Erasing a locked iPhone removes the data stored on the phone and makes it inaccessible. You can put back only what is available in a backup; erasing does not itself remove Activation Lock. If you erase remotely through Find My, the phone remains linked to your Apple Account until Activation Lock is cleared.
What erasing a locked iPhone does to its data
Apple describes erasure as destroying the keys held in the iPhone’s effaceable storage, which makes the device’s user data cryptographically inaccessible. This describes the security effect; it does not mean a particular physical overwrite pattern. Apple’s factory-restore guidance lists examples of erased on-device content, including messages, photos, files, media, passcodes, passwords, and Face ID and Touch ID data. After the erase, the iPhone returns to setup. Apple’s deployment guidance and factory-restore guidance explain these effects.

Keep three things separate: the iPhone’s local data, any backup or separately synced copy, and Activation Lock. Erasing the phone does not establish that copies elsewhere—such as in a backup, cloud service, or another device—have also been deleted.
Can you get the data back after erasing?
Restoring from an existing backup is the supported way to put content and settings back on a newly erased iPhone. It is not the same as recovering data from the erased phone itself. Apple supports restoring from an iCloud or computer backup; what returns depends on the backup’s date and contents. Data added after the backup may be missing. - If you have a usable backup: restore it during setup, or follow Apple’s restore instructions for the backup type.
- If you do not have a backup: Apple’s supported process does not promise a way to retrieve data that existed only on the locked phone after it has been erased.
- If you have an encrypted computer backup but not its password: Apple says that password is required to restore it.
Do not treat a third-party unlock or recovery service’s claim as proof it can recover data from an erased iPhone. The Apple guidance cited here does not establish that such tools can do so.
If you forgot the passcode, erase first and restore if possible
Apple’s supported route for a forgotten passcode is to erase the iPhone using a computer or recovery mode, then set it up again. If you made a backup before the erase, you can restore from it during setup. The available computer app depends on your setup: Finder on a Mac, Apple Devices on Windows, or iTunes in older or software-specific setups. Connect the iPhone with a compatible USB or USB-C cable; the required connector depends on the iPhone and computer models. Follow Apple’s forgotten-passcode instructions for the applicable steps.

What happens when you erase a locked iPhone remotely?
A remote erase through Find My requires Find My to have been enabled before the iPhone was lost. If the phone is offline, the request remains pending; Find My begins erasing it when it next connects to Wi-Fi or cellular. An erase request is therefore not the same as a completed erase. Apple says you can cancel an offline pending request if you recover the phone before it comes online. See Apple’s Find My erase instructions.

When the remote erase completes, the iPhone’s local data is removed, but Activation Lock remains on. Apple states, “When you erase a device remotely using Find My, Activation Lock remains on to protect it.” The Apple Account linked to the device is still needed to reactivate it. Apple’s Activation Lock guidance explains how the lock protects a remotely erased device.

What to do if a used iPhone shows Activation Lock
If setup asks for the previous owner’s Apple Account, the iPhone is still linked to that person’s account. Ask the previous owner to enter their credentials or remove the device from their account before you take ownership. Apple advises buyers not to accept a device that remains protected by Activation Lock. For a device managed by an organization, contact its IT department or manager; Apple also provides a support request process for Activation Lock with proof of purchase.
