for legitimate business or legal purposes. Consult Gemini’s Privacy Hub and Google’s activity-control guidance.
What this means before changing plans
- If you want to retain access to Pro-specific features or chats created with Pro, check which capabilities end when your plan expires.
- If your concern is chat history, review Gemini Apps Activity independently of your subscription.
- If you turn Keep Activity off or use a temporary chat, account retention still lasts 72 hours under Google’s stated policy.
- If you use a managed account, ask your administrator which controls apply.
