Keyboard signal processing is the sensing, encoding, handling, and transmission of key actions so a computer can interpret them. It covers more than the character that appears on screen: a key’s physical state, the keyboard’s representation of that state, the data sent to the computer, and the operating system’s or application’s interpretation are separate stages.
How keyboard signal processing works
A computer keyboard turns a physical action into input that software can use. The exact circuitry and internal design vary by keyboard, but the process can be understood in four layers.

- Physical sensing: Pressing a key changes the electrical state of its switch or other key mechanism. The keyboard detects that change.
- Device-side processing: A controller organizes the detected key state. Depending on the design, it may map the input, generate scan-oriented data, filter signals, or perform other handling. These details are implementation-specific.
- Transport and report format: The keyboard sends a representation of its input to the computer. For USB devices, the Human Interface Device (HID) framework defines descriptors and reports used to describe and convey device data.
- Host and application interpretation: The computer’s software interprets the received data according to its input, keyboard-layout, and application rules. The device’s report is not necessarily a finished character or command.
What USB HID specifies
The USB Implementers Forum’s Device Class Definition for Human Interface Devices (HID), Version 1.11, released on June 27, 2001, includes keyboards among typical HID devices. It describes report descriptors, which characterize the data a device generates, and reports, which carry data such as control states. The specification includes input, output, and feature items; keyboard data can use array fields, and the number of fields declared affects how many simultaneous key states a report can represent. This is the HID framework, not a claim that every keyboard uses the same report layout.

As the specification puts it, “A Report descriptor describes each piece of data that the device generates and what the data is actually measuring.” A descriptor therefore helps the host interpret a device’s report; it is not itself the typed character displayed by an application.

Why scan codes, HID reports, and characters are different
These terms describe different points in the input path. A scan code is a representation associated with key input; a HID report is data exchanged under the HID framework; a character is an outcome software may produce after applying layout and input rules. They should not be used as synonyms. Which representations appear, and where translations occur, depends on the keyboard and its connection path.
Where processing can take place
Processing may occur inside the keyboard controller, in another embedded controller, or in host software. Patent descriptions illustrate possible designs, but do not establish requirements for ordinary keyboards.

- One patent describes a design that scans keys and processes a pointer-rod signal through analog-to-digital conversion, with the different signals handled in time-shared stages. It is an example of scheduled processing in one design, not a universal keyboard architecture.
- Another patent describes an embedded controller mapping simulated key signals to keyboard scan signals for a specialized input path. Its claimed reliability benefit should not be treated as a general result for ordinary keyboards.
Computer keyboards and musical keyboards are not the same topic
Here, “keyboard signal processing” refers to computer-keyboard input. An electronic musical keyboard has a different signal path involving musical events and sound generation; it should not be explained as though it were USB HID keyboard input. The available source for MIDI is a MIDI 1.0 specification landing page, which does not establish specific message formats or sound-processing stages here.
