SynthID can help identify content that carries a watermark applied by a Google AI system or another system using the technology. A positive result is evidence about a watermark, not proof of who made or shared the content, whether it is truthful, or whether every part of a file was AI-generated. A result that does not detect SynthID does not prove human authorship: it only means the check did not find the signal it looks for.
What SynthID is and how it works
SynthID is Google DeepMind’s family of watermarking and detection technologies for AI-generated images, audio, text, and video. The watermark is added during generation and is designed to be imperceptible to people while remaining detectable by compatible technology. It is a check for a particular watermark, not a universal test for AI authorship. Google DeepMind’s SynthID overview

Google says its image and video watermark is designed to withstand changes such as cropping, filters, frame-rate changes, and lossy compression. Its audio watermark is intended to remain detectable after common changes such as added noise, MP3 compression, or speed changes. Those are design goals, not a guarantee that a signal will survive every edit or that every detector will find it.

For text, SynthID is integrated into token generation. A language model assigns probabilities to possible next tokens; SynthID subtly adjusts those probabilities to create a pattern that a detector can compare with expected watermarked and unwatermarked patterns. The mark is not visible in the text. Google’s SynthID Text developer documentation

Google’s developer documentation also provides an open-source, production-grade implementation in Hugging Face Transformers v4.46.0 and later, along with a reference implementation. That is a developer option, not a guarantee that every model or third-party detector uses Google’s watermark configuration.
How to check content with Google’s tools
Google’s product overview describes uploading an image, video, or audio clip to Gemini and asking whether Google AI created or altered it. The response can provide context about the content and may identify relevant segments. Google also describes a separate SynthID Detector portal and says it is collaborating with journalists and media professionals to test it; that description does not establish general public access to the portal. In a May 19, 2026 announcement, Google said SynthID verification for images, video, and audio had been added to Gemini and that it had been used 50 million times globally. The same announcement said verification was expanding to Search immediately and Chrome over the following weeks. Those rollout details are time-bound; check Google’s current product information to confirm what is available in your region and account. Google’s May 19, 2026 announcement

What a positive or negative result means
| Result | What it supports | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| SynthID detected | The detector found a SynthID signal in all or part of the submitted item. This supports a limited provenance claim tied to a system that used SynthID. | It does not identify the person who created, edited, or shared the content; establish that the whole file was AI-generated; or say whether the content is true, misleading, harmless, or malicious. |
| SynthID not detected | The check did not find the SynthID signal it looks for. | It does not prove the content is human-made, authentic, or free of AI involvement. The item may come from a system that does not use SynthID, or a watermark may no longer be detectable after changes. |
A marked section does not make every pixel, word, or second in a mixed or edited file AI-generated. Google says its Detector can highlight portions more likely to contain a watermark, and Gemini may provide context about segments. Treat a positive result as evidence about the indicated portion, not a verdict on the entire item. Google’s May 20, 2025 announcement
Google’s May 2026 announcement names OpenAI, Kakao, and ElevenLabs as organizations bringing SynthID technology to more of their AI-generated content. This indicates expanding adoption, but does not mean all output from those companies or all their models carries a SynthID watermark. Google also announced a broader AI Content Detection API on the Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform for organizations evaluating content from Google and other popular models. That API should not be confused with a SynthID-only check in Gemini. Google’s May 19, 2026 announcement
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why text results need extra caution
SynthID Text is probabilistic, and Google’s developer documentation describes three possible detector states: watermarked, not watermarked, and uncertain. Thresholds can be adjusted, changing the balance between false positives and false negatives. A result is therefore not certainty independent of the detector’s configuration. - Short or factual answers: The watermark works best with longer, varied responses. It is less effective for factual answers because the model has fewer opportunities to adjust token probabilities without risking accuracy.
- Rewriting or translation: A thorough rewrite or translation into another language can substantially reduce detector confidence. Google says small changes, such as altering a few words or mild paraphrasing, can retain robustness, but that is not assured for every sample.
- Uncertain results: Treat the detector’s uncertainty state as a meaningful limit, not as a positive or negative verdict.
Google’s technical explanation puts the limitation plainly: “SynthID isn’t a silver bullet for identifying AI generated content.” Google DeepMind’s SynthID text and video announcement

SynthID’s scale—and what those numbers mean
Google’s reported figures describe deployment, not independent tests of detector accuracy. They do not show how often SynthID correctly identifies content across different models, file types, or transformations.
| Google-reported figure | Date and scope |
|---|---|
| Over 100 billion images and videos, and 60,000 years of audio watermarked | Reported by Google in May 2026; company-reported deployment totals. Source |
| 50 million SynthID verification uses in Gemini globally | Reported by Google as of May 19, 2026. Source |
| Over 10 billion pieces of content watermarked | Reported by Google in May 2025, before the later modality-specific totals. Source |
How SynthID differs from other provenance checks
Not every “is this AI?” tool checks the same thing. SynthID searches for a watermark; Content Credentials are provenance metadata; visible disclosures depend on someone labeling the content; and AI classifiers infer likely origin from content characteristics. These approaches are not interchangeable. When evaluating a result, ask what signal the tool checks, which media types it supports, whether it can identify a partial segment, what kinds of edits may weaken the evidence, and whether the tool is available to you or limited to testers or an API. Google discusses SynthID alongside Content Credentials and broader detection services in its product information. Google DeepMind’s SynthID overview
