On most Chromebooks, “unlocking the bootloader” usually means turning on Developer Mode—not unlocking or replacing the device’s firmware. Developer Mode relaxes verified boot, allows non-Google-signed images and provides root access. Switching into or out of it wipes local data on the device, so back up files first. Firmware changes are a separate, device-dependent step.
What “unlocking the bootloader” means on a Chromebook
Chromebooks do not have one universal bootloader-unlock procedure. The phrase is often used for two different changes:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Developer Mode: A built-in ChromeOS mode that relaxes verified boot, permits custom images that are not signed by Google and makes a root shell available. It does not necessarily rewrite or unlock the firmware. ChromiumOS’s Developer Mode documentation describes this mode and its effects.
- Firmware modification: A separate, deeper change that may involve custom firmware or an alternative bootloader. What is possible and how to recover varies by device; there is no single supported workflow for all Chromebooks. See the ChromiumOS custom firmware documentation.
If you are following a guide, check whether it asks you to enable Developer Mode or to modify firmware. They are not interchangeable, and firmware steps can carry different device-specific risks.
What changes in Developer Mode
Verified boot and security
In normal mode, verified boot helps ensure the operating system that starts is trusted. Developer Mode makes that check less strict, so non-Google-signed images can run and the system can be accessed with root privileges. That increases the ability to customize the Chromebook, but also weakens the normal startup assurance and gives software or users with root access more power to change the system.

ChromiumOS states: “NOTE: Putting your device into Developer Mode inherently makes it a little less secure.” It also warns that modifications can cause hardware, software or security problems and may void the warranty. This is a caution about the changed security model, not a claim that every Chromebook in Developer Mode will be compromised or stop working.
Local data is erased during the transition
Entering or leaving Developer Mode triggers a Mode Transition Wipe of the stateful partition, according to the ChromiumOS Developer Mode guide. Treat the transition as a local-data wipe: copy important files out before changing modes.

Google’s reset guidance specifically warns that local user data, including files in Downloads, is erased by a factory reset and recommends backing up to Google Drive or external storage. A wipe does not mean that cloud-synced files are deleted from your online account. Google’s Powerwash and data-erasure guidance describes the erasure as clearing encryption keys; it also notes that some information may remain, such as a pristine ChromeOS copy, device health or diagnostic information, forced-re-enrollment state and data synced to the cloud.
Root access and system changes
Developer Mode exposes a root shell, which is useful for system-level development and troubleshooting but removes safeguards that ordinarily limit changes to the operating system. Use it only if your task requires that access and you understand what the software or commands you run will modify.

Will the Chromebook still get updates?
It depends on what is installed and whether the Chromebook is still within its model-specific update-support period. Merely enabling Developer Mode does not universally stop official ChromeOS updates.
- ChromeOS remains installed: Check the device’s model-specific support date in Settings > About ChromeOS > Additional details > Update schedule. Google explains how to check the automatic update schedule.
- A developer or alternative image is installed: Its update behavior depends on that image and its maintainer. Older ChromiumOS design documentation warns that developer images may not update automatically; this is not a universal statement about current official ChromeOS in Developer Mode. See the Developer Mode design document.
- The support date has passed: Developer Mode does not extend the Chromebook’s official automatic-update period. Google also offers extended updates for eligible pre-2021 models, but opting in removes Android apps and Google Play Store access and cannot be reversed. That choice is separate from Developer Mode; see Google’s extended-updates guidance.
Can a work or school Chromebook use Developer Mode?
An administrator can block Developer Mode through enterprise policy. Work or school users may also be unable to reset or re-enroll a managed device themselves. Ask the organization’s administrator before attempting a mode change; Google’s managed ChromeOS wipe guidance covers management and forced re-enrollment.

Do you need Developer Mode for Linux development?
Not necessarily. On supported Chromebooks, Google’s built-in Linux development environment provides a Debian environment through Settings and can support many command-line and coding tasks without enabling Developer Mode. An administrator may restrict it. Follow Google’s Linux setup instructions to check availability on your device.
