Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteA cloud data center outage does not automatically erase your data. It can make a service temporarily unavailable, and whether your data remains accessible or recoverable depends on the affected failure area, the specific cloud product, and how your storage and recovery options are configured. Data durability—whether a copy remains stored—is different from availability—whether a service can serve it now.
What an outage can mean for your data
A facility problem may affect one availability zone; a regional outage can disrupt a much larger area. A resource tied to the affected location may be unavailable until service returns. A product configured with copies in other zones or regions may continue serving data or support recovery elsewhere. If no copy covers the relevant failure boundary, data may remain inaccessible or, in some configurations, be permanently lost.

These outcomes are product-specific. A provider’s general statement about infrastructure redundancy does not mean every customer workload has cross-region replication or automatic failover enabled.
How storage location and replication affect the outcome
Google Cloud Storage illustrates why the storage configuration matters. Its documentation describes different behavior for zonal, regional, dual-region, and multi-region buckets. These are Google Cloud Storage details, not guarantees that apply to all cloud services.

| Google Cloud Storage location type | What the documentation says about placement and outages |
|---|---|
| Zonal | Data is not replicated across zones. A zone failure can make it unavailable or permanently lost. |
| Regional | Data is stored redundantly in at least two zones and is designed to tolerate the loss of one zone. |
| Dual-region or multi-region | Data is stored in at least two geographic places and is designed to remain available during a region-wide outage. |
Geographic replication may not be instantaneous. Google says writes to dual-region and multi-region buckets are confirmed after redundant storage in an initial region across at least two zones; geographic replication then occurs asynchronously. For a recent write during a regional failure, the timing of replication is therefore relevant to what is recoverable.
Google publishes a designed annual durability figure of at least 99.999999999% for Cloud Storage across storage classes and location types. That is a product-documentation design figure, not an availability promise or a guarantee against every failure mode. Google also describes checksum revalidation and using redundant data to correct errors. See the Google Cloud Storage availability and durability documentation for the product’s current details.

Will recovery happen automatically?
Not necessarily. The answer depends on the product and the architecture you selected. For example, Amazon Aurora documents automatic failover when configured replicas are available. For a single-instance database, recovery is best effort; cross-region disaster recovery requires promoting a secondary region. These statements apply to Aurora, not every AWS service. See the Amazon Aurora FAQ for its specific recovery behavior.
Microsoft says Azure maintains three healthy replicas in the primary location and that customers can choose the backup-site location. This infrastructure statement does not establish that every Azure service or customer workload has cross-region failover enabled. Check the exact service and its selected storage-redundancy option in Microsoft’s Azure availability-zone guidance.

Microsoft also describes online-service use of hardware, network, and datacenter redundancy, data replication, and automated integrity checking. Its service assurance guidance says online-service business continuity plans are tested at least annually under its ERCM policies. That describes Microsoft’s program, not a test of an individual customer’s recovery readiness. See Microsoft’s resilience and business continuity guidance.
Replication is not the same as a backup
Replication can help keep a service available across an infrastructure failure by maintaining copies elsewhere. A separately retained backup serves a different purpose: it can provide a restore point after deletion, corruption, or another incident that has also affected replicated data.

Google’s disaster-recovery guidance recommends external backups as part of outage protection. Aurora documents snapshots and point-in-time restore, but its automated backups for point-in-time recovery are not retained after database deletion unless a final snapshot is separately created. Backup retention and deletion behavior vary by service, so verify the rules for the exact product and plan. Google’s disaster recovery guidance and the Aurora FAQ describe these provider-specific details.

Two objectives make a recovery plan concrete:
- RTO (recovery time objective): the target time to restore service.
- RPO (recovery point objective): how much recent data the recovery plan can require you to recover or recreate.
Set targets for each workload, then check whether the selected service and configuration can meet them. Google’s architecture guidance recommends considering outages of different durations and dependencies at multiple layers. As it puts it, “A well-designed system can answer the question: ‘What happens when a zone or region has a 1, 5, 10, or 30 minute outage?’” The guidance also notes that resources in an affected region may be offline while some global or multi-region services continue serving from elsewhere.

What to check before an outage
- Identify the exact service and location type. Find out whether the data is zonal, regional, dual-region, or multi-region.
- Verify replication behavior. Check which failure areas are covered and whether replication is synchronous or asynchronous.
- Read the service-specific recovery terms. Confirm outage behavior, service-level commitments, RTO, and RPO rather than inferring them from a provider-wide statement.
- Review backups and retention. Check how long backups are kept, what happens after deletion, and whether a separate account, project, region, or offline copy is appropriate for the risk.
- Test a restore and failover. Document who can initiate recovery, how applications reconnect, and how the service returns to normal.
- Check dependencies. Encryption keys, identity, DNS, networking, and management-plane operations may also affect recovery.
An offline hard drive can be one destination for a separately maintained backup, but it does not configure, automate, or verify the backup process. Choose a backup workflow and retention policy that suit the data and test that files can actually be restored.
How to compare recovery options
When evaluating configurations for a particular workload, compare the actual service options across these dimensions:
Quick Recap
- Which failure scope is covered: a zone, a region, or both?
- Where are copies stored, and how quickly are they replicated?
- What RPO and RTO are supported by the configuration?
- Is failover automatic or manual?
- How long are backups retained, and what happens to them after resource deletion?
- How much restore testing and operational work will recovery require?
- What additional costs apply?
