No. In 2025, 720p is still considered HD by both Netflix and YouTube, and it can be a sensible choice on a small screen, a limited connection or a metered data plan. It shows less detail than 1080p or 4K on a compatible display, but the resolution you actually get also depends on the title, plan, device, app or browser, and network.
Is 720p still HD?
Yes. Netflix says its HD label can mean either 720p or 1080p. YouTube defines HD as 720 to 1080 vertical lines. So 720p has not become obsolete simply because higher resolutions are available.

Those labels do not guarantee that every title or device offers every resolution. YouTube says playback availability depends in part on licensing agreements and device support. Netflix also notes that title availability and device capability affect whether HD or 4K is available. Netflix’s video quality guidance and YouTube’s HD and 4K playback guidance explain these limits.

- On a phone or small tablet: At ordinary viewing distances, the extra detail in 1080p may matter less than it does on a large screen. A 2024 study with 50 participants and four handheld devices found no statistically significant perceived difference between 720p and 1080p in its tested conditions. That result is limited to those devices and test material; it does not establish what viewers will see on televisions or with every kind of video. Read the study abstract.
- On a constrained or unstable connection: A lower resolution can make playback easier to sustain. Netflix says it adapts video quality to connection speed, and may reduce quality when a connection is slow or unstable.
- When data use matters: Higher-quality video uses more data. Netflix also notes that higher quality may use more energy, so 720p can be a practical compromise on mobile data or other limited connections.
- When the source is only 720p: Selecting a 4K-capable device cannot add genuine detail that is absent from the source.
720p vs. 1080p vs. 4K: what changes?
Resolution is only one part of perceived quality. Screen size and viewing distance affect how visible added detail is; source quality and compression matter too. A large television viewed from nearby may make the differences between 720p, 1080p and 4K easier to notice than a handheld screen. The available evidence here does not establish a universal screen-size or distance threshold.

| Resolution | What to expect | Netflix recommended connection speed | YouTube approximate recommended sustained speed |
|---|---|---|---|
| 720p | HD; often a practical balance for small screens, restricted bandwidth or data limits. | 3 Mbps | 2.5 Mbps |
| 1080p | More detail than 720p when the screen, source and viewing conditions make it visible. | 5 Mbps | 5 Mbps |
| 4K / UHD | More detail than 1080p on supported titles and playback setups; a 4K source and compatible screen are needed to see native 4K detail. | 15 Mbps | 20 Mbps |
These are Netflix’s recommended connection speeds and YouTube’s approximate recommended sustained speeds, not guaranteed delivered video bitrates or promises of a particular playback resolution. Actual playback can vary with network stability and the service’s title, plan and device support. See Netflix’s connection-speed recommendations and YouTube’s system requirements and supported devices.
Why is my stream only 720p?
First check whether 720p is the highest option the title and playback setup offer. If 1080p or 4K is available but playback remains at 720p, work through these checks before replacing your TV or buying a new device.

- Say goodbye to batteries: Keep your remote powered for months on a single charge.
- Check the title and plan. Some titles are not offered in HD or 4K, and a service’s plan can affect available quality. Confirm the specific title’s quality options in the service.
- Check the device and playback route. The TV, streaming device, app or browser may not support the higher tier. Netflix notes that device chains can limit quality; YouTube says some browser playback is not available in HD. Try the service’s supported app or another compatible device if available.
- Check the connection, not only its advertised speed. The service needs a sufficiently fast, sustained connection. Wi-Fi interference, congestion or instability may cause a service to lower quality or start at a lower resolution before stepping up.
- Check data or quality settings. Account, app or device data settings may restrict playback quality. Review the service’s playback and data-use controls.
- Allow for adaptive playback. Netflix says it adjusts quality to connection speed to keep playback going. A video may begin at lower resolution and improve as playback continues.
A 4K-capable device is worth considering only if your current device is the compatibility bottleneck and the title and service support the feature. YouTube lists Fire TV Stick 4K for Primetime Channels, but that feature-specific listing does not establish support across all YouTube features or other services. A new device also cannot turn a 720p source into native 4K.

No. It remains an HD option and can be the right trade-off when screen size, connection reliability or data use matters more than maximum detail. Choose 1080p or 4K when your service, title, plan, device and connection all support it—and when the improvement is useful on your screen. If you are troubleshooting unexpectedly limited quality, check those factors before spending money on hardware.
