You usually cannot prove that something was written or made by AI just by looking at it. Style clues and detector scores are uncertain; provenance can reveal information about a file’s recorded history, but not whether its claims are true or shown in context. To decide what to trust, check the source and verify the central claim independently of authorship.
Separate authorship, authenticity, and truth
These are different questions. Authorship asks who or what created the content. Authenticity and provenance concern whether a file is genuine and what is known about its origin or history. Truth asks whether its claims match the evidence.

- A real, unaltered photo can still be presented with a misleading caption or stripped of its original context.
- AI-generated content can contain accurate information.
- A post written by a person can be false.
So a clue that suggests AI involvement does not settle whether a claim is true, and a valid record of a file’s history does not establish that its message is accurate. NIST explains that transparency about origin and history may contribute to trustworthiness but does not guarantee it, and can sometimes undermine it: NIST AI 100-4, published November 20, 2024.

NIST groups synthetic-content detection into three complementary approaches: provenance checks, content-based automated analysis, and human-assisted review. They answer different questions, and none is a universal test.

- Long Battery Life & Portable Design – Built-in 800mAh rechargeable battery provides up to 25 hours of continuous use. Fully charges in just 1.5 hours via USB. Small enough to carry anywhere – weighs next to nothing, so you can take it on every trip.
Provenance records and credentials
Provenance information, such as a watermark or metadata, can provide an affirmative signal about a file’s history. But watermarks have error probabilities, metadata can be inaccurate, and many files may have no provenance information at all. Missing information is not proof that a file was generated by AI.
For supported content, the Content Credentials verifier can help inspect compatible credentials. A valid credential tells you about the recorded history and signer; it does not certify that every claim in the content is true. Check what the credential actually records rather than treating a verification result as a truth label.

Automated detectors
Content-based detectors look for traces associated with generation or editing. Their results depend on the content type, the systems they were built or tested against, and how the content has changed since creation. NIST describes detection as a continuing contest: generation systems improve, people seeking to evade detection adapt, and a detector may work well only for particular generators.

Human judgment and writing style
Fluent prose, repeated transitions, generic phrasing, or an unusually polished tone may invite scrutiny, but style alone cannot establish authorship. Human accuracy varies with the task and expertise. A NIST 2024 report describing a 2023 study found that experienced chatbot users classified question-and-answer responses correctly 61%–100% of the time, depending on language and domain. A separate 2023 study cited in the report found that human judgments of text were indistinguishable from chance. Neither result is a general accuracy estimate for readers or a reliable test for an individual item. See NIST AI 100-4.
NIST’s GenAI Text 2026 page describes a separate evaluation of how indistinguishable generated narratives are from human writing and how believable their main messages are. The page labels its evaluation plan preliminary and says schedules may change; it is not a consumer detector score or proof that readers can reliably identify AI content. See NIST GenAI Text 2026.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical workflow for checking a post, image, video, or article
- Pause and preserve the item. Before sharing or relying on it, keep the original post or file if possible. Note who published it, when, and where you encountered it. Reposts and screenshots can remove context or history that may help with verification.
- Find the source and surrounding context. Look for the original publisher, a named author or organization, a publication date, and the complete statement or event being described. Follow links to primary evidence where available. For media, ask whether it is being shown in its original context; genuine media can mislead when framed incorrectly or taken out of context.
- Inspect provenance if the format supports it. Use a compatible credential verifier when a file has credentials to inspect. Read what the record says about the file’s history and signer. If no credential appears, record that you found no provenance information—not that the item is AI-generated.
- Check the substance against independent evidence. For text, verify named people, dates, quotations, and central claims against original documents or reputable independent reporting. For images or video, look for the earliest available posting and compare the item with independent coverage or other views of the event. Visual inspection alone is not a conclusive way to identify AI generation.
- Treat detector results as one clue. If a detector flags content, consider the possibility of a false positive and seek corroboration. If it does not flag content, do not treat that as authentication. Detector performance can vary by generator and content.
- Describe what you know precisely. Say “I found no provenance record,” “this detector flagged the text,” or “I could not verify this quotation” when those are the observations. Say “this is AI-generated” only when independent evidence supports that conclusion.
Decide what to trust by verifying the claim
For a claim that matters, prioritize evidence over a verdict about how the content was made. Trace quotations to their original source, compare dates and names with reliable records, and look for independent confirmation. If the original source or supporting evidence cannot be found, treat the claim as unverified rather than filling the gap with a detector score or an impression of the writing style.
