Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThere is no single diversion for all A47 roadworks. Find the exact affected section, your direction of travel and journey time; check the matching National Highways update and current travel alerts; then follow the diversion signed for that specific closure. Recheck before setting off because planned restrictions can change at short notice.
How to check the right A47 closure
- Pin down your journey. Note the A47 section, direction and approximate travel time. A diversion near Thickthorn may not help with a closure near North Burlingham or farther west.
- Open the relevant National Highways project update. Check the latest dated information for that location, along with current closure details and travel alerts. The Thickthorn project page, Blofield to North Burlingham page and North Tuddenham to Easton page cover different work areas.
- Match the restriction to the notice. Check whether it is a full closure, slip-road closure, overnight lane restriction or local access restriction. Read the diversion for your direction rather than assuming a route applies to every closure.
- Follow signs on the day. Use the signed diversion for the active closure. An older route description or a navigation app’s suggested alternative does not confirm that a road is open.
- Check again shortly before leaving. This is particularly important for overnight travel and dates listed in a project update. Allow time for the official diversion and traffic management.

Thickthorn, near Norwich
National Highways’ update dated 2 October 2026 lists a full westbound A47 closure between the A140 and Thickthorn Junction on Monday 5 October, from 8pm to 6am. It also lists overnight lane closures and traffic management on the Thickthorn roundabout from Tuesday 6 October through Friday 9 October, from 8pm to 6am. The page describes a diversion via Norwich using the A1074 and A140 for specified Thickthorn works; use it only if it matches the closure and direction in the current notice. The same update lists further planned closures later in October for an offshore-wind transformer delivery, including closure of the eastbound entry slip at Thickthorn and other A47 closures. These are separate, time-sensitive events. Check the Thickthorn update before travelling.

The Thickthorn traffic layout is also changing. National Highways says it plans to switch the contraflow in October 2026, with eastbound traffic reduced to one lane through the stated period and westbound traffic returning to two lanes. Check the project page for the current arrangement. Separately, the authority forecasts that the scheme will remove around 12,000 vehicles a day from the roundabout; that is a forecast, not a measured result after completion. Blofield to North Burlingham
An update dated 11 September 2026 describes resurfacing part of the old A47 between Waterlow and the western entrance to North Burlingham, planned from 1 September to 9 October. It says access to North Burlingham is maintained from the eastern end, residents within the closure receive escorted access, and there is no access to the A47 from the north via Dell Corner. As the stated end date is close, check the latest Blofield to North Burlingham update before travelling.
North Tuddenham to Easton
For closures in the North Tuddenham to Easton project area, National Highways gives different instructions for eastbound and westbound traffic, using different links through the A11, A134 and A1065. Those routes apply to the specified project closures; they are not a general-purpose A47 bypass. Check the project page for the applicable direction and current closure information.

Choosing between a signed diversion and another route
The cited project updates do not offer a universal menu of alternative routes. If a current navigation service suggests another way, compare it with the official notice before choosing:
- Does it avoid the exact closed road or junction link?
- Is it open during your travel window?
- Does the official notice designate it for your direction and circumstances?
- Will it preserve any local access you need, particularly where a village road is restricted?
Use current restrictions and on-road signs to guide your decision. National Highways’ Thickthorn update warns: “Please remember that closures can change at short notice.”
