No. A phone thermal camera measures infrared radiation from surfaces; it does not see through ordinary walls, household glass, or clothing. Heat from something hidden may change a surface’s temperature and create a visible pattern, but that is an indirect clue—not an image of what is behind or beneath it.
What a phone thermal camera actually shows
A thermal camera measures infrared radiation and converts differences in surface temperature into a color image. Those colors represent the camera’s readings; they are not a photograph of a hidden interior. As Teledyne FLIR explains, “If you point a thermal camera at a wall, it will detect heat from the wall, not what’s behind it.” FLIR’s explanation of thermal imaging and common questions describes this basic limit.

The same principle applies when the camera is attached to a phone. The phone displays the thermal image, but the attachment still reads infrared radiation from surfaces it can detect.
Can it see through a wall?
No. An opaque wall blocks a direct view of what is on the other side. A warm pipe, a cold area, a stud, or moisture may affect the wall’s surface temperature enough to create a pattern, but the camera is reading the surface—not seeing the feature itself.

- JOBSITE TOUGH: Built to take the abuse that working on a jobsite dishes out every day, rated to take a drop from 1.5 meters and is built to last
Whether a hidden condition influences the surface depends on factors such as the temperature difference, time, wall thickness, materials, and construction. A pattern can be useful during a surface-temperature inspection, but it is not proof of exactly what is behind the wall. Teledyne FLIR’s support guidance likewise says FLIR ONE cameras are “thermal imaging cameras, not X-ray devices” and that they “allow you to visualize and measure the surface temperature of most objects.” FLIR ONE privacy FAQ
Can it see through ordinary glass?
No. Ordinary window glass blocks the long-wave infrared radiation used by typical thermal imagers. The camera generally detects the glass surface and thermal energy reflected from it, rather than a thermal image of what is beyond the window. Reflections can make the image look as if it contains an object, so do not interpret a thermal view of a window like a view through clear visible-light glass.

Compact and lightweight, it measures 2.32×1.06×0.68 inches (59×27×17.2mm) and weighs only 0.62oz (17g), making it easy to carry in a shirt pocket. The package includes the P1 thermal camera, a zipper case, a 50cm extension cable, and a quick start guide.
Specialized infrared-transmitting windows are different materials made for specific optical uses. They do not make an ordinary household window transparent to a phone thermal camera. FLIR’s guidance on protective infrared windows distinguishes standard glass from specialized infrared window materials.

No. A thermal camera shows the temperature pattern on the clothing’s outer surface, not a see-through image of the person wearing it. Body heat can influence fabric temperature, but any pattern remains indirect surface information; it does not reveal a person’s body or what is beneath the clothing. The thermal-imager FAQ discusses surface temperature and these indirect effects.

Why can a hidden feature sometimes appear in a thermal image?
A feature behind a wall or beneath fabric can transfer heat and alter the temperature at the visible surface. When that temperature difference is large enough for the camera to distinguish, the surface may show a corresponding pattern. The camera still detects the surface, and the pattern alone may not identify its cause.
Thin plastic is sometimes cited as an exception, but that edge case does not generalize to walls, glass, or clothing. FLIR describes a demonstration involving a very thin plastic sheet and notes that thicker plastic blocks infrared. Material and thickness matter; thermal imaging is not a universal see-through method. FLIR’s explainer

What a phone thermal camera is useful for
A phone-compatible thermal camera can help show surface-temperature patterns during legitimate inspection tasks, such as checking for unusual hot or cold areas. It cannot, by itself, confirm the exact object or condition behind a wall or beneath clothing.

Phone-connected thermal cameras are available, but not every phone has a built-in thermal sensor. Before choosing an attachment, check the manufacturer’s current compatibility information for your phone and operating system, along with the connection method and specifications relevant to your inspection task. Product examples and third-party guides do not establish current availability or universal compatibility. FLIR ONE product information and Digital Camera World’s FLIR ONE Edge Pro guide describe phone-compatible camera options; buying one does not enable seeing through walls, windows, or clothing.
