Grand Theft Auto V does not offer a documented switch that turns its authored Story Mode mature content on or off. Rockstar’s documented in-game Settings menu is for controls, audio, camera and display. Separate privacy and user-generated-content (UGC) controls can limit profile information or access to player-created material, but they are not filters for the game’s built-in scenes, dialogue, nudity, violence or drug references.
That distinction matters if you are configuring the game for a younger household member, deciding whether to buy it, or trying to stop unwanted material in GTA Online. The steps below show what each control layer actually changes and where its limits are.

What GTA 5’s Settings menu actually controls
Rockstar says, “The settings for GTAV can be changed within the Pause Menu when in Story Mode or Online.” The support page, last updated April 20, 2024, points to categories such as controls, audio, camera and display. In practice, these are presentation and input choices: how the game responds to a controller or keyboard, how loud different sounds are, how the camera behaves, and how the image is displayed.
To reach them:
- Start GTA V and enter either Story Mode or GTA Online.
- Open the Pause Menu using your platform’s pause/menu button.
- Select Settings.
- Choose the category you need, such as controls, audio, camera or display, then adjust the available options and apply the change.
Rockstar uses “like” when naming those categories, so the support article is an example of the menu rather than a complete inventory for every console, PC build or update. Menu labels and the number of options can therefore vary by platform and version. The important point is that the documented menu concerns how the game is played and presented; Rockstar’s page does not describe a Story Mode mature-content filter. That omission is not proof that every build has exactly the same menu, but it means you should not assume a hidden toggle can sanitize the campaign.
#1 Best Overall
- STUNNING VISUALS — Enhanced levels of fidelity and performance with new graphics modes featuring up to 4K resolution, up to 60 frames per second, HDR options, ray tracing, improved texture quality, and more
- FASTER LOADING — Quicker access to the action as the world of Los Santos and Blaine County load in faster than ever before.
- ADAPTIVE TRIGGERS AND HAPTIC FEEDBACK — Feel every moment through the DualSense controller, from directional damage to weather effects, rough road surfaces to explosions, and more.
- TEMPEST 3D AUDIO — Hear the sounds of the world with pinpoint precision: the throttle of a stolen supercar, the rattle of neighbouring gunfire, the roar of a helicopter overhead, and more.
- Please note that although this game is Region Free or Region Unlocked and will work on all systems, this is the European version and may differ from the local version in age rating, labeling or instructions.
Can you turn off violence, language, nudity or sexual content?
No documented Rockstar setting lets you remove the mature material authored into Story Mode. You can change camera behavior, volume, controls and display presentation, but those changes do not rewrite missions, cutscenes, radio, television programs or character dialogue.
Rockstar’s support documentation does not promise a violence, language, nudity, sexual-content or drug-use filter. Because the page is not an exhaustive menu list, the precise claim is: Rockstar does not document such a filter in the cited GTAV settings guidance. It is not safe to tell a parent that switching a setting will make Story Mode appropriate for a younger player, and it is equally unsafe to claim that every platform’s complete menu has been independently ruled out.
Muting audio illustrates the difference. Lowering dialogue or radio volume may make words harder to hear, but it does not remove the scenes or change their content. Disabling a camera effect may alter the viewpoint, not the events being shown. Those are accessibility or presentation adjustments, not content moderation.

The Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) rates Grand Theft Auto V M for Mature 17+. Its listed descriptors are:
Rank #2
- Experience the world of Grand Theft Auto V like never before with the power of the PlayStation 4.
- Explore the City of Los Santos, the countryside and even the ocean.
- Play through an epic single player experience using three very different characters.
- Join your friends in GTA Online and see what trouble you can cause.
- Play golf, tennis, see a film or call someone and just hang out.
| Descriptor | ESRB context |
|---|---|
| Blood and Gore | Graphic injury effects and blood are part of the game’s action. |
| Intense Violence | Missions and combat include sustained violent action. |
| Mature Humor | Some cutscenes, television programs and radio advertisements contain mature jokes and themes. |
| Nudity | The ESRB summary identifies a topless lap dance in a strip club and a location where male cult members’ genitals are exposed in a non-sexual context. |
| Strong Language | Profanity appears in dialogue and other authored audio. |
| Strong Sexual Content | Sexual references and situations are included in the game. |
| Use of Drugs and Alcohol | Drug and alcohol use is depicted or referenced. |
The “17+” label is an age category, not a guarantee that every 17-year-old is ready for the material and not a list of switches you can toggle. The full rating summary is available from the ESRB rating record. A store listing may show the same mature-content descriptors; buying a different platform edition does not, by itself, add a content-filter feature.
Privacy settings are not Story Mode content controls
Rockstar documents privacy and UGC controls separately from the Pause Menu settings. These options govern what other people can see about your account and how you interact with player-created material. They do not edit Rockstar-authored missions or scenes.
According to Rockstar’s privacy guidance, you can limit selected areas such as:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Your Profile Page and profile information.
- My Wall activity.
- Single Player and Profile Page game statistics.
Those limits are selective, not a complete invisibility switch. Rockstar says some information remains visible, including Crew membership, comments you make on another user’s wall and multiplayer data. If another player is blocked, that player can still view or comment on UGC, according to the same guidance. Blocking is therefore a communication or account-management action, not a way to hide every item associated with your activity.

GTA Online UGC access on the Xbox app for PC
GTA Online has a separate issue: jobs, crews and other community creations can be restricted by platform privacy settings. Rockstar specifically documents the Xbox app for PC, including Game Pass, and says access depends on correctly configured UGC settings as well as Xbox privacy and online-safety settings.
If Jobs or Crews are unavailable in that setup, check the following path:

- Find You can see and upload community creations.
- Set that permission to Everyone if the account is allowed to access community creations.
- Save the change, restart the Xbox app or game if necessary, and try the Job or Crew again.
Rockstar’s instructions are specifically about access to UGC. They do not say that enabling or disabling this permission changes Story Mode’s violence, language, nudity, sexual content or drug references. A restriction here can explain why an online Job or Crew is missing without implying that the campaign has been filtered.

Reporting offensive player-created content
GTA Online includes a reporting route for abusive communication and offensive player-created material. Rockstar lists report categories that include violent or gory content and adult nudity or sexual content. Use reporting when the problem is another player’s behavior or UGC that violates the service rules.
Reporting does not remove mature scenes written and produced for GTA V’s Story Mode. It also is not a personal content filter: it sends a moderation complaint for review. The available categories and instructions are in Rockstar’s reporting guide, last updated December 5, 2025.
Control layers compared
| Control layer | What it can affect | What it cannot be assumed to affect |
|---|---|---|
| In-game Settings menu | Controls, audio, camera and display options reachable from the Pause Menu in Story Mode or Online. | A documented filter for authored mature scenes; Rockstar’s cited page does not describe one. |
| Rockstar privacy settings | Selected profile information, wall activity and certain game statistics. | Story Mode scenes, all multiplayer information or every comment and UGC interaction. |
| Xbox privacy and UGC settings | Whether an Xbox app for PC account can access community creations such as Jobs or Crews. | The content of Rockstar-authored missions, dialogue, cutscenes or radio. |
| Reporting tools | Submissions about abusive communication or offensive player-created content for moderation. | A local filter that edits or suppresses Story Mode’s built-in mature content. |
| ESRB rating | A public age category and content descriptors to help you decide whether to play or buy. | An in-game toggle or a guarantee that the game is suitable for a particular individual. |
How to configure the game for a household
If your concern is Story Mode
Read the ESRB descriptors and summary before allowing access. Then preview the game’s mature themes through the rating information rather than relying on an in-game setting. You can still adjust audio, camera, controls and display for comfort or accessibility, but treat those as usability changes. Do not promise that they remove scenes or profanity.

If your concern is another player’s profile or comments
Review Rockstar privacy settings for profile visibility, wall activity and statistics. Remember that Crew membership, comments on another user’s wall and multiplayer data may remain visible, and blocking does not stop the blocked player from viewing or commenting on UGC under Rockstar’s stated rules.
If your concern is community creations on PC
For the Xbox app on PC, check the permission named You can see and upload community creations and the related online-safety controls. Restricting that permission can affect Jobs and Crews, but it will not sanitize Story Mode.
If your concern is offensive UGC
Use the in-game or service reporting path for the relevant player-created material. Capture enough context to select the correct category, then understand that moderation and filtering are different functions: a report asks Rockstar to review content, while a filter would prevent you from seeing it.

Common misunderstandings and fixes
- “The Mature rating must mean there is a Mature switch.” The ESRB label describes the content; it is not a menu control. Check the rating summary instead.
- “Privacy settings hide my entire account.” Rockstar identifies specific fields that can be limited and separate information that remains visible. Configure each available field rather than expecting total anonymity.
- “Blocking a player removes their UGC from my account.” Rockstar says blocking does not stop that player from viewing or commenting on UGC. Use reporting for rule-breaking content and adjust privacy controls for visibility where available.
- “UGC permissions control the campaign.” Xbox UGC permissions explain access to Jobs, Crews and community creations. They do not alter authored Story Mode material.
- “A missing Job proves the game is censored.” On the Xbox app for PC, privacy and online-safety permissions can prevent UGC access. Check those settings before troubleshooting the game installation.
- “The support page lists every option.” Rockstar’s wording gives examples such as controls, audio, camera and display. Platform and version differences are possible, so treat the documentation as guidance rather than a universal menu map.
Bottom line for buyers and players
Use GTA V’s Pause Menu Settings to change how the game looks, sounds and responds. Use Rockstar privacy controls to manage selected account information, Xbox permissions to manage access to community creations, and reporting tools to flag offensive UGC. None of those documented layers should be presented as a guaranteed way to remove the mature content authored into Story Mode. The reliable way to judge that material is the ESRB’s M for Mature 17+ rating and its detailed descriptors, checked against the player’s age and circumstances.
