OpenAI has not confirmed that it is developing a separate, active X-like social network. Reuters reported in April 2025 that the company was exploring one, but the project was described as early-stage. OpenAI later launched the social video app Sora 2, then discontinued Sora’s web and app experiences on April 26, 2026. The available reporting does not establish that Sora was the same project—or that the separate network remains active.
What OpenAI was reported to be developing
On April 15, 2025, Reuters reported, citing The Verge and people familiar with the matter, that OpenAI was working on an X-like social-media network. The account described an early-stage effort, not a publicly announced product or confirmed launch plan.

According to that reporting, an internal prototype paired ChatGPT image generation with a social feed, and Sam Altman was seeking outside feedback. The report did not establish a product name, launch date, business model, expected audience, or final feature set. It also left open whether the idea would become a standalone app or be integrated into ChatGPT.

How Sora 2 fit into the story
On September 30, 2025, OpenAI announced Sora 2 alongside a standalone iOS social app for creating, remixing, and discovering AI-generated videos in a customizable feed. The app was built around OpenAI’s Characters feature. OpenAI wrote, “We think a social app built around this ‘characters’ feature is the best way to experience the magic of Sora 2.”
#1 Best Overall
Sora was a real social video experience, but its launch does not prove it was the same effort described in the April 2025 report. OpenAI’s launch materials presented Sora as a product in its own right; the available sources do not connect it definitively to the earlier prototype.
What OpenAI said about the Sora feed
OpenAI’s feed-philosophy page described a feed designed to encourage creativity and active participation. It said ranking should be steerable, content from followed or connected accounts should be emphasized, and safety controls should be available. OpenAI’s product materials also described creation, remixing, follows, comments, and recommendations.

What happened to the Sora social app
OpenAI’s Help Center and product pages state that the Sora web and app experiences were discontinued on April 26, 2026. That date applies to those Sora experiences; it does not, by itself, establish what happened to the separate X-like idea described in 2025.
Is OpenAI’s social-media project still active?
The sources document the early-stage report, Sora 2’s later social app, and the discontinuation of Sora’s web and app experiences. They do not confirm that a separate X-like OpenAI network continued after the 2025 report. Accordingly, it is not accurate to describe OpenAI as having a currently confirmed, active alternative to X or a confirmed social feed coming to ChatGPT.

If OpenAI announces another social product, the details that would distinguish it include whether it is standalone or part of ChatGPT, whether it centers on images or video, how users connect and follow one another, how recommendations can be controlled, and what protections and moderation apply to identity, likeness, and AI-generated content.
