Your direct deposits and automatic payments may keep working if another bank takes over your failed bank’s deposits—but they may be interrupted if the FDIC pays insured deposits directly. The FDIC’s resolution notice for your bank is the deciding guide: check it before changing payroll or bill-payment details.
What happens depends on how the FDIC resolves the bank
When an insured bank closes, the FDIC may arrange for another bank to assume its deposits, or it may pay insured balances to customers. These routes have different consequences for incoming deposits and outgoing payments.

| What to expect | Another bank assumes deposits | FDIC payoff |
|---|---|---|
| Direct deposits | The FDIC says they are redirected to the acquiring bank. In some resolutions, deposits continued without customers changing their instructions. | Accounts are frozen while insured balances are determined. The FDIC may temporarily arrange for some direct government payments to be handled through a nearby bank; check the specific instructions. |
| Automatic payments and outstanding payment requests | They may continue. The outcome depends on the resolution and the acquiring bank’s instructions. | Requests presented after closure may be returned unpaid because they cannot be charged to the frozen account. |
| Account details | They may remain unchanged initially, but do not assume they will stay that way. | Follow the FDIC’s instructions for accessing insured funds and arranging future transactions. |
| What you need to do | Read notices from the FDIC and acquiring bank, then confirm whether payment details need updating. | Contact payers and billers to set up replacement arrangements and provide other funds for bills whose payments are returned. |
The FDIC describes a purchase-and-assumption transaction as its preferred and common approach. Its guidance on payments to depositors explains the two paths and their general effects.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf another bank takes over your deposits
You generally become a customer of the acquiring bank and can access insured funds there. The FDIC says direct deposits—including Social Security payments—are redirected to that bank. In examples involving First Republic and Republic First, the FDIC said direct deposits and automatic payment services continued, and account numbers remained unchanged until customers received written notice. Those examples show what can happen; they do not guarantee identical handling in every bank resolution.

Read the failed bank’s FDIC resolution page and any communications from the acquiring bank. Confirm whether your routing number or account number changed before you edit payroll, benefit, subscription, or biller instructions. If a deposit or debit does not arrive as expected, contact the payer or biller and the bank handling the resolution.
If the FDIC pays insured deposits directly
When no bank assumes the deposits, the FDIC freezes accounts to determine insured balances and generally pays insured funds, usually by check. Outstanding checks and other payment requests presented after closure may be returned unpaid and marked to show the bank is closed. The return itself does not reflect on your credit standing, according to the FDIC, but you are responsible for arranging other funds with creditors whose payments were returned.

How soon can you access insured money?
Federal law requires the FDIC to make insured-deposit payments “as soon as possible.” The FDIC’s stated goal is to pay within two business days, but that is a goal, not a guaranteed date for each customer. Its Deposit Insurance FAQs say payment has historically occurred within a few days, often the next business day, through a replacement account at another insured bank or by check.

Deposit insurance covers eligible balances, including principal and accrued interest through the date the bank failed, up to the applicable coverage limits. Amounts above insured limits are not necessarily available immediately or guaranteed: the FDIC acts as receiver, collects the failed bank’s assets, and settles its debts, including claims for uninsured deposits.
