What happens after you reconnect a battery—or whether a phone can run while plugged in without one—depends on the exact model. Android can support purpose-built devices that run from external power without an internal battery, but that does not mean an ordinary phone will do so. Battery removal alone does not show that saved files have been erased; unsaved work may be lost when power cuts out.
What happens when the battery is removed?
A phone that relies on its battery for operating power shuts down when that power is removed. Its restart and charging behavior after the battery is reinstalled depends on the handset. Android also supports certain products designed to run from external power without an internal battery; that is a purpose-built configuration, not a guarantee for every phone.

Removing a battery is not, by itself, evidence that saved data has been erased. But a sudden loss of power can interrupt work that has not been saved. The consequences of a planned battery swap also vary: for example, NTT DOCOMO’s KY-51D guide warns that an incomplete swap can cause power-off and loss of unsaved data.

Can an Android phone run without a battery if it is plugged in?
Some Android products are designed to operate from an external power source, such as an AC outlet or USB port, without an internal battery. Android Open Source Project (AOSP) documentation describes this as a supported product configuration. For Android 9 and later, its documented defaults when no battery is detected show the battery as absent, status unknown, and capacity at 0%, while the system is still treated as running on external power rather than shutting down for low battery. Device implementations may need kernel or Health HAL changes to report their actual power and battery state accurately.

This platform support does not establish that a typical Android phone will boot or keep running with its battery removed and a charger attached. Check the manufacturer’s documentation for the exact model rather than treating a charger as a substitute for its battery.
What do phone manuals say about battery removal?
These examples show why the model-specific instructions matter. A removable battery, a sealed battery, and a phone with a documented swap procedure are not interchangeable cases.

Will removing the battery erase data or interrupt communication?
Battery removal does not establish that saved files are erased. The clearest documented risk in the examples above is losing unsaved work if power is interrupted: the KY-51D guide warns of that outcome if its swap is not completed in time. Back up important work before a planned repair or swap, and follow the phone’s own instructions.

How to handle a battery safely
- Identify the exact make and model, then check its user guide or service instructions before touching the battery.
- If the manufacturer identifies the battery as non-removable, do not pry the phone open. Use the manufacturer or authorized service provider named in its guidance.
- For a user-removable battery, follow the device’s procedure. HMD, for example, instructs users to switch off the device and unplug the charger first.
- Avoid bending, puncturing, crushing, or shorting battery contacts. Do not use a visibly damaged battery; seek model-specific service guidance.
- Back up important work before planned service or a swap, since an interrupted power supply can put unsaved work at risk.
