You can usually change how the screens are arranged, and some emulator cores also let you increase render scale. Neither setting guarantees that every touch interaction or game will work identically: compatibility depends on the title, emulator build, frontend, platform, and any required system data.
How touch controls work
When a game asks you to tap its lower screen, the emulator needs two things: a pointer position and a press or touch event. Depending on the device and emulator frontend, that input may come from a touchscreen, mouse, or virtual cursor controlled by a gamepad.

Touchscreen or mouse input
Libretro’s Citra core documents touchscreen simulation using a mouse or touchscreen. Its mouse mapping uses the cursor as the touchscreen pointer and mouse button 1 as the touch action; a pointer device can provide position and pressed-state inputs. Libretro’s Citra documentation describes these core-specific options, not a universal control scheme shared by every emulator app.

The melonDS DS core documents virtual cursor movement and virtual cursor touch as controller inputs. The exact controls and their availability can differ by frontend and platform. If taps do not register, check that the emulator has both a pointer movement input and a touch or press action mapped; moving a cursor alone may not activate the touchscreen.

On a compatible touchscreen device, tapping the displayed touch-screen area may be the simplest option. A mouse or mapped stick-and-button combination can serve as an alternative on a computer. A capacitive stylus may help with precise taps, but it is optional and depends on the host device.
How to show both screens and change their placement
Layout controls change the placement and relative visibility of the display panels in the emulator window. They do not change the game’s original pixel output. Libretro’s Citra core documents these layouts:

- Top-bottom: stacks the two screens, keeping both visible in a familiar arrangement.
- Side-by-side: places the screens next to each other, which may suit a wide display.
- Large-screen/small-screen: emphasizes one screen while retaining the other at a smaller size.
- Single-screen: shows one screen at a time, useful when the second screen is not needed continuously.
The best arrangement depends on the game and how you use the host device. If a game needs frequent taps, consider whether the touch-sensitive screen is easy to reach in the chosen layout. The Libretro Citra settings are specific to that core; standalone apps or other emulator builds may use different labels or offer different choices.

Some games were designed for an unusual orientation. The melonDS DS documentation describes layouts that include sideways rotation and a control for cycling through configured layouts. Its project README gives Brain Age as an example of a game intended to be played sideways. Rotate the presentation when the game calls for it; this changes the display arrangement, not the game’s compatibility or render scale.

What “resolution” means in an emulator
Resolution can refer to three separate things: the console’s original pixel output, the emulator’s render-scale multiplier, or the size and placement of the screens in the host window. Changing one does not necessarily change the others.
Render scale
Libretro’s Citra core labels its setting “Resolution scale factor” and lists options from “1x (Native)” through “10x.” A higher scale can render the image at a larger size for a higher-resolution display, but it cannot add detail to the game’s authored assets or ensure that every game scales cleanly. Higher scaling can also demand more from the host hardware; the documentation does not establish a performance improvement or benchmark for any particular device.

Render scale is not a compatibility fix. If a game has broken graphics or does not run, increasing the multiplier does not address missing emulator features, unsupported inputs, or required system files.

Making one screen larger through a layout option changes how the panels appear in the emulator window; it is not the same as raising the render scale. Nintendo’s guidance for DS and DSi games running on Nintendo 3DS family hardware describes a separate real-hardware behavior: those games display at a lower resolution than 3DS games, and holding START or SELECT while loading displays them at original resolution. That shortcut applies to Nintendo hardware, not to an emulator’s render-scale setting. See Nintendo Support’s explanation.

Why game compatibility varies
Compatibility is a title-and-setup question, not a guarantee that every game feature works correctly. A useful check considers several layers:
- Console and game features: Does the emulator support the system and the features this title uses?
- Build and title: Does this particular game run in the emulator version you are using? Check the compatibility documentation for that emulator.
- Frontend and platform: Does your frontend expose the needed input, renderer, and other core features? The melonDS DS documentation notes that available features vary across platform and frontend combinations.
- System data: Does the game require system files that you have not provided? The archived Citra compatibility material notes that some titles require system files dumped from a 3DS.
The Citra compatibility list is archived, with its archive disclaimer dated March 4, 2024. Treat it as historical, title-specific guidance rather than a live guarantee about current development or flawless play. Its archived page also directs users to troubleshooting information when a game listed as compatible still has problems. melonDS DS describes support for games supported by melonDS subject to missing features; its documentation likewise does not promise that every title or feature works on every platform.
What to check when touch input fails
- Confirm that the correct screen area is receiving input, especially if the layout has been rotated or rearranged.
- Check that pointer movement and the touch or press action are both mapped. In the documented Libretro Citra mouse mapping, mouse button 1 supplies the touch action.
- Check the settings for the specific emulator core and frontend you are running; names and available controls are not universal.
- If the game still fails, check the emulator’s title-specific compatibility notes and whether the title requires system files.
These checks distinguish an input-mapping problem from a layout or game-compatibility problem; changing render scale alone will not repair a missing touch mapping.
