Seagate’s guidance also specifies USB 3.0, but its capacity figures conflict. One Seagate guide says 128 GB minimum, while Seagate’s setup guidance says 256 GB minimum. Xbox Wire’s 2014 announcement also gave 256 GB. These are requirements stated by those sources, not a single confirmed current threshold. Check the requirement shown by your console, and avoid a drive close to the lower figure.
How to choose a compatible drive
Compare candidates by capacity, connection, portability, and the power and cable requirements of the specific model. Choose enough space for the games and apps you expect to keep installed; a drive with ample capacity also avoids relying on the disputed minimum.

Format the drive for games and apps
- Connect the external drive to a USB port on the Xbox One.
- If the console prompts you to configure it, choose the option for Games and Apps. This format is required to play and save games on the drive, according to Seagate’s Xbox One formatting guidance.
- If you need to start setup through the settings menu, Seagate gives the path Settings > System > Manage Storage. Menu wording can vary by console software version.
- Read the confirmation carefully and proceed only after backing up anything you need from the drive. Formatting erases its existing contents.
- After formatting, select the external drive as a storage location for games and apps. Seagate says Xbox One games can run directly from an external drive once it is set up.
Games and Apps storage is not media-file storage
The console’s Games and Apps format is for installing and using games and apps. If you intend to keep files for media use instead, pay attention to the console’s setup choices and select the use that matches your purpose. Do not accept a formatting prompt until you understand what it will erase and how the drive will be used.

Xbox One USB drives are not Series X|S expansion cards
This USB-drive guidance applies to Xbox One, Xbox One S, and Xbox One X.
