The useful exception is a compatible USB-C source sending video and audio to an HDMI display through a USB-C-to-HDMI cable or adapter. That works only when the source device supports video output over USB-C.
Will a USB cable work in an HDMI port?
No. A standard USB cable is not designed to connect to an HDMI port. USB Type-C is a separate connector system with its own specification, as described by the USB Implementers Forum. Do not force a connector into a port; the available guidance does not establish what damage a particular forced connection might cause.

When can USB-C connect to HDMI?
A USB-C-to-HDMI cable or adapter can carry video and audio from a compatible USB-C source—such as a laptop, tablet, or phone—to an HDMI display. The direction is important: it is a USB-C video output going to an HDMI input, not an HDMI port becoming a USB port. HDMI Licensing describes this supported path through HDMI Alt Mode.

Check the source device, not just the connector
A USB-C-shaped port does not guarantee video output. Check the specifications or manufacturer support materials for the exact device and confirm that it supports HDMI Alt Mode or another video output mode supported by the accessory. HDMI Licensing notes that manufacturers choose which HDMI features their USB-C products support.

Choose an accessory for the right direction
For a USB-C source and an HDMI monitor or TV, choose an accessory specifically described as USB-C-to-HDMI output. VESA explains that its adapter path connects USB-C devices supporting DisplayPort over USB-C to HDMI display inputs; see the VESA DisplayPort FAQ. An HDMI-to-USB cable is not an equivalent substitute for this source-to-display connection.
How to choose a cable, adapter, or dock
Once the device is confirmed to support video over USB-C, compare the accessory against the display and how you plan to use it.

- Adapter: A compact USB-C-to-HDMI adapter can provide the same type of output while letting you use a separate HDMI cable.
- Dock: A USB-C dock may support video Alt Modes and can add other connections. VESA distinguishes such docks from USB hubs, which do not support video Alt Modes.
- Display features: Check that the source and accessory support the resolution, refresh rate, and other features you need. The connector alone does not establish those capabilities.
Verify specifications for both the source and accessory before buying. A USB-C cable, port, hub, or dock should not be assumed to carry video simply because it uses USB-C.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf the connection does not produce a picture
- Confirm that the source device supports video output over USB-C; if its specifications do not say so, the port may not provide video.
- Check that the accessory is intended for USB-C video output to HDMI input, rather than the reverse direction.
- Confirm that the accessory supports the display features you want and that the HDMI display is using the connected input.
- If using a hub or dock, check its documentation for explicit video Alt Mode support; a basic USB hub does not provide it.
HDMI Licensing announced HDMI Alt Mode in 2016. At the time, HDMI Licensing president Rob Tobias said consumers expected to connect devices to displays with a USB Type-C-to-HDMI cable. That historical statement describes the intended connection path, not a guarantee that every present-day USB-C device supports video output.
