Deleting a Microsoft Team deletes the Dataverse for Teams environment associated with it. The environment’s apps, chatbots, workflows and Dataverse data are therefore on a different recovery path from the Team’s Microsoft 365 group and collaboration content: Microsoft documents a standard seven-day recovery period for a deleted Power Platform environment, while the associated group is normally soft-deleted for 30 days. Restoring the group should not be taken as a guarantee that the Dataverse environment will also return.
What is deleted when you delete a Team?
A Dataverse for Teams environment is linked to its associated Team. Microsoft’s Power Platform licensing FAQ says the environment is deleted when that Team is deleted. The environment holds its Dataverse data, apps, chatbots and workflows, so deleting the Team can affect all of those resources.

The Team’s Microsoft 365 group and collaboration content follow a separate lifecycle. Microsoft says deleting a Team removes activity in standard and private channels, files, chats and associated site collections. The associated group is normally soft-deleted for 30 days. Restoring the group restores Team content, including tabs and channels; Microsoft says that restoration can take up to 24 hours.

Microsoft documents separate recovery routes for the Microsoft 365 group and the Power Platform environment. The time periods below are service policy windows in Microsoft guidance; the publication year of the cited guidance is not stated.

| What you are trying to restore | Documented period or behavior | What it means for Dataverse |
|---|---|---|
| Associated Microsoft 365 group and Team content | Normally soft-deleted for 30 days. Group restoration may take up to 24 hours. | Restores group-related Team content, but does not by itself establish that the Dataverse for Teams environment is recovered. |
| Deleted Power Platform environment | Generally recoverable for seven days after deletion. | This is the urgent documented recovery window for the environment and its Dataverse data. |
| System backups for a Teams environment | Microsoft documents seven-day system-backup retention. | Self-restore is documented, subject to source, target and other restore constraints. |
The crucial uncertainty is what happens if the group is restored after the environment’s seven-day recovery period. Microsoft’s documented group and environment recovery paths do not explicitly settle whether restoring the group at that point revives the deleted environment. Do not rely on the group’s 30-day period as evidence that Dataverse data remains recoverable for 30 days.
What to do if the deletion was accidental
- Act promptly on the Power Platform environment. Use the available Power Platform recovery controls to check for and recover the deleted environment within its documented seven-day window.
- Restore the Microsoft 365 group as well. Follow Microsoft’s Team or group restoration process to recover group-related Team content. This is a separate action from recovering the environment.
- Check available backups and restore constraints. Microsoft documents system backups and self-restore for Teams environments, but the restore options are subject to limitations. Confirm that the required source and target are eligible in your tenant.
- Check retention and legal-hold coverage. Microsoft says content protected by a retention policy remains available through eDiscovery searches. Whether particular content is preserved depends on your organization’s configured policies and holds.
If the seven-day environment recovery period has passed, the cited Microsoft guidance does not establish that restoring the group will bring back Dataverse. Contact your Microsoft administrator or support channel promptly to assess available recovery options; do not assume that retained group content includes the deleted environment.

Retention and eDiscovery are not the same as environment recovery
Retention policies or legal holds can affect what associated content is preserved. Microsoft says content covered by a retention policy remains available through eDiscovery searches, but that is not the same as restoring a deleted Dataverse for Teams environment or making its apps and workflows operational again. Administrators should verify which data is covered and where it is stored rather than treating a retention rule as a complete environment backup.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow to reduce risk before deleting a Team
- Inventory the information and workloads in Dataverse separately from channel conversations, chats, SharePoint files and other connected services.
- Confirm organizational retention and legal-hold requirements before deletion, and verify that the relevant policies cover the content that must be preserved.
- Check whether a supported backup or restore route is available for the Teams environment and understand its constraints before you need it.
- If the Team may be needed again, consider archiving it and delaying deletion until the decision is final. Microsoft’s lifecycle guidance recommends considering archive and postponing deletion while the Team is still needed.
Do not confuse deletion with inactivity cleanup
Deleting a Team is different from Microsoft’s automatic cleanup of an inactive Dataverse for Teams environment. In the documented inactivity lifecycle, an environment is disabled after 90 days without activity, then deleted after a further 30 days in the disabled state. A deleted environment has a seven-day recovery period. Those inactivity timers are not extra time added to the Team-deletion recovery window.
