ChatGPT Alternatives for People Who Want Open-Source or Self-Hosted AI

The best ChatGPT alternative depends on which part you want to replace. Ollama and llama.cpp run models on your computer; Open WebUI and LibreChat provide self-hosted chat interfaces; and AnythingLLM centers workspaces around documents and conversations. Desktop applications such as LM Studio and Jan package local-model discovery and execution for people who do not want to assemble a server.

That distinction matters because “open-source,” “self-hosted,” and “local” are not synonyms. A self-hosted interface can still send prompts to a commercial API. Local inference keeps processing on your machine, but it requires a compatible model, runtime and enough hardware. The guide below maps each option to the job it is designed to do, then shows how to choose and deploy one without making unsupported promises about quality, speed or privacy.

Open-source, self-hosted and local mean different things

Before comparing projects, identify where each component runs and who controls it.

Open-source software

“Open source” generally refers to the software’s source code and license, not to the models that software downloads or the services it connects to. An open-source interface may be configured to call a paid cloud model. Conversely, a local model file may have usage terms that differ from the runtime or chat application.

Self-hosted software

Self-hosting means you operate the application on infrastructure you control, such as a desktop, home server, virtual machine or Kubernetes cluster. It can improve control over accounts, logs and configuration, but it does not automatically make prompts private. If the interface is connected to an external provider, prompts and documents still leave your infrastructure for that request.

Local inference

Local inference means the model generates its response on your own computer or server. You need a model runner such as Ollama or llama.cpp, a model those runtimes support, and hardware suitable for the model and workload. A local interface and a local model runner are separate parts of the stack.

Which project fits which job?

Option Primary role Best fit Important decision axes
Ollama Local model runner Running supported models locally with a simple service that interfaces can call Model support, operating system, hardware and deployment method
llama.cpp Local inference runtime Users who need control over model formats, quantization and runtime behavior Model format, quantization, hardware acceleration and preferred interface
Open WebUI Self-hosted chat and AI workspace Knowledge retrieval, tools, integrations, administration and broader team features RAG and knowledge needs, provider integrations, collaboration, extensibility and license terms
LibreChat Self-hosted multi-provider chat People who want several providers and side-by-side model comparison Provider mix, authentication, comparison workflow and license preference
AnythingLLM Document-centered workspace Individual users who organize conversations around files and workspaces Desktop versus server, document retrieval, local versus hosted operation and team requirements
LM Studio Desktop local-model application Graphical model discovery and local execution without building a web server Desktop convenience, supported platform, runtime and proprietary licensing
Jan Desktop local-model application Users seeking a desktop workflow with an Apache 2.0-licensed application Platform support, model runtime and desktop features

This is a role-based comparison, not a universal ranking. The cited project pages are published by the projects or vendors themselves, so feature descriptions should be treated as product claims rather than independent benchmark results. No independent test in the available evidence establishes that any option matches ChatGPT for answer quality, latency, reliability or ease of setup.

Choose by the outcome you want

You want a local chatbot with the least assembly

Start with a desktop application such as LM Studio or Jan. These package model discovery and a conversational interface in one app. You still need to check the application’s supported operating systems, model formats and hardware requirements. Desktop convenience does not remove the need to select a model your computer can load.

You want a browser-based interface for local models

Pair a local runner with a web interface. Open WebUI documents native integration with Ollama and connections to OpenAI-compatible APIs. A typical arrangement is: the runner loads the model, Open WebUI handles conversations and settings, and a browser connects to Open WebUI over your local network or server address.

You want several hosted and local providers in one place

LibreChat is designed as a self-hosted, multi-provider chat application. Open WebUI’s August 2026 comparison describes LibreChat as a focused interface with side-by-side model comparison and recommends it for users who prioritize that workflow. Provider credentials and data-routing policies remain your responsibility; adding a provider does not make that provider local.

You work mainly with a document collection

AnythingLLM emphasizes workspaces for documents and conversations. Its October 2026 comparison describes desktop, self-hosted server, Android and hosted paths. This makes it a natural candidate when the first question is “How do I ask questions of this set of files?” rather than “Which model should I compare?” Retrieval quality still depends on document parsing, chunking, embeddings and the selected model.

You are building a shared team service

Compare Open WebUI and LibreChat by scope. Open WebUI presents a broader platform covering knowledge features, tools, integrations, collaboration and administration. LibreChat focuses more narrowly on multi-provider chat and model comparison, with authentication options such as LDAP and SSO described in Open WebUI’s August 2026 comparison. Confirm current implementation details in the projects’ own documentation before committing to an organization-wide rollout.

How the pieces fit together

A ChatGPT-like system commonly has four layers:

  1. Model: the weights that generate text. Models have their own licenses, supported context lengths and hardware demands.
  2. Inference runtime: software that loads the model and performs generation. Ollama and llama.cpp are local-runtime choices.
  3. Interface: the application where you chat, upload files, manage prompts and select providers. Open WebUI, LibreChat and AnythingLLM occupy this layer.
  4. Optional services: embeddings, vector databases, authentication, file storage, monitoring or external model APIs.

These layers can be mixed. For example, Open WebUI can connect to Ollama for local inference or to an OpenAI-compatible API for a remote provider. AnythingLLM can be used as a desktop application or deployed as a server. Keeping the layers separate helps you replace one part without rebuilding everything.

Open WebUI: broad self-hosted workspace

Open WebUI’s alternatives documentation describes deployment through Docker, Kubernetes, pip or a desktop application. It can connect to native Ollama and to OpenAI-compatible APIs, so it can sit in front of local and remote models.

Where it is strongest

  • Knowledge and retrieval features for organizing information beyond a single chat.
  • Tools and integrations for extending what a conversation can do.
  • Administration and collaboration features aimed at a shared installation.
  • A single browser interface that can expose local runtimes and external providers.

What to verify before deployment

  • Which provider receives each prompt, file or tool request.
  • How user accounts, conversation history and uploaded files are stored.
  • Whether the current release supports the authentication and integration you need.
  • License and branding obligations. Open WebUI’s documentation says its latest components use the Open WebUI License with a branding-preservation requirement, while earlier contributions retain their original license terms.

The branding condition is especially relevant if you redistribute a modified interface or offer it as a service. Read the current license text rather than relying on a summary.

LibreChat: focused multi-provider comparison

Open WebUI’s August 2026 comparison characterizes LibreChat as a self-hosted multi-provider chat application and identifies it as MIT-licensed. It highlights side-by-side model comparison and authentication options including LDAP and SSO.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

When LibreChat is a good match

  • You regularly compare responses from different providers or models.
  • Your priority is a focused chat experience rather than a larger knowledge-and-tools platform.
  • You need to connect multiple providers while keeping the interface under your control.
  • An MIT license aligns with your redistribution or internal deployment policy.

Questions to answer first

  • Which providers have compatible APIs and what information each provider retains.
  • Whether your desired identity provider and group controls are supported in the release you will run.
  • How side-by-side comparisons affect token usage and API costs when several models answer the same prompt.
  • Whether you need document workspaces or retrieval features beyond the focused chat workflow.

AnythingLLM: document-first workspaces

AnythingLLM’s October 2026 comparison describes a document-oriented workspace model and offers desktop, self-hosted server, mobile and hosted paths. Its core is described as MIT-licensed. The same page says its hosted plan started at $50 per month when updated; that is a dated vendor price, not a guaranteed current rate, so recheck pricing before budgeting.

Why workspaces matter

A workspace can keep a project’s files, conversations and retrieval settings together. That is useful for a research folder, internal procedures or a codebase where you want multiple conversations grounded in the same material. It does not guarantee correct answers: the system can retrieve the wrong passage, fail to parse a file or inherit errors from the source documents.

Deployment choices

  • Desktop: a simpler path for an individual who wants a local application.
  • Self-hosted server: suitable when several users need a shared instance and you can maintain storage, updates and access controls.
  • Mobile: useful for access away from a workstation, subject to the application’s current capabilities and data-routing settings.
  • Hosted: avoids server maintenance but introduces a managed service and its own privacy, availability and price considerations.

Ollama versus llama.cpp

Ollama and llama.cpp are not replacements for a chat interface such as Open WebUI or LibreChat. They are local inference options.

Ollama

Ollama is presented in Open WebUI’s alternatives documentation as a local model runner with native Open WebUI integration. It is a practical choice when you want a runner that an interface can call without designing your own API layer. Confirm the exact model list, import process and operating-system support for the version you plan to use.

llama.cpp

llama.cpp is described as a local inference option that can connect to Open WebUI through an API. It is attractive when model format, quantization and runtime control are important. That flexibility means you may need to understand more about compatible files, conversion, context size and hardware acceleration than with a packaged desktop workflow.

How to choose between them

  • Choose the runner that supports the model format and quantization you intend to use.
  • Check how each runtime exposes an API to your chosen interface.
  • Compare setup and update procedures for your operating system.
  • Measure the workload you actually care about instead of assuming one runtime is universally faster.

Desktop applications: LM Studio and Jan

Open WebUI’s alternatives guide lists LM Studio and Jan as desktop applications for discovering or running local models. It lists Jan as Apache 2.0 and LM Studio as proprietary/free. Those labels describe the application licensing, not necessarily the licenses of every model you can download through them.

Desktop advantages

  • One application can handle model discovery, loading and chat.
  • You can experiment before exposing a server to a network.
  • Settings and logs are easier to inspect than a multi-container deployment for many individuals.

Desktop limitations

  • A desktop process is not automatically available to other users or devices.
  • Background operation, remote access and authentication may require additional configuration.
  • Model downloads consume storage and may be large; check the model’s own requirements.

How to set up a local or self-hosted system

Path A: desktop-first local chat

  1. Choose a desktop application and verify its operating-system support.
  2. Select a model whose license permits your intended use and whose documented requirements fit your computer.
  3. Download the model through the application or import a compatible file.
  4. Start with a short prompt and inspect response time, memory use and stability.
  5. Test a representative task, such as summarizing a document or generating code, before moving important work to the system.
  6. Keep the application and model files updated according to their project instructions, and remove unused models to reclaim storage.

Path B: local runner plus Open WebUI

  1. Install a supported local runner, such as Ollama or llama.cpp, on the machine that will perform inference.
  2. Download or import a model compatible with that runner and verify that the runner can generate a response by itself.
  3. Deploy Open WebUI using the installation method appropriate to your environment: Docker, Kubernetes, pip or its desktop distribution.
  4. In Open WebUI, configure the runner’s native connection or an OpenAI-compatible endpoint.
  5. Select the local model in a new conversation and verify that requests do not silently fall back to an external provider.
  6. If other devices will connect, place the interface behind authentication and restrict network exposure to the addresses you need.

Path C: self-hosted multi-provider chat

  1. Choose LibreChat or another interface based on the providers, authentication and comparison workflow you require.
  2. Create a separate API credential for the deployment and set usage limits with each provider.
  3. Install the application on a server you can patch, back up and monitor.
  4. Configure TLS, user authentication and session expiration before inviting other users.
  5. Document which provider handles each model selection and what data that provider receives.
  6. Test account creation, revocation, backups and provider failure before treating the system as production-ready.

Path D: document-centered AnythingLLM workspace

  1. Choose desktop, server, mobile or hosted deployment according to the number of users and your maintenance capacity.
  2. Create a workspace for one project or document collection rather than mixing unrelated material.
  3. Import a small, representative set of files and check how headings, tables, scans and code are parsed.
  4. Configure the model and any embedding or retrieval service, noting whether each runs locally or through an external API.
  5. Ask questions whose answers are explicitly present in the documents, then inspect citations or retrieved passages when available.
  6. Set access rules and retention practices before uploading confidential material.

Privacy: trace every data path

Self-hosting an interface does not prove that all data stays on your server. A request can travel through several services: the browser, the interface, a retrieval or embedding service, a model runtime, an external model API and a logging or monitoring system.

For each deployment, write down:

  • Where prompts and responses are stored.
  • Where uploaded files and extracted text are stored.
  • Whether embeddings are generated locally or by a remote service.
  • Which provider receives requests when a user changes the model selector.
  • Who can read server logs, backups and administrator dashboards.
  • How data is deleted and how long backups remain.

Use test data first. A local interface connected to a commercial provider can be convenient, but it should be described as a hybrid setup rather than fully local.

Hardware and model selection

The available evidence supports the general need for a suitable computer when running models locally, but it does not establish a universal minimum for RAM, GPU memory, storage or model size. Avoid buying hardware based only on a “local AI” label.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before purchasing or repurposing a machine, identify:

  • The exact model and quantization you plan to run.
  • Required system memory and, if applicable, graphics memory.
  • Expected context length and whether your workload uses long documents.
  • Operating-system support for the runtime and interface.
  • Storage for model files, indexes, logs and backups.
  • Whether you need one interactive user or several concurrent users.

Start with the smallest representative workload, observe memory pressure and response behavior, then scale hardware to the model and concurrency you actually need. No particular GPU, workstation or named machine is substantiated by the available evidence.

Licensing and redistribution checks

License decisions involve at least three separate objects: the interface, the runtime and the model.

Connected provider Terms for API use, retention, training, regional processing, rate limits and billing.

Open WebUI’s documentation identifies a branding-preservation requirement for its latest components and says older contributions retain their original licenses. Open WebUI’s August 2026 comparison lists LibreChat as MIT-licensed. AnythingLLM’s October 2026 comparison describes its core as MIT-licensed. Verify the current license files and notices before redistributing, rebranding or offering any of these as a paid service.

Common failure modes and fixes

The interface cannot reach the model

Confirm that the runner is running, the endpoint address is reachable from the interface container or host, and the selected model name exactly matches the installed model. Containerized deployments often need a service hostname rather than localhost.

Responses are slow or stop unexpectedly

Check memory use, context length and concurrent requests. Try a smaller or more heavily quantized model, shorten the prompt and reduce simultaneous users. Do not interpret one slow session as a benchmark of the entire runtime.

Documents produce confident but wrong answers

Inspect whether the file was parsed correctly, whether the relevant passage was retrieved and whether the prompt requires the system to distinguish missing evidence from an answer. Test with questions whose answers you can verify directly in the source.

Users think a self-hosted setup is private, but prompts leave the server

Review every configured provider and embedding endpoint. Remove external connections for a truly local workflow, or label the deployment clearly as hybrid and apply the provider’s data policy to the affected information.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An upgrade changes behavior

Record application, runtime and model versions; back up configuration and workspaces; test upgrades with a non-production copy; and retain a rollback path. Features, licenses, pricing and integrations can change after the dates cited here.

Costs to plan for

Software may be free or open source while the complete system still incurs costs. Budget for electricity and hardware for local inference, storage and backups for self-hosting, server administration and security maintenance, and API charges when using remote providers. A hosted document workspace can trade infrastructure work for a recurring fee. AnythingLLM’s page reported a hosted plan starting at $50 per month in October 2026, but that vendor-published figure is time-sensitive and should be checked before purchase.

A practical decision framework

  1. Decide where inference must happen. If it must remain on your machine, limit the shortlist to local runtimes and interfaces configured for them.
  2. Decide whether you need a desktop or shared browser service. Desktop apps suit individual experimentation; a self-hosted server suits multiple users and devices.
  3. Decide whether documents are central. Choose a document-first workspace when file organization and retrieval are the primary task.
  4. Decide whether provider comparison matters. A focused multi-provider interface is useful when you regularly compare models or vendors.
  5. Decide what administration is required. For teams, evaluate authentication, roles, auditability, backups and update procedures before model features.
  6. Read all applicable licenses. Check interface branding terms, runtime conditions, model permissions and provider contracts together.
  7. Pilot with realistic data. Test representative documents, prompts, users and failure cases before committing.

Keeping expectations realistic

These projects give you more control over deployment, providers and data paths, but control adds decisions. You must select models, maintain software, secure endpoints, monitor storage and understand which services process each request. The cited materials do not provide independent measurements showing parity with ChatGPT’s quality, speed, uptime or privacy. Evaluate those properties with your own workload and risk requirements.

For most readers, the cleanest starting point is to choose the role first: a desktop app for an individual local chatbot, Ollama or llama.cpp when you need a separate local runtime, Open WebUI for a broader self-hosted workspace, LibreChat for focused multi-provider comparison, or AnythingLLM when documents and project workspaces come first.
