What Happens to Satellite Internet During GPS or Network Interference?

GPS interference and satellite broadband interference affect different signal paths. Whether GPS loss disrupts internet depends on the terminal, network design, and backup systems.

GPS interference does not automatically shut off satellite internet. GPS provides positioning and timing signals; satellite broadband uses a separate communications link. A GPS outage can affect some terminals or network functions, but whether it interrupts your connection depends on the system’s design, its reliance on GPS, and its backups. Interference with the broadband link itself is a different problem.

GPS interference and satellite internet interference are not the same

GPS is one part of the broader Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS). Its signals help receivers determine position and time. Satellite internet carries data between a terminal, a communications satellite and the provider’s network. Because these are distinct services and signal paths, losing GPS reception does not by itself show that the broadband connection is being jammed.

GPS signals are weak by the time they reach the ground and can be overwhelmed. GPS.gov lists nearby-band emissions, intentional or unintentional jamming, and space weather among possible sources of GPS disruption. [GPS.gov: Spectrum and Interference]

Jamming versus spoofing

Jamming overwhelms or blocks genuine GNSS reception. Spoofing broadcasts counterfeit GNSS-like signals that may mislead a receiver about its position or time. The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) distinguishes these kinds of interference; neither term, by itself, means that a satellite-internet downlink or terminal is being disrupted. GPS.gov says consumers cannot legally use signal jammers in the United States. Do not use or attempt to obtain one as a troubleshooting tool. [GPS.gov: Spectrum and Interference]

What GPS loss can do to a satellite-internet connection

Some satellite systems use GPS for functions such as timing synchronization, satellite tracking, terminal location, or acquiring a satellite. Other designs may have alternate timing references, or terminals that do not require GPS to operate. A CISA-hosted NSTAC report describes these differences, including systems where GPS loss may lengthen acquisition or temporarily interrupt service. Those examples do not establish how a current consumer terminal or a specific provider will behave. [CISA: NSTAC Report on GPS Disruption]

Winegard Dish Playmaker Dual PL-8000 Satellite TV Antenna
  • AUTOMATIC SATELLITE ACQUISITION: Self-pointing portable antenna locates DISH satellites in minutes without manual pointing. Designed for RV and mobile use, the antenna locks onto signal quickly and maintains stable HD reception.
  • WATCH TWO CHANNELS SIMULTANEOUSLY: Independent viewing capability allows two compatible DISH receivers to operate simultaneously. This makes it easy to watch different channels on separate TVs.
  • RUGGED OUTDOOR CONSTRUCTION: Engineered for field-ready durability with a weather-resistant housing to withstand road travel and extended outdoor exposure. Compact dome design measures approximately 14.3” in diameter and 13.5” in height.
  • BROAD DISH COMPATIBILITY: Works with DISH Wally and select ViP receivers for seamless integration into existing satellite setups. Compatible with pay-as-you-go programming, which is great for RVs, tailgating, and camping.
  • TRUSTED U.S.-BASED DESIGN: Built on decades of Winegard technology expertise, delivering dependable performance, and U.S.-based servers for privacy and security, eliminating foreign monitoring concerns.

Depending on the system and its backups, a customer might see no immediate effect, slower satellite acquisition, a problem with a GPS-dependent function, or a temporary interruption. There is no universal symptom that proves GPS is the cause, and a general internet outage is not enough to identify jamming.

Other reasons satellite internet can stop working

A satellite connection can fail for reasons unrelated to GPS, including a blocked view of the sky, power loss, faulty equipment, a problem with the satellite communications link, or an outage in the provider’s network or upstream connectivity. CISA cautions that GPS signal loss can also result from obstruction or receiver and equipment issues; one device losing reception alone does not prove malicious interference. Keep the distinction clear: a GPS/GNSS problem concerns navigation or timing signals, while a satellite broadband problem concerns the communications system, terminal, power, or provider network. The symptoms and diagnostics vary by service, so do not attribute an outage to GPS without provider or incident evidence.

How to investigate an apparent outage

  1. Check the terminal’s indicators. Look for the provider-specific status or troubleshooting message for satellite signal, obstruction, power, equipment, or network trouble. Interpret the indicator using the instructions for your service; labels and meanings are not universal.
  2. Check provider status and troubleshooting guidance. Use the provider’s official service-status page or support channel. An internet outage alone does not establish GPS interference.
  3. Compare independent observations if it is safe and practical. Check whether separate GPS receivers and other services in the area are also affected. CISA notes that simultaneous losses across multiple receivers and systems can be a clue, but determining the cause can be complex. [CISA: Critical Infrastructure Dependencies on Positioning, Navigation, and Timing]
  4. Contact the provider or equipment supplier. Follow its documented diagnostic steps, especially before changing settings or restarting equipment. For critical infrastructure, CISA recommends considering alternate timing sources or holdover capability where applicable; that is a resilience measure, not a general home-internet fix. [CISA: Critical Infrastructure Dependencies on Positioning, Navigation, and Timing]
  5. Report suspected interference through the appropriate channel. In the United States, GPS.gov directs users to the U.S. Coast Guard Navigation Center (NAVCEN) for GPS outage or anomaly reports and advises reporting suspected illegal jamming to the FCC. Outside the United States, contact the relevant national regulator or service authority. [GPS.gov: Spectrum and Interference] [NAVCEN: GPS Problem Report]

What is known about specific providers

The available evidence supports a general explanation of how GPS can factor into satellite systems, but it does not establish current, model-specific behavior for Starlink, OneWeb, Hughesnet, Viasat, or another consumer provider. To determine whether a particular terminal needs GPS for timing, location, or acquisition—and what it does during GPS loss—consult that provider’s documentation or a service-specific outage notice.
