Google Photos Face Groups can estimate whether faces in different photos are likely to show the same person, then collect those photos into a group. It does not verify that person’s real-world identity: you supply the group’s name or nickname. Treat a group as a useful, fallible way to organize your library—not as proof of who someone is.
Does Google Photos recognize who someone is?
No—not in the sense of confirming a person’s identity against an official record. Google describes Face Groups as a feature that compares faces and estimates whether images show the same person. You can then add a name or nickname to a group and search your library using that label. The label comes from you; Google’s documentation does not say the feature independently discovers or verifies a person’s name. Google Photos Help explains how face groups work.

| Task | What it means |
|---|---|
| Face matching and grouping | Estimates whether face images in different photos are likely to show the same person. |
| Identity verification | Establishes who someone is against an external identity record. Google’s Face Groups documentation does not claim to do this. |
| Group labeling | Lets you assign a name or nickname to a group and search for it by that label. |
How Face Groups builds a group
Google describes a process that starts by detecting whether a photo contains a face. When Face Groups is on, algorithms create numerical face models, estimate similarities among face images, and put very similar faces that are likely to belong to the same person into a group. Google says you can remove photos that were grouped incorrectly.
Not every image in a group necessarily shows a clearly visible face. Google says it may also use contextual clues, such as photos taken close together in time or clothing that appears the same, when grouping items.

Why a group can be wrong
Google warns that “Face group suggestions aren’t perfect.” A group is therefore a suggestion about likely similarity, not a guaranteed record that every image shows one person. Google’s documentation does not provide an accuracy rate or confidence threshold, so there is no supported percentage that describes how often it gets a match right.
Google Photos provides ways to review and correct suggestions: you can indicate that groups are the same, different, or uncertain; merge groups; change a label; and add, remove, or change a photo’s face label. Review groups before merging: Google says a merge cannot be undone. Removing a photo from a group changes its membership; it does not delete that image from your library.

These controls make Face Groups useful for organizing personal photos, but the available documentation does not establish it as suitable for identity verification, security decisions, or surveillance. Google’s Safety Center says, “We do not make general purpose facial recognition technology commercially available.” That is Google’s statement about its own commercial availability, not a claim about every possible use of Photos data.
Privacy, sharing, and what happens when you turn it off
Google says face groups and their labels are visible only to you by default, are not shared when you share photos, and remain private to your account. Google also says enabling Face Groups means you are asking it to make face models; those models may be considered biometric data in some jurisdictions. That qualification is not a legal determination for every location. See Google Photos’ Face Groups retention policy.
- Turn Face Groups off: Google says this deletes your face groups, the face models used to create them, and their labels.
- Delete an individual photo or video: Google says it deletes face models derived specifically from that item.
- Leave Google Photos inactive: Google’s retention policy says Face Groups content is deleted if the account is inactive on Google Photos for more than two years.
Where to find the controls—and why the feature may be missing
On the web, Google’s instructions direct you to Photos settings and the “Group similar faces” section. From there, documented controls include turning Face Groups on or off, disabling grouping pets with people, naming or renaming a group, merging groups, and changing which photos belong to one. Mobile navigation can differ by platform, so the precise path may not match the web instructions.
Face Groups is not available for every geographic region, domain, or account type. If you do not see “People & pets,” Google lists possible explanations including regional availability, Face Groups being off, or no groups having been created yet.
