Games you claimed or downloaded through PlayStation Plus do not become permanent purchases. When your membership expires, you lose access to them through that membership—even if their files are still installed. Access can return if you renew, but catalog games must still be included in your tier and available on the service.

What happens to each type of PlayStation Plus game?

The rules depend on how you accessed the game. Monthly games, catalog games and separately purchased games have different entitlements.

Why a downloaded game can stop working

Downloading installs game files; it does not convert a subscription entitlement into a license you own. The console checks whether your account is entitled to play the title. For catalog downloads, Sony’s 23 May 2022 PlayStation Blog announcement said players need to connect to PSN every seven days to validate membership and maintain access when playing offline. That interval describes offline validation—not a seven-day grace period after a subscription expires.

A game leaving the catalog is a separate issue

Catalog access can end even while your membership is active if a title is removed from the service. Sony says a catalog game may have an end date; check the current catalog listing and removal notices for a title you rely on. Renewing your membership will not restore catalog access to a game that has left.

What happens to your DLC and saved data?

DLC and add-ons

Purchased add-ons do not give you access to a catalog game’s base game. Sony says DLC and add-ons associated with that game become inaccessible if your membership expires or the game leaves the service. You can use them again if you resubscribe or purchase the base title.

Game saves

Save location depends on how you played: saves for downloaded games are stored on your PS4 or PS5, while saves for streamed games are stored on PlayStation. Sony also describes cloud storage as a membership feature, but its reviewed support information does not establish a retention period or explain post-expiry cloud-save access. If a save matters, keep a local copy or transfer it before your membership ends rather than relying on an unconfirmed cloud-retention window. See Sony’s save and transfer instructions.
