A 2.4 GHz device that will not connect may be having one of several different problems: it cannot find the network, rejects the password, connects only near the router, or joins Wi-Fi but cannot communicate with its app or other devices. Start by identifying which failure you have, then try the reversible checks below before changing router settings.
First identify where setup fails
Check whether the 2.4 GHz network appears in the setup app, whether the device accepts the password, whether other devices can use your home Wi-Fi, and whether the target device works near the router. These clues help separate a network outage from a device-specific or coverage problem.

- If no devices can connect, restart the router. If the network remains unavailable, contact your internet provider.
- If only the target device fails, check its band compatibility, credentials, signal, and local-network settings.
- If it connects to Wi-Fi but setup cannot finish or the app cannot reach it, investigate whether local communication is blocked.
Check band compatibility and network name
A device that supports only 2.4 GHz cannot connect to a network that broadcasts only 5 GHz. Check the device’s current setup instructions and confirm that the router’s 2.4 GHz radio is enabled. If the router uses one network name for both bands, that does not automatically prevent setup: Google says, “Most Wi-Fi routers allow devices on both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks to communicate with each other (bridging).” Google Home and Nest Help explains band selection and bridging.

Router controls differ by model. For example, the TP-Link Archer C20(EU) Revision 6.2.0 user guide describes Smart Connect as sharing a name and password across bands; on that model, disabling it allows separate band settings. Do not assume another router uses the same labels or behavior. See the Archer C20 guide.

Verify the password and whether the network is hidden
Enter the exact Wi-Fi name (SSID) and password, including capitalization. A hidden network may not appear in a setup list. If the app provides a manual network-entry option, enter the network name and credentials there; whether that option exists depends on the device and app. Google’s camera setup guidance covers hidden networks and network discovery.
Retry close to the router
Move the device and the phone running its setup app near the router, then try again. This is a simple way to test whether distance, walls, or interference are affecting discovery or setup. Google recommends keeping its smart speakers and displays within 4–6 m (15–20 ft) of the router during setup; that is guidance for those products, not a universal Wi-Fi range threshold. See Google’s smart speaker and display setup advice.

Distance, physical obstacles, neighboring Wi-Fi networks, and other sources of interference can affect Wi-Fi performance. Google’s Wi-Fi performance guidance describes these factors. If the device works near the router but not at the intended installation spot, you have evidence of a coverage problem. Consider improving placement before buying equipment; an extender is relevant only if coverage is the cause, not if the password, band, or local communication is wrong. Google lists an extender as an option for a camera that cannot get a usable signal at its location. Camera setup troubleshooting.

Restart the router and device, then check local access
Restart the router and target device, and reopen or update the setup app if appropriate. Then distinguish joining Wi-Fi from communicating over the local network: a device may have a Wi-Fi connection but still be unreachable by its app, hub, or display.

Router features called AP isolation or client isolation can block devices on the same Wi-Fi from communicating locally. Guest networks may also restrict communication, depending on the router. If the device’s setup is failing at the local-communication stage, check the router manual for these settings. Google recommends disabling AP isolation when it causes setup trouble and trying the phone and smart device on the same 2.4 GHz network. Router terminology and guest-network behavior vary, so change only the relevant setting and restore temporary changes you do not need. Google’s setup troubleshooting guidance.
Use a hotspot only to isolate the problem
After basic checks, you can try connecting the device to a temporary phone hotspot. If it joins the hotspot but not your home Wi-Fi, that suggests the device can use Wi-Fi and narrows the problem to the home network; it does not reveal which router setting is responsible.

- Dual Band WiFi Extender: Up to 44% more bandwidth than single band N300 WiFi extenders. Boost Internet WiFi coverage up to 1200 square feet and connects up to 30 devices(2.4GHz: 300Mbps; 5GHz: 433Mbps)
A hotspot is not a reliable permanent substitute for home Wi-Fi. Google says hotspots are not fully supported for Nest and Home devices, and results may depend on mobile coverage, interference, and your data plan. If the device fails on both networks, consult the device maker’s support guidance for the exact model. Google’s smart speaker and display troubleshooting guide.

Check model-specific network requirements before changing security
Do not assume every smart device has the same network requirements. For example, Google’s Nest Protect guidance identifies a 2.4 GHz broadcast, IPv6 support, multicast, wireless isolation, and firewall or parental-control settings as relevant to that product. Those details should not be applied to other devices without checking their own requirements. See Google’s Nest Protect connection guidance.
