Your subscription benefits generally continue until the paid term ends. After expiry, Microsoft’s consumer free allowance is 5 GB of cloud storage shared by OneDrive and Outlook.com attachments, plus a separate 15 GB for Outlook.com storage. If you are over quota, OneDrive changes and email disruption are possible, so check your usage and save what matters before your subscription expires.
Cancellation and expiry are different
Submitting a cancellation request usually stops the next renewal; it does not end paid benefits immediately. Microsoft says you can keep using the subscription until its displayed expiry date. If your account page shows Turn on recurring billing, Microsoft says the subscription is already set to expire on that date and no further cancellation action is needed.

What changes to OneDrive after the subscription expires?
Microsoft says files remain intact initially when a subscription expires. The immediate issue is storage capacity: the subscription’s added storage benefit ends, and the account returns to its previous allowance. For a consumer personal account, Microsoft lists 5 GB of cloud storage shared across OneDrive and Outlook.com attachments.

If your total use is above that allowance, you may be unable to upload, edit, or sync OneDrive files, and existing files may become read-only. Microsoft describes possible account freezing and later deletion, but its public support pages do not agree on a deletion timetable. Its expiry guidance says a OneDrive account may freeze after three months and may be deleted after six months; a refund page instead says deletion may occur after twelve months. These are possible outcomes, not guaranteed deadlines.
Microsoft’s cancellation guidance states: “After 6 months, we may delete your OneDrive and all files within it.” Because another Microsoft page gives a twelve-month period, do not rely on either figure as a safe retention window. How Outlook.com email is affected
Outlook.com does not automatically close when Microsoft 365 expires. Microsoft lists 15 GB of Outlook.com storage separately from the shared 5 GB cloud allowance. Attachments count toward the shared cloud allowance, so a mailbox can contribute to OneDrive being over quota even when the mailbox itself is below its separate storage limit.

Who else may be affected on a shared plan?
When a Microsoft 365 Family or other supported shared plan expires, invited users lose the extra storage benefit too. Microsoft says the files remain intact initially, but each person’s allowance returns to their prior level. Microsoft’s sharing FAQ says, “If the Microsoft 365 subscription holder lets their subscription expire, your files will remain intact.” Each user should check their own usage and make a copy of important files before the added storage ends. The subscription’s OneDrive benefit is 1 TB per eligible user while active, according to Microsoft’s subscription-sharing guidance.
What to do before your subscription expires
- Check the expiry date and billing provider. Review your Microsoft account’s subscription page. If Apple, Google, or a retailer bills you, use that provider’s cancellation and billing controls.
- Check combined cloud usage. Review Microsoft storage usage, including both OneDrive files and Outlook.com attachments. Separately check Outlook.com storage against its listed 15 GB allowance.
- Choose what to preserve. Download or copy the files you need to keep, or move them to another storage location. A local copy on an external drive is one option; you do not need to buy one if you already have a suitable place to store your files.
- Get below the allowance you plan to use. Delete or move enough OneDrive files and attachments to fit the 5 GB shared cloud allowance, unless you plan to retain or renew a storage subscription.
- Protect email access. If sending and receiving mail is important, reduce Outlook.com use as needed and keep the relevant quotas in mind. If messages were rejected while you were over quota, ask senders to resend them after you free space.
- Tell Family-plan members. Ask each invited user to check their own files and storage use before the shared benefit expires.
Which option makes sense for your files?
| Option | Best fit | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Reduce OneDrive and attachment usage to the free allowance | You can keep your data within Microsoft’s free consumer quota. | OneDrive and Outlook.com attachments share the 5 GB cloud allowance; Outlook.com also has a separate 15 GB storage limit. |
| Keep or renew a Microsoft storage subscription | You want continued online storage, syncing, or sharing through Microsoft. | Check the current plan and billing details in your account; the sources cited here do not establish current prices. |
| Make an independent copy and move files elsewhere | You want to retain files without depending on the expiring Microsoft storage benefit. | Consider how much data you have, whether you need online access and sync, and where the copy will be stored. A local external drive is one possible destination. |
Does Microsoft guarantee a deletion date?
No specific deadline is safe to assume. Microsoft’s current consumer support guidance gives conflicting possible deletion periods—six months on some pages and twelve months on another—and does not explain the difference. Microsoft says it may delete an over-quota OneDrive; treat that as a risk rather than a predictable countdown, and make your own copy before expiry if you need to keep the files.
