If a platform closes, removes a title, loses distribution rights, disables an account, or stops supporting a device, you may lose access or the ability to download the content again. What happens depends on the service’s terms, the file and its technical protections, and the consumer law where you live.
Do you own a digital copy after you buy it?
Not necessarily in the same way you own a book or disc. A purchase label alone does not establish that you have a permanent copy free of account, licensing, or device restrictions. Check the terms for the specific service and item: they may grant a limited license, require an account, or make access subject to other conditions.

For example, PlayStation’s US terms say access to some purchased licensed content can depend on device compatibility and continued availability from third-party licensors. What happens when a platform shuts down or removes a title?
Removal from sale and withdrawal of existing access are different events. A title might disappear from a store while remaining available in the library of someone who already bought it. Or the service may also stop allowing access or downloads. Apple’s Media Services terms say: “Purchased Content will generally remain available for you to download, redownload, or otherwise access from Apple. Though it is unlikely, subsequent to your purchase, Content may be removed from the Services and become unavailable for further download or access from Apple.” Apple Media Services Terms and Conditions

A shutdown can affect different parts of access in different ways. You might keep a file already stored on a device but lose redownloads, account authentication, cloud synchronization, updates, or compatibility with a future device. These are possible dependencies, not inevitable outcomes of every closure; the platform’s terms and shutdown notice are the relevant evidence for a particular case.
Can a downloaded file still stop working?
Yes. Downloading a file does not by itself prove that it is independent of the service. A DRM-protected file may require an authorized account, compatible software, or an online check. A DRM-free file is less dependent on a platform for playback, but its use can still be subject to the license terms.

- DRM-free download: The file may be playable without the original service, but check the license and whether the download is an exportable file.
- DRM-protected download: Playback or transfer may depend on account authentication, approved software, device limits, or other restrictions.
- Cloud access or streaming: Content that is not stored as an independently usable file can remain dependent on the platform and its servers.
PlayStation’s terms identify compatibility and third-party availability as possible conditions for some licensed content. Apple’s terms distinguish DRM-free from DRM-protected files. Can you get a refund or another remedy?
There is no single worldwide rule that makes every removal refundable—or lets every platform withdraw every purchase without consequence. Contract terms matter, but mandatory consumer law may also apply. The result depends on your country, the kind of transaction, what was promised or disclosed, and why access ended.

For consumers in the EU
Directive (EU) 2019/770 covers specified contracts for the supply of digital content and digital services. Member States applied its rules from 1 January 2022. For covered cases of lack of conformity, Article 14 provides remedies under its conditions, including bringing the content or service into conformity, a proportionate price reduction, or termination of the contract. A restriction arising from a third party’s rights that limits use may also be relevant to conformity. Whether a particular removal qualifies depends on the facts and national rules implementing the directive; the directive does not make every catalog change an automatic refund. For other locations
Check the consumer-protection rules that apply where you live. The terms governing the transaction, the purchase date, any notice given at purchase, and the platform’s stated reason for removal may all matter. The sources cited here do not establish a universal remedy for consumers outside the EU.

What to do if you have lost access
- Verify the transaction. Sign in to the account used for the purchase, check the library, and locate the receipt or transaction record.
- Find out what changed. Read the item’s usage terms and any email or in-app notice. Confirm whether the title was merely removed from sale or whether existing access and redownloads were withdrawn.
- Check the file and device requirements. Find out whether you can download or export the content, whether it is DRM-free, whether playback needs online authentication, and whether your device remains compatible.
- Keep the evidence. Save the receipt, the relevant terms, any removal notice, and your support correspondence.
- Contact the seller or platform. Give the title, transaction date, country, and account details, and clearly ask for restoration of access, an alternative, or a refund.
- Seek local advice if needed. If the response does not resolve the issue, contact a consumer authority or advice service in your jurisdiction. EU consumers can assess whether the facts fit their country’s rules implementing Directive 2019/770.
Can an external drive protect digital purchases?
Only in a limited way. A drive can preserve a file if the service allows you to download or export it, but it cannot preserve access that depends on a platform account or server. DRM and license restrictions may also prevent playback or transfer after a service closes. Storage is useful for an authorized, usable local file; it is not a guarantee that a digital purchase will remain accessible forever. Apple Media Services Terms and Conditions
