When the paid period ends, access to those no-cost games stops—even if a game is still installed. Extra and Premium catalog games have an additional condition: you need the appropriate tier, and a title can also become unavailable when it leaves the catalog.
What happens to monthly games you claimed?
A monthly game added to your library is a PS Plus membership benefit, not a game purchase. Sony says monthly games can be played while you have an active membership; its cancellation guidance says no-cost monthly games become unavailable once the subscription ends. The game may remain visible in your library or installed on your console, but that does not restore permission to play it. Sony does not say that expiry deletes the claim from the account. Does access end as soon as you cancel?
No. Turning off automatic renewal is different from the membership expiring. Sony’s UK cancellation page says benefits continue until the end of the subscription period already paid for. Monthly games become unavailable when that period ends, not merely because you canceled renewal earlier.
Monthly games and catalog games are different
A monthly game is claimed as a membership benefit. A Game Catalog or Classics Catalog title is available through a qualifying tier while it remains in the service. As Sony’s US PlayStation Plus games FAQ describes, catalog titles can have announced removal dates and leave the service. Losing the relevant tier, ending the subscription, or a title leaving the catalog can therefore end access to a catalog game. Catalog listings and removal dates vary by region and change over time.

What happens to add-ons and other items?
Purchased DLC or add-ons for a catalog game do not make the base game playable after you lose access to it. Sony says those add-ons become inaccessible when the membership expires or the game leaves the service; they can be used again if you resubscribe with the required access or buy the game. Sony’s UK cancellation guidance distinguishes subscription benefits from certain items that are kept: redeemed PS Plus packs and avatars, and games bought at a PS Plus discount, remain yours after expiry. That statement applies to those named items; it should not be taken to mean every downloadable bonus or a no-cost monthly game becomes a permanent purchase. Sony’s UK support page lists the items.

How to regain access
- If renewal is canceled but the paid period is still running: Check the membership end date in your account. Benefits remain available through the paid period, according to Sony’s UK cancellation guidance.
- If a monthly game is locked after expiry: An active PS Plus membership is required to play it again. Sony’s guidance says access to monthly games is tied to membership; the claim itself is not described as deleted.
- If a catalog game is locked: Check that your active tier includes the relevant catalog and that the title is still available in your region. Resubscribing alone cannot restore access to a title that has left the catalog.
- If you want to use purchased add-ons for a removed catalog game: Sony identifies buying the base game as an alternative to regaining catalog access, or you can regain access through an eligible membership if the title remains available.
If you plan to buy a game after losing subscription access, keep its saved data in mind. Sony’s cited support pages do not comprehensively specify every condition for save-data retention or restoration, so check the relevant game and account guidance rather than assuming every save will be available in every situation.

For a particular game, consult the live catalog for your region before relying on an announced removal date or assuming a tier includes it.
