When a publisher removes Denuvo Anti-Tamper, it changes the game’s build—usually through an official update. The game may still have other copy protection, and it may require the new patch to launch. Removal can affect performance, but faster frame rates, shorter loading times, or better stability are not guaranteed.
What “Denuvo removal” means
Denuvo removal is a change made by the publisher to a game build. It is not a license that players need to cancel or remove themselves. The publisher’s update may remove Denuvo Anti-Tamper while leaving platform DRM or other copy-protection systems in place.

For example, KRAFTON’s December 2025 Hi-Fi RUSH announcement said Denuvo had been removed but that a form of copy protection remained. The announcement also said the game’s own anti-tampering features would stay active. Removing one protection layer therefore does not necessarily remove all DRM, anti-cheat, or anti-tamper technology.

Usually, follow the publisher’s instructions for the title: some removal updates can be installed like other game patches, while a publisher may make a particular update mandatory. Whether an older build will continue to launch is title-specific.

Hi-Fi RUSH: a mandatory patch example
KRAFTON said the PC version’s internal structure would change significantly and required players to install the latest patch. Its notice set a deadline of January 16, 2026, at 00:00 KST, after which the unpatched version would not run. That deadline has passed. For a current installation, use the game’s official update channel and install the current build rather than relying on an old copy.
This is not a general rule for every Denuvo removal. Check the publisher’s announcement for the game you play to find out whether a patch is required and what happens to older versions.

Will the game run faster without Denuvo?
Possibly, but removal alone is not evidence of a performance improvement. The effect depends on how the game used Denuvo and on what else changed in the update. The available sources do not establish a general before-and-after gain in frame rate, loading time, CPU use, or stability.
Denuvo/Irdeto’s 2023 datasheet describes its product as having “no perceived impact.” That is the vendor’s claim, not an independent measurement. In a 2017 statement about RiME, producer Cody Bradley described a “small performance hit” from Denuvo in that game, while saying the team did not believe it explained the problems then being reported. That title-specific statement is not a benchmark and does not predict results for other games.

A meaningful comparison would require testing matched game versions on the same hardware and settings. If the removal patch also changes other parts of the game, a difference after updating cannot automatically be attributed to Denuvo alone.
Does the update delete every Denuvo-related file?
Do not assume that an uninstall clause tells you what a publisher’s later update removes. A SEGA EULA example for one Steam product says certain Denuvo files may remain after uninstalling that product; it does not establish what a removal patch leaves behind or what happens in every Denuvo-protected game.

Install the publisher’s official patch rather than manually deleting files or modifying the game. The available information does not establish that every removal patch deletes every related file.

What to check for a specific game
- Protection: Which protection did the publisher remove, and does its announcement say anything remains?
- Update requirement: Is a patch mandatory, and does the publisher specify what happens to older builds?
- Launch or activation: Does the announcement document any change to online checks, activation, or launching?
- Performance: Is there a controlled comparison of the same game versions on matched hardware, rather than an assumption based on removal alone?
- Other changes: Does the publisher mention effects on saves, multiplayer, or other features?
For Hi-Fi RUSH, KRAFTON’s notice and official Steam announcement document the remaining protection and mandatory update. They do not report a measured performance improvement.
