ChatGPT privacy has three separate levers: whether new conversations may improve models, whether ChatGPT can remember information for personalization, and how long chats or files are retained. Turning off one does not automatically change the others.
For a personal account, use Settings, Data controls, and the current Privacy Center to review these choices. Managed workspaces can impose different defaults and may restrict what individual users can change.

Start with the three different privacy decisions
People often call every privacy choice “turning off training,” but ChatGPT treats three activities separately:
| Control | What it governs | What it does not do |
|---|---|---|
| Improve the model for everyone | Whether eligible new conversations from a personal account may be used to improve OpenAI models. | It does not delete saved chats, remove files, or erase memories. |
| Memory and personalization | Whether ChatGPT can use saved details, custom instructions, or other personalization to tailor responses. | Turning memory off does not remove previous chats or necessarily delete an existing saved memory. |
| Retention and deletion | Whether a chat, file, or account record remains available and when deletion is scheduled. | Archiving is not deletion, and a deletion request is not an instant erasure from every system. |
These settings can vary by account type, plan, workspace policy, and product version. Labels and navigation can change, so confirm the current options shown in your own Settings and Privacy Center. A control shown in a personal account may be absent or locked in a company, school, or healthcare workspace.

- Brute-Force Password Attack Protection - Data is automatically erased after 6 failed access attempts. The data and encryption key are securely destroyed and the crypto drive is reset
- Rugged Double-Layer Waterproof* Design - Protects the crypto drive against knocks, drops, break-in and submerging in water. The electronics are shielded by a hardended inner case. The rubberised silicone outer casing provides a final layer of protection
- Auto-lock - The crypto drive will automatically encrypt all data and lock when removed from a PC/Mac or when the screen saver or "computer lock" function is activated on the host PC/Mac
- Secure Entry - Data cannot be accessed without the correct high-strength alphanumeric 8-16 character password. A password hint option is available. The password hint cannot match the password
A useful way to think about the three levers is: model improvement concerns OpenAI’s future model development, personalization concerns the responses you receive, and retention concerns copies that remain available or subject to deletion. You may need to change all three when handling sensitive information.
How to stop new personal chats from improving models
Desktop or web instructions
- Open the account menu in ChatGPT.
- Select Settings.
- Open Data controls.
- Find Improve the model for everyone and switch it off.
Mobile instructions
- Open the sidebar.
- Tap your profile.
- Choose Settings, then Data controls.
- Turn off Improve the model for everyone.
For a signed-in account, the choice applies across devices. If you use ChatGPT while signed out, the choice is saved in that browser rather than applied as an account-wide preference. Consequently, a setting changed on a signed-out phone does not necessarily follow you to a signed-in desktop session or another browser.
OpenAI’s Help Center states: “When Improve the model for everyone is off, your new conversations won’t be used to train OpenAI models.” The important qualifiers are new conversations and model improvement. Existing chats can remain in your history, and this switch does not remove memories, files, or connected-app data already present in your account.

The switch is therefore a forward-looking preference. If you had conversations before changing it, those conversations are still governed by the choices that applied when they were created and by the current retention rules. Review and delete older chats separately if your goal is to remove them from your account.
Does turning off model training delete my chats?
No. Turning off the improvement setting changes how new conversations are handled; it is not a deletion command. To remove an old conversation, use the chat’s delete control or the account’s data-management tools described below.
Feedback is a separate exception
For individual plans, OpenAI says that submitting a thumbs-up or thumbs-down after opting out can allow the entire conversation associated with that feedback to be used to improve models. Avoid sending feedback on a sensitive conversation if you do not want to trigger that possibility. This exception is why an opt-out should not be described as an absolute guarantee that no conversation can ever be reviewed for model improvement.
What Temporary Chat does—and what it does not do
Temporary Chat is designed for a conversation that should stay out of normal history and avoid memory updates. It is a session choice, not a universal account privacy setting. It can be useful for a one-off question, but it does not override workspace policies or the practices of an external service reached through a GPT action.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesStart a Temporary Chat
- Start a new chat.
- Choose Temporary.
- Before sending the first message, choose Personalized or Unpersonalized.
- Send your message only after confirming the mode you want.
You cannot change the personalization choice after the conversation has started. Neither mode creates or updates memories while the chat remains temporary, and a temporary conversation is not used to improve models.
Personalized versus Unpersonalized
| Mode | May use during the temporary chat | Memory behavior |
|---|---|---|
| Personalized | Existing personalization, such as memory, custom instructions, or plugins, where the product supports them. | Does not create or update memories from the temporary conversation. |
| Unpersonalized | Does not use memory, custom instructions, or plugins. | Does not create or update memories. |
Choose Unpersonalized when you do not want existing memory or custom instructions shaping the response. Choose Personalized when you want the convenience of those existing settings but still want the temporary chat’s content excluded from memory creation and normal history. Neither choice changes the fact that personalization cannot be switched after the first message.
Temporary does not mean zero retention
A temporary chat does not appear in your normal history unless you save it. OpenAI may nevertheless keep a copy for safety for up to 30 days. That is an operational safety-retention period, not a promise that the chat is instantly destroyed when you close the window.

If you save a temporary conversation, it becomes an ordinary chat and then follows the applicable account or workspace settings. Treat the saved copy as a regular chat when deciding whether to archive, export, or delete it. Saving is a deliberate change in status, so do not use the save command if your objective is to keep the conversation out of history.
Third-party actions have their own policies
If a GPT action sends information to an external service, that recipient’s privacy policy controls what happens after transmission. Temporary Chat does not override a third party’s retention or use of information. Check the destination’s policy before sending personal, confidential, or regulated data. A temporary setting in ChatGPT cannot retract information that has already been sent to another company.
Memory is personalization, not model improvement
Memory lets ChatGPT retain selected information for future personalization. The model-improvement setting answers a different question: whether eligible content may be used to improve models. Changing one does not perform the other action. For example, turning off model improvement does not clear a saved preference, and turning off memory does not remove the chat in which you disclosed that preference.
Turning memory off
Use the Memory controls in current ChatGPT settings or the Privacy Center to stop future personalization from memory. This does not remove previous chats, and it does not necessarily remove saved memories that already exist. Check the memory-management screen after changing the switch so you know whether existing entries remain listed.
Remove something ChatGPT remembered
- Open the memory-management area in Settings or the Privacy Center.
- Delete the specific saved memory, or clear saved memories if that is the option you need.
- Delete the chat where you originally provided the information.
- Check other locations that may contain the same information, including Library files, Projects, custom GPT resources, or conversations that used a connected app.
Memory summaries can omit details, so do not assume the visible summary is a complete record of everything that may have influenced personalization. If removal matters, search for and remove the original source as well as the memory entry. If the same detail appears in multiple chats or files, each copy may require a separate action.

Disconnecting a connected app is also different from removing memory. Disconnecting prevents future access through that connection, but it does not erase past conversations that already used the app’s content. Handle the connection and the historical records as two separate tasks.
Delete, archive, or keep a chat
| Action | Immediate effect | Longer-term effect |
|---|---|---|
| Keep | The chat remains available in your account history. | It remains subject to your account or workspace retention rules. |
| Archive | The chat is hidden from the main list and organized separately. | It is retained; archiving does not change deletion or model-improvement rules. |
| Delete | The saved chat disappears from your account view immediately. | It is scheduled for permanent deletion within 30 days, subject to stated exceptions. |
What the 30-day deletion window means
OpenAI’s published target is permanent deletion within 30 days after you delete a saved chat. Exceptions can apply when data has already been de-identified and disassociated, or when longer retention is required for security or legal obligations. A deleted chat cannot be restored.
“Within 30 days” is a stated operational target, not a countdown that you can monitor in the interface. The chat disappearing from your list is the immediate account-view effect; backend deletion and the listed exceptions are separate parts of the process.
Regular and archived chats remain in the account until you delete them or an applicable workspace-retention policy removes them. If you need a record, export it before deletion; an export is a copy, not a deletion request. Downloaded copies then need their own protection and disposal, because deleting the online chat does not delete a copy you stored elsewhere.
Archive versus delete
Archive when you want a less crowded chat list but may need the conversation later. Archive does not shorten retention or remove the conversation from your account. Delete when you want the saved chat removed from the account view and scheduled for system deletion. Because deletion cannot be undone, export anything you need first.

- Protection against brute force password attacks - Data is automatically erased after 6 unsuccessful access attempts. The data of the USB flash drive type c encryption with dual connectors is destroyed and the cryptographic drive is reset.
- Durable dual-layer waterproof design* — Protects the crypto reader from bumps, drops, run-in and immersion in water. The electronics are protected by a hardened internal case. Rubberized silicone outer case provides a final layer of protection.
- Auto-Lock —The cryptographic key automatically encrypts all data and locks when removed from a PC/Mac or when screen protection or "computer lock" is enabled.
- Secure Entry —Data on these flash drives cannot be accessed without the correct alphanumeric password of 8 to 16 characters. A password indication option is available for this flash drive. The hint cannot match the password.
Files, Projects, custom GPTs, and connected apps need separate checks
Library files
A file in your Library can remain after you delete the chat that used it. Open the Library and delete the file separately if you no longer want it retained. Deleting the conversation alone is not enough to remove an independently stored file. Before deleting, identify whether the file is also referenced by a Project or custom GPT.
Projects and custom GPT resources
Files and instructions attached to Projects or custom GPTs can have their own retention conditions. Review the resource’s management screen and, in a managed workspace, ask the administrator which workspace policy applies. Do not assume deleting one conversation removes shared project or GPT resources. A resource used by several chats may continue to exist until its own owner or administrator removes it.
Connected apps
Disconnecting an app prevents future access through that connection, but it does not erase past conversations that already used the app’s content. Remove the historical chats or files separately, and review the connected service’s own deletion controls when appropriate. If a GPT action transmitted information to a third party, that third party may retain or use it under its own policy even after you disconnect the app.

Eligible signed-in users on Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans can request a data copy through ChatGPT settings or the OpenAI Privacy Portal. An export is useful before deleting an account or chats, but receiving the copy does not alter retention or training settings.
- Open the account menu and go to Settings.
- Open the data or privacy controls and choose the export option, or use the Privacy Portal.
- Complete the identity or email verification steps shown on screen.
- Download the provided archive and store it securely; it may contain sensitive conversation and account information.
The exact labels and delivery steps can change, so follow the current instructions displayed in Settings or the Privacy Portal. An export is a portability measure: it gives you a copy for review or safekeeping, but it does not archive, delete, or opt a conversation out of model improvement.
Self-service export is not available for Business, Enterprise, or Healthcare workspaces. Eligible Edu workspaces may offer it when an administrator enables the feature. If your consumer account is managed by an organization, contact that organization for export instructions rather than assuming the personal-account workflow will work.
Keep the downloaded archive as carefully as any other sensitive record. If you later delete online chats, the downloaded archive remains wherever you saved it until you remove that copy yourself.
Personal accounts and managed workspaces behave differently
OpenAI says content from ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu, and Healthcare workspaces, as well as the API Platform, is not used to improve models by default. “By default” matters: organization settings, contractual agreements, retention policies, and administrator controls determine the actual environment.
| Situation | What you can generally expect | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Personal account | Individual controls for model improvement, Temporary Chat, memory, deletion, and—when eligible—export. | Current Settings labels, plan eligibility, and whether feedback was submitted. |
| Business, Enterprise, or Healthcare workspace | Model improvement is off by default according to OpenAI’s workspace policy description; administrators and agreements govern access. | Workspace retention, administrator settings, legal holds, and whether user deletion/export is restricted. |
| Edu workspace | Organization controls apply; export may be available only if an administrator enables it. | School or institution policy and the administrator’s instructions. |
| API Platform | Content is not used to improve models by default under OpenAI’s stated policy. | Your organization’s agreement, logging configuration, and retention settings. |
Managed users may not have consumer self-service deletion or export. A workspace administrator can also set retention rules that differ from personal-account behavior. Ask the administrator which policy applies before assuming that deleting a chat, leaving a workspace, or closing a personal profile will remove organizational records.
If you use both a personal account and a work or school workspace, check which workspace is active before entering sensitive information. The same ChatGPT interface can expose different controls depending on the selected workspace, and an administrator may be able to apply organization-wide settings you cannot change individually.

Use the Privacy Center as a control checklist
The Privacy Center is a directory for finding privacy and security controls. Opening it does not itself change settings, delete data, or override an organization’s policy. Use it to locate:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Memory and personalization controls.
- Temporary Chat information.
- Connected-app management.
- Multi-factor authentication (MFA) settings.
- Model-improvement preferences.
- Data export and account-deletion requests.
Seeing a link in the Privacy Center is not confirmation that your plan or workspace permits that action. Follow the option into Settings, check whether it is enabled, and contact an administrator when a managed account presents a different route.
A practical review sequence is:
- Decide whether new personal conversations may contribute to model improvement and set Improve the model for everyone accordingly.
- Use Temporary Chat for a one-off conversation that should stay out of normal history, choosing Unpersonalized when you do not want memory, custom instructions, or plugins used.
- Review saved memories and remove both the memory entry and the source chat when you need information forgotten.
- Check Library, Projects, custom GPT resources, and connected apps for duplicate copies.
- Archive only when organization is your goal; delete when you want the account record scheduled for removal.
- Export eligible personal-account data before making irreversible deletions.
- For a managed workspace, confirm the administrator’s retention and export rules.
Repeat this checklist after major product or workspace changes. Navigation and feature availability can change, so rely on the controls currently visible in your account rather than an older screenshot or remembered menu path.
Common privacy questions
What happens to my chats if I turn off training?
New conversations are excluded from model improvement according to the setting’s stated effect, but saved chats remain in history until you archive or delete them. The setting also does not remove memories, Library files, or information already shared with a connected service.
How do I stop my chats from training ChatGPT?
On a signed-in personal account, go to the account menu, Settings, Data controls, and turn off Improve the model for everyone. Remember that a thumbs-up or thumbs-down on an individual-plan conversation can create the feedback exception described above.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWhat about Temporary Chats?
They stay out of normal history, do not create or update memories, and are not used to improve models while temporary. OpenAI may retain a copy for safety for up to 30 days. Saving one converts it to a regular chat, and third-party actions remain subject to the recipient’s policy.
Can I undo a deletion?
No. A deleted saved chat cannot be restored. It disappears from the account view immediately and is scheduled for permanent deletion within 30 days, subject to de-identification, security, or legal-retention exceptions.
Does deleting a chat delete its file?
Not necessarily. A Library file can remain after its chat is deleted, so remove the file from Library separately. Project and custom GPT resources may also require their own deletion action.
Does turning memory off erase what ChatGPT already knows?
No. Turning memory off changes future personalization behavior but does not itself remove saved memories or the chats and files that contain the information. Delete the memory entry and the source records separately.
Does archiving protect a chat from retention?
No. Archiving only hides or organizes the chat. The conversation remains retained under the applicable account or workspace rules until it is deleted or a retention policy removes it.

Is Temporary Chat completely erased as soon as I close it?
No. It stays out of normal history and is not used to improve models while temporary, but OpenAI may keep a copy for safety for up to 30 days. Saving the chat changes it to an ordinary conversation.
Can I export data from a work account?
Self-service export is not available for Business, Enterprise, or Healthcare workspaces. Edu may provide export when an administrator enables it. Ask your organization for the applicable process and retention policy.
What if I used a connected app?

Can managed workspace users export their data?
Business, Enterprise, and Healthcare workspaces do not offer consumer self-service export. Edu export may be enabled by an administrator; ask your organization for instructions.
The Bottom Line
Set Improve the model for everyone to off if you do not want new personal chats used for model improvement, but remember that this does not delete history. Use Temporary Chat for conversations that should stay out of normal history, choose Unpersonalized when you do not want existing personalization used, and remove memories plus their source chats when something must be forgotten. Check Library files, Projects, custom GPT resources, and connected apps separately. Archive for organization, delete for scheduled removal, export before irreversible actions, and follow your administrator’s policy in a managed workspace.
