What “directly” means in VS Code
VS Code can be extended with tools installed from the Visual Studio Marketplace. Its own editor does not include an Excel-style spreadsheet grid for editing workbook cells. An extension can add that interface, so editing is possible inside VS Code after you install one; it is not a built-in feature. See Microsoft’s Extension Marketplace documentation.
Use a spreadsheet editor extension for XLSX changes
The SheetLab — Excel Viewer & Query listing describes opening XLSX workbooks in a spreadsheet interface, editing them, and saving changes. This makes it a documented option for workbook editing in VS Code, but the listing is a publisher description, not independent verification that every workbook feature is preserved.
Check the format you need
The SheetLab listing distinguishes XLSX and XLSM editing from legacy XLS support, which it describes as export-only. Check the current Marketplace listing for the format and workbook features you depend on before using it.

Review publisher trust and permissions
VS Code warns that “Extensions have the same permissions as VS Code itself.” Its Marketplace documentation also says that, starting with release 1.97, installing an extension from a third-party publisher triggers a publisher-trust confirmation. Review the publisher and the extension’s stated scope before installation.
When Data Wrangler is a better fit
Microsoft’s Data Wrangler documentation says the tool can work with .xls and .xlsx data and export cleaned data as CSV or Parquet. That supports a data-cleaning workflow, but the cited documentation does not describe saving a modified workbook back to XLSX. Choose a spreadsheet editor extension when you need to edit and save a workbook; choose Data Wrangler when your goal is to transform data and export it in one of its documented output formats.

How to choose safely
- Confirm save-back: Make sure the tool explicitly supports writing changes to XLSX if you need to keep working in a workbook.
- Check workbook compatibility: Verify support for your file format and the workbook features you rely on. The available documentation does not establish independent preservation testing for complex workbooks.
- Assess the extension: Review its Marketplace listing, publisher, stated scope, and trust prompt before installing it.
