1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteAfter pickup, food scraps are taken to a local transfer or processing facility. There, workers or equipment remove contaminants before the material is broken down through aerobic composting, anaerobic digestion, or a combination of the two. Depending on the system, the result may be tested finished compost, biogas and digestate, or material that still needs further composting. The route, timing, accepted scraps, and end use vary by program.
What happens after the truck collects the scraps?
- Transport: A collection truck takes the organics to a transfer station or processing facility. Toronto says its Green Bin material follows this route; other municipal and private programs may handle transport differently. City of Toronto
- Preparation and contamination removal: Facilities unload and prepare the material, screening out plastic bags and other non-organics. Toronto says removed contaminants go to landfill. Calgary describes screening plastic, metal, and large objects after vessel processing, with those items also sent to landfill. Screening reduces contamination; it does not turn unwanted items into compost. City of Toronto City of Calgary
- Biological processing: Microorganisms break down the organic material. Some facilities use oxygen-based composting; others use anaerobic digestion, which takes place without oxygen. The process may also include both.
- Finishing and checks: Compost may be screened, cured, sampled, and tested against local quality criteria before it is used or sold.
- Distribution or use: Finished compost can go to agriculture, landscaping, road projects, community gardens, residents, or retail markets, depending on the program.
How composting and digestion differ
Aerobic composting
Aerobic composting uses oxygen as microorganisms break down scraps. Chicago describes mixing food scraps with yard waste in long windrows. Calgary describes shredding feedstock and processing it in aerated vessels before screening and finishing. These are examples of local facility methods, not a single standard used by all pickup programs. City of Chicago City of Calgary

Anaerobic digestion
Anaerobic digestion uses microorganisms to break down organic material in the absence of oxygen. It produces biogas and digestate. In Toronto’s process, the remaining organic material spends approximately two weeks in digesters, after which the digestate is composted outdoors over several months. That route is not universal: not every program uses digestion or produces the same outputs. City of Toronto

Published timelines describe different facilities and stages, so they are examples rather than comparable guarantees.

| Program | Published duration | What the figure describes |
|---|---|---|
| Toronto | Approximately two weeks, followed by several months | Time in anaerobic digesters, then outdoor composting; the city page was modified January 5, 2026. City of Toronto |
| Chicago | About three months | The windrow process described for its food-scrap drop-off program; page date not stated. City of Chicago |
| Calgary | Approximately 60 days | Facility process from start to finish; page date not stated. The city page also describes an expansion expected in 2026, so facility details are time-sensitive. City of Calgary |
| Hennepin County regional business program | Six to nine months | Duration for the described commercial organics program; hauler list last updated December 2025. Hennepin County |
The figures cover different equipment, feedstocks, and process stages. They do not establish how long every pickup program takes, or what share of collected material becomes saleable compost.
What happens to bags and other contaminants?
Rules differ by program. Chicago’s food-scrap drop-off program does not accept bags, including certified compostable bags. Toronto describes removing plastic bags and contaminants before processing, and Calgary describes screening out non-compostable items after vessel processing. In either case, mistakenly added material may be discarded rather than composted. City of Chicago City of Toronto City of Calgary

Accepted food and packaging also vary. Austin Resource Recovery cautions that what is acceptable depends on the hauler, location, and process; its guidance notes that meat, seafood, dairy, bones, and certified compostable products are accepted only in select systems. Check your local program’s list rather than assuming a food scrap or product marked compostable is allowed. Austin Resource Recovery

What happens to the finished compost?
When material has been processed and meets the relevant quality criteria, compost can be used as a soil amendment. Calgary reports laboratory analysis for its Category A compost. Toronto says its finished compost is tested against Ontario Compost Quality Standards, then used by commercial and agricultural sectors and distributed to residents at Community Environment Days and certain Drop-Off Depots from spring to fall. Hennepin County describes uses including agriculture, landscaping, and road projects. Those destinations depend on the local program and product. City of Calgary City of Toronto Hennepin County

How to find out what your pickup program does
Look up your municipal program or hauler’s instructions and check the details that determine the actual route from bin to end use:
- Which food scraps and paper products are accepted.
- Whether liners, certified compostable bags, or compostable packaging are allowed.
- Whether processing uses aerobic composting, anaerobic digestion, or both.
- Whether a published timeline covers the full process or only one stage.
- Whether finished compost is tested and how it is used or distributed.
