You generally do not need to cut fruit out if you have diabetes or prediabetes. Fruit contains carbohydrate, so count the portion within your own meal plan. For everyday choices, whole fruit is usually preferable to juice because it retains fiber and is more filling. Dried fruit can fit too, but its small, concentrated portions are easy to overeat.
How to compare fruit forms
| Form | What matters | Example portion with about 15 g carbohydrate |
|---|---|---|
| Whole fruit | Retains fiber, tends to be more filling, and still contributes carbohydrate. | A small piece of fruit or about 1/2 cup frozen or canned fruit, according to the American Diabetes Association (ADA). The ADA’s 2026 consumer article also gives 1 cup of berries or chopped melon as an example. |
| 100% juice | Has less fiber than whole fruit and is easy to drink quickly. It counts as carbohydrate even if it has no added sugar. | About 1/3–1/2 cup, according to ADA fruit guidance; the ADA’s 2026 consumer article gives 1/2 cup. |
| Dried fruit | It is not off-limits, but dehydration makes portions compact. Check both the serving size and carbohydrate amount on the label. | About 2 tablespoons of raisins or dried cherries, according to ADA examples. |
These are practical examples, not personalized prescriptions. Your carbohydrate target and response depend on your own care plan. The ADA recommends fresh, frozen, or canned fruit without added sugar; for canned fruit, look for “packed in its own juices,” “unsweetened,” or “no added sugar.”

Why whole fruit is usually the better routine choice
Whole fruit keeps its fiber, which can slow fructose absorption and help you feel full. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends eating whole fruit instead of drinking juice, which it describes as a simple carbohydrate that can raise blood sugar quickly. Juice is also easy to consume in a larger amount than intended: the CDC notes that about three oranges go into one cup of juice.
That does not make juice forbidden. It means the portion matters, and a glass of juice may deliver carbohydrate faster and with less fullness than eating fruit. The ADA’s 2026 Standards of Care encourage minimally processed, nutrient-dense, high-fiber carbohydrates, including whole fruit, and advise replacing sugar-sweetened beverages, including juices, with water or low- or no-calorie drinks to help manage glycemia and cardiometabolic risk.

How to include juice and dried fruit
Juice
Count 100% juice as carbohydrate, even when it contains no added sugar, and keep the serving modest if you choose it as a routine drink. Diabetes UK advises limiting juice and smoothies to a small 150 ml glass per day and accounting for their carbohydrates. That is Diabetes UK’s UK-oriented consumer recommendation, not a universal clinical limit.
Dried fruit
Use the package serving size and carbohydrate information to judge a portion; a small handful can contain more carbohydrate than it appears to. ADA examples put two tablespoons of raisins or dried cherries at about 15 g of carbohydrate. Dried fruit can be a nutritious option, but its compactness makes portion awareness especially useful.

When juice has a different role
Routine beverage advice is not the same as treating low blood glucose (hypoglycemia). The ADA notes that juice may be used to treat a low. If you have diabetes, follow the treatment steps in your care plan rather than applying general advice to limit juice when you are experiencing a low. If you use insulin or other glucose-lowering medicine, use your clinician’s guidance for your carbohydrate targets and low-glucose treatment.
