If a Wear OS watch face won’t install, first check whether Google Play lists it for your specific watch. If it is listed, troubleshoot the watch’s internet connection, Google account, and companion-app setup. A face missing from the watch is not always a sync failure: some older faces are no longer compatible or may not transfer to a new watch.
First find out whether it’s a compatibility problem or a delivery problem
Search for the face in Google Play with your watch selected as the target device. Google says its Play Store browsing experience shows faces compatible with that device. If the face is unavailable for your watch, treat that as an availability or compatibility issue—not a phone-to-watch sync problem. Google notes that some older faces may not transfer during new-watch setup or backup restoration, and that faces unavailable to download or update may no longer be compatible with Wear OS. If the listing does show the face for your watch, continue with the installation and connection checks below. Don’t rely on unofficial downloads to work around an unavailable listing: Google Play does not offer faces that fail its quality standards.
Install the face for the watch, not just the phone
Installing a phone app does not automatically install its watch face. Use one of these routes to install the face on the watch:

- From the watch: Open Play Store, search for the face, and tap Install.
- From the phone: Open Google Play, find the face, select the watch as the target device if device selection is offered, and install it.
Google’s documented workflow for getting or updating apps requires Wear OS 2 or newer. Not every Android phone app works on Wear OS, so if the watch is missing from the device selector, compatibility may be the reason. Check the watch’s connection and Google account
The watch needs an internet connection over Wi-Fi or LTE to search Play Store and download a face. For broader setup or reconnection problems, keep the phone and watch powered on and close together, and make sure neither is in Airplane mode.

- Confirm the watch can get online over Wi-Fi or LTE, then retry the download.
- Check that the watch is using the Google account you expect. Play Store on the watch uses the account signed in on the watch; an account mismatch can make a paid face or a listing you expect to see appear missing.
- If the face is available for the watch but the download stalls, close and reopen Play Store and try again.

Companion-app steps vary by watch maker and software version. Wear OS 3 watches are not compatible with the generic Wear OS phone app; use the companion app specified by the manufacturer for your model. If you are unsure which app or menu path applies, check the watch maker’s setup instructions rather than following steps written for a different watch generation. Google also cautions that setup steps vary by manufacturer, device, and software version in its setup guidance.

Resync apps or retry a face update
If installation stopped after a permission prompt
If you denied an app permission, Google says the app will not install until that permission is handled. Open the watch maker’s companion app on your phone and use its Resync apps control, if available, to retry the transfer. The exact location depends on the companion app and watch.
If the watch-face app needs an update
On the watch, open Play Store and go to My Apps to see pending app updates; choose Update all to install them. For an update that is failing to download, check Wi-Fi, temporarily turn off Bluetooth, and retry. Keep the watch powered on and connected to Wi-Fi while charging for automatic system-update behavior.

Tell an app update apart from a Wear OS system update
A watch-face app update comes through Play Store. A Wear OS system update follows a separate process in Settings or Play Store, depending on the watch. Use the manufacturer’s instructions for the system-update path that applies to your model. Google describes app and system update checks separately in its Wear OS update guidance.
Restart before considering a factory reset
After updating the relevant apps, restart both the phone and watch, then try the install or update again. Make a factory reset the last resort: it erases the watch’s apps, settings, and data. Before resetting, preserve anything you need and follow the watch maker’s model-specific reset instructions. Google also warns about the data erased by resetting in its setup and reset guidance.
