If the broadcaster’s internet connection drops, new video cannot reach the streaming platform. The stream may stutter or freeze first; if the interruption continues, the encoder can disconnect and the platform may show viewers an offline message or disconnect screen. Whether it reconnects, how long the stream stays available, and what happens to its recording depend on the platform and encoder.
What happens when the connection degrades or cuts out?
A live broadcast sends video from the broadcaster’s encoder to the platform’s ingest server. OBS says that connection runs directly between the creator’s computer and the streaming service; OBS does not provide intermediary streaming servers. If the route becomes unstable or cannot sustain the selected bitrate, OBS may report dropped frames and discard some frames rather than buffering the video indefinitely. Lose enough frames and the encoder may disconnect.

- The connection weakens: OBS’s dropped-frame count may rise if the network path is unstable or the configured bitrate is too high for the available upload capacity.
- Viewers see impaired playback: A brief disruption can cause stuttering or buffering. If delivery stops, no newly captured video can reach the platform until the connection returns.
- The encoder may disconnect: OBS warns that dropping too many frames can disconnect it from the streaming server.
- The platform handles the interruption: Depending on its features, viewers may see a freeze, buffering, an offline state, or a disconnect message while the broadcaster tries to reconnect.
There is no universal reconnect timer or guarantee that a stream will resume as the same broadcast. Behavior varies by platform and encoder.

Viewers may see the picture freeze, buffer, or switch to a platform-provided message. If the broadcaster reconnects, live video may resume, but the interruption’s visible result depends on the platform’s player and recovery features.

A viewer’s buffering does not necessarily mean the broadcaster lost internet. A viewer’s own network, device, or location can cause playback problems even while the broadcaster is sending video without dropped frames. OBS’s local statistics help diagnose the broadcaster-to-ingest connection, not every viewer’s playback.
What happens on Twitch?
Twitch’s Disconnect Protection is a platform-specific exception to the assumption that an interruption ends the stream immediately. Twitch’s official help text says viewers can see a message for up to 90 seconds while the streamer reconnects. If the streamer does not reconnect in that period, Twitch says the stream ends normally. Twitch also says the VOD will be continuous. The help text names OBS Studio, Streamlabs OBS, XSplit, Twitch Studio, and Twitch broadcasts from iOS and Android; check Twitch Stream Settings for current availability and controls.

What happens on YouTube Live?
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends choosing a quality that is reliable for the broadcaster’s internet connection, testing upload speed and the stream before going live, and monitoring stream health and messages during the event. YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers on different devices and networks. That gives viewers playback options; it does not replace the broadcaster’s need to deliver a feed to YouTube.

- Check OBS’s connection indicator and dropped-frame count. These help distinguish a network-to-ingest problem from encoding or viewer-side playback symptoms.
- Lower the video bitrate if upload capacity is tight. OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guidance, dated September 30, 2024, suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting point—not a guarantee or a platform-wide limit. A lower bitrate can improve reliability at the cost of picture quality. Dynamic bitrate may lower quality, but OBS notes it does not fix the underlying connection issue. Stay within the streaming platform’s limits.
- Test another ingest server or service as a diagnostic. This can help determine whether the problem is specific to a route, server, or service. Testing another service is not a repair for an issue with the original service.
- Try Ethernet if Wi-Fi is the weak link. OBS recommends a wired connection because Wi-Fi may be unstable. An Ethernet cable can address local wireless instability, but it cannot restore service during a modem failure, ISP outage, or upstream routing interruption.
- Check software and drivers if trouble continues. OBS identifies VPNs, security software, network-prioritization utilities, and network drivers as possible sources of interference or instability.
- Restart local network equipment if it appears to be failing. Restart the modem and router when they show connectivity problems. If the interruption persists, contact the ISP; congestion or changes along the provider’s route may be outside your control.
- For YouTube, test under realistic conditions. Use representative audio and motion before the event, then watch YouTube’s stream-health messages while live.
Can a backup internet connection prevent the interruption?
A second connection, such as cellular service, can be a contingency, but seamless switching is not guaranteed. Before relying on it, check whether the encoder and platform can resume the existing broadcast and whether the change in public IP or ingest route affects reconnection. Also consider the backup connection’s stable upload capacity, latency, data limits, and setup cost. A second internet path cannot be assumed to preserve the same live session without interruption.
