When you turn on a Focus, your iPhone applies that Focus’s notification rules: it can silence notifications or let selected people and apps alert you. Other notifications are delayed to reduce interruptions, but exceptions and display settings affect what you hear and see. Focus does not simply delete notifications, and Apple does not promise that every silenced alert will appear at one guaranteed time when Focus ends.
How Focus changes notifications
Apple describes Focus as a way to temporarily silence all notifications or allow only specific ones. For each Focus, you can either allow selected people and apps or silence selected people and apps; the behavior depends on which approach you set up. Apple says Focus delays notification delivery to prevent interruptions, but the exact experience also depends on the alert type and the Focus’s options.

To review the rules, open Settings > Focus, select a Focus, then check People and Apps. Labels can vary slightly by software version. See Apple’s Focus setup guide and its guide to allowing or silencing notifications for a Focus.
Which notifications can still get through?
Some alerts have separate rules or exceptions. These options do not mean every notification will break through: availability depends on the feature, app, contact, device, and settings involved.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Calls and emergency contacts
Focus settings can permit calls from certain groups and repeated calls. Apple defines repeated calls in this setting as two or more calls from the same person within three minutes. Separately, a contact’s Emergency Bypass setting can allow that contact’s ringtone or text tone to sound and vibrate even when notifications are silenced. Review the call options and contact settings if you need a particular person to reach you.
Time Sensitive and Critical Alerts
A Focus can be set to allow apps to send Time Sensitive Notifications immediately. This applies to that notification category, not every alert from those apps. Some supported apps can also use Critical Alerts to get through when other notifications are silenced; support is limited to eligible apps and alert types. Apple explains these distinctions in its Focus notification settings guide and notifications support article.

Driving Focus and Apple Intelligence
Apple’s current notifications guidance says apps cannot be allowed to send notifications during Driving Focus. Because options can change with software, check the current Driving Focus setup screen on your iPhone. On eligible devices and software, Intelligent Breakthrough & Silencing can allow notifications judged important and silence those judged less important; notifications you explicitly allow or silence retain your chosen rules. Availability depends on compatible hardware, software, language, and region. See Apple’s Apple Intelligence notification guide.

Whether a notification is allowed to interrupt you and whether it appears on the Lock Screen are separate choices. Focus Options include a setting for showing silenced notifications on the Lock Screen. Hiding one there does not mean it was deleted. Previews and notification grouping are controlled separately under Settings > Notifications. Apple covers these controls in its Focus setup guide and notification settings guide.

Will notifications arrive when Focus ends?
Focus delays notifications to reduce interruptions, but do not count on every silenced notification arriving at one guaranteed moment as soon as you turn Focus off. Apple documents Scheduled Summary as a separate feature that groups selected notifications for scheduled delivery. If you want a summary, configure it separately in Settings > Notifications > Scheduled Summary. Otherwise, check Notification Center and the app’s notification settings for alerts you expected to see. Apple’s notification settings guide describes both Focus and scheduled summaries.
Can other people see that Focus is on?
If Share Focus Status is enabled for the active Focus, people contacting you in supported contexts, such as Messages, may see that your notifications are silenced. This is an optional availability signal; it does not determine which alerts your iPhone allows, and Apple’s cited guidance does not say that it reveals the Focus’s name. Manage it at Settings > Focus > Focus Status, where you can choose which Focus profiles share status. It does not appear to every caller or in every messaging app.

What happens on other Apple devices?
With Share Across Devices enabled, the same Focus settings can be used across Apple devices signed in to the same Apple Account. Notifications are also routed between iPhone and Apple Watch: by default, an alert goes to one device or the other, not both, and Apple says an unlocked iPhone receives the alert instead of the Watch. If notifications seem inconsistent, check the active Focus and notification settings on the relevant devices. See Apple’s Focus setup guide and its notifications support article.

How to turn Focus off or change its rules
- Turn it off: Open Control Center, tap the active Focus, then tap it to turn it off. Apple’s Do Not Disturb guide explains how to manage it.
- Change who or what can notify you: Go to Settings > Focus, select the Focus, and review People and Apps.
- Review appearance and sharing: In that Focus, check Options for Lock Screen display and Focus Status for sharing.
- Check automatic activation: Review the Focus’s schedule and any Focus filters if it turns on or behaves differently than expected.
- Troubleshoot an app that stays quiet: If Focus is off but an app still does not alert you, check Settings > Notifications and the app’s own notification controls. Apple’s notification settings guide covers those settings.
