A ferry drydocking takes the vessel out of the water so surveyors can examine its underwater hull and fittings directly. Depending on the ferry and the survey required, the inspection may also cover internal structure, tanks, plate thickness and propulsion components. Findings can lead to closer checks or repairs. The precise scope and schedule depend on the vessel’s type, flag, classification, condition and approvals; there is no single checklist or interval that applies to every ferry.
Why a ferry is drydocked
When a ferry is hauled out or placed in a dry dock or slipway, its underwater surfaces become accessible for examination. For vessels within its scope, U.S. regulation 46 CFR § 115.610 describes examination of accessible underwater parts and through-hull fittings during a drydock examination, including hull plating, appendages and specified fittings. The regulation’s scope and wording apply to relevant U.S. passenger vessels, not automatically to every ferry worldwide.

What happens during the inspection
1. The survey scope is coordinated
The operator, repair yard and attending survey organization coordinate the work against the ferry’s applicable flag-state requirements, classification rules and survey plan. The reviewed rules do not prescribe one universal preparation sequence, so timing, access arrangements and work performed vary by vessel.
2. The vessel is hauled out and supported
The ferry is moved out of the water into a dry dock or onto a slipway, where it is supported to allow access to its bottom and underwater fittings. The exact docking arrangement depends on the vessel and facility.

3. Accessible hull surfaces and fittings are examined
Surveyors examine the underwater hull and relevant fittings for the survey’s scope. The U.S. passenger-vessel regulation lists plating, appendages, propellers, shafts, bearings, rudders, sea chests, valves and strainers among the items that may be made available for examination. Surfaces may need cleaning before they can be examined; ClassNK’s inland-waterway docking rules explicitly describe examining the outer shell after cleaning. That rule is an inland-waterway example, not a universal ferry standard.
4. Internal structure and spaces may be examined
A hull inspection can extend beyond the exterior. The cited U.S. rule describes internal examination of main strength members, major framing and plating, as well as voids and ballast, cargo and fuel-oil tanks. Where parts are concealed, the rule contemplates exposing them so they can be examined. Which spaces and structures are inspected depends on the vessel and applicable survey scope.

5. Thickness measurements or closer checks may follow
Where required, thickness measurements document the remaining thickness of structural material. Under the cited China Classification Society requirements, an approved service supplier performs the measurements, normally under surveyor supervision. This is a controlled survey task, not a do-it-yourself way to certify a ferry’s hull. Suspect or damaged areas may receive additional scrutiny, but the particular tests and any resulting repairs depend on the findings and the applicable rules.

The survey process records the observed condition and identifies any required follow-up. Whether repairs are needed, what work is acceptable and what is required before the ferry returns to service are decisions specific to the vessel and its attending surveyor, class and flag administration.

How the inspection changes with propulsion and survey arrangement
Inspection points vary with the ferry’s configuration. A conventional propeller-driven vessel may have propellers, shafts, bearings and rudders within the relevant examination scope. For waterjet systems covered by its inland-waterway rules, ClassNK gives different examples: checking bearing wear-down, pump-unit mounting and intake ducts. These are configuration-specific examples, not requirements for every ferry.
Classification rules can also provide for an approved continuous hull survey arrangement. ClassNK’s passenger-ship rules describe an arrangement under which certain internal examinations, thickness measurements and pressure tests may be credited over time, subject to approval and surveyor discretion. Defects can prompt further examination. This option does not automatically apply to a particular ferry or replace its flag administration’s requirements.

Why there is no universal drydocking interval
The cited rules do not establish one worldwide interval for ferries. The actual schedule depends on such factors as vessel category, flag, class, age, condition, survey history and approval conditions. The UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency’s MGN 672 (M), revised in August 2025, describes a conditional extended-drydocking program and UK-specific bottom-inspection provisions. Eligibility and exceptions matter; it should not be read as a universal schedule. Class rules, including those published by ClassNK, are separate from flag-state legal requirements.

Drydocking versus an alternative underwater examination
| Consideration | Drydocking | Alternative underwater examination |
|---|---|---|
| Access | The ferry is hauled out in a dry dock or placed on a slipway for access to the underwater hull. | May be permitted only under an applicable, approved arrangement; availability depends on the governing rules and vessel. |
| Scope | Provides direct access to the bottom and fittings; internal examinations and thickness measurements may also be included when required. | Scope and acceptance depend on the approved arrangement and applicable requirements; it is not automatically equivalent to a drydock survey. |
| Authority | Subject to the vessel’s applicable flag requirements, classification rules and survey plan. | Likewise depends on applicable rules and approval; UK guidance and classification rules are examples within defined scopes. |
| Suitability | Planned according to the vessel and its survey requirements. | Eligibility may depend on age, hull-protection arrangements, condition, survey history and approval conditions. |
What an owner or passenger should take from the process
- A drydock examination provides direct access to underwater hull areas that cannot be inspected the same way while the ferry is afloat.
- The inspection may include internal structure, tanks and professional thickness measurements, but the precise scope is vessel-specific.
- Propulsion-related inspection points differ between propeller-driven and waterjet-equipped ferries.
- Inspection intervals, acceptance decisions and return-to-service requirements must be established from the ferry’s governing rules and approvals, not assumed from a generic timetable.
