When you open an app, the operating system loads its program from persistent storage into working memory, then the processor carries out its instructions and coordinates with other components to produce a result—such as an image on your screen or sound from speakers. This is a simplified view: modern computers overlap many operations and use specialized hardware, but the basic path explains how the parts work together.
What happens when you open a photo?
- The program is found in storage. The photo app exists as a saved program on persistent storage, such as an SSD. Storage retains information when the device is turned off.
- The operating system starts a process. It loads the program and the data it needs into RAM, then manages the running instance, or process. The operating system also coordinates access to memory and hardware.
- The processor runs instructions. The CPU fetches instructions, decodes what they ask it to do, and executes operations. It may read photo data, calculate how to display it, and send resulting data onward.
- The display presents the result. The computer’s graphics and display components turn image data into pixels you can see. Other output devices similarly turn data into sound or another useful result.
This path is a teaching model, not a claim that every task happens in a strict one-at-a-time sequence. A computer’s components communicate through interconnects, and real systems use caches and specialized processors to handle work efficiently. OpenStax describes the basic sequence of loading a stored executable into memory and having the CPU fetch, decode, and execute instructions (OpenStax: Computer Systems Organization).

How do bits represent instructions and data?
A bit is a binary digit, represented as 0 or 1. Eight bits make a byte. Programs and data are represented in binary form, using patterns of bits that hardware can store and manipulate. At the physical level, different components implement distinguishable states and operations; it is an oversimplification to say every computer component simply stores bits as high or low voltages.
In the stored-program model, memory holds both instructions and data. MIT OpenCourseWare’s Computation Structures material puts it this way: “Both instructions and data are, of course, just binary data stored in main memory.” A bit pattern does not identify itself as an instruction or a piece of data; the processor’s use of it gives it that role (MIT OpenCourseWare: Computation Structures, 9.1 Annotated Slides).

How does the CPU execute a program?
The CPU, or processor, carries out program instructions. In a simplified instruction cycle, it fetches an instruction from memory, holds it temporarily in a register, decodes the instruction, performs the requested operation, and saves a result to a register or memory. An arithmetic logic unit (ALU) handles arithmetic and logical operations, such as comparisons.
The processor repeats this work as the program runs. Modern CPUs can overlap and reorganize parts of execution, so the cycle is best understood as a useful conceptual model rather than a literal description of every internal step. Cache—fast storage close to or inside the processor—can keep frequently needed information nearby, reducing the need to fetch it from farther-away memory.

What is the difference between storage, RAM, cache, and registers?
| Component | What it is for |
|---|---|
| Persistent storage | Keeps programs and files when power is off. Examples include solid-state drives (SSDs) and hard disk drives (HDDs). |
| RAM (main memory) | Holds active programs and the data they need while the computer is working. It is volatile: its contents are not retained as working memory when power is removed. |
| Cache | Fast storage close to the CPU for information it may need soon or repeatedly. |
| Registers | Very small storage locations inside the CPU that hold values used directly in immediate processing. |
These names describe different roles, not interchangeable meanings of “memory.” The closer-to-CPU levels generally serve more immediate work, but the hierarchy is a guide, not an absolute speed guarantee for every task or design. OpenStax explains the relationship between programs, RAM, cache, and secondary storage in its overview of computer organization (OpenStax: Computer Systems Organization).
What does the operating system do?
A program is saved instructions; a process is an instance of a program that is running. The operating system loads programs, manages processes and memory, and provides a way for software to use hardware. It also keeps track of how a program’s addresses relate to physical memory.

Operating systems can use virtual memory, which gives processes an address-space abstraction and lets the system move pages between physical RAM and storage-backed swap or a page file. Virtual memory is a memory-management technique, not simply “extra RAM”: retrieving data from storage-backed paging can be much slower than accessing physical memory. OpenStax explains processes, virtual memory, and persistent storage in its discussion of operating-system concepts (OpenStax: Fundamental OS Concepts).
How do input and output devices fit in?
Input and output devices bridge human actions and computer data. A keyboard turns key presses into signals the computer can process; a microphone converts sound into input data. On the other side, a display presents image data as pixels, while speakers turn audio data into sound. Interfaces connect devices to the rest of the system, and interconnects carry data among components.

“Input, storage, processing, output” is a useful first framework for thinking about computer systems. It is a simplification: a device may perform several roles, and work can move back and forth among components rather than following one straight line. Intel uses this framework in its educational introduction to computers (Intel: Introduction to Computers).
Do phones and appliances work the same way?
The same broad ideas apply beyond desktop and laptop computers. Phones, cameras, cars, and washing machines can contain processors, memory, peripherals, and software. However, they differ in their components and organization; not every device runs a general-purpose operating system or has the same kinds of storage, input, and output. The Open University introduces computer systems across personal and embedded devices, including their processors, memory, peripherals, and connections (The Open University: An Introduction to Computers and Computer Systems).
