1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsNeither EQ nor crossover has to come first in every system. Choose the order based on the processor’s routing and whether your EQ target should include the crossover filters. A documented miniDSP DDRC-24 workflow supports both “crossover then EQ” and “EQ then crossover,” with EQ first offering flexibility if crossover frequencies may change later.
What EQ and a crossover do
Crossover: divide and route frequency ranges
A crossover separates audio into frequency bands and sends them to appropriate drivers. In a two-way speaker, for example, a low-pass filter can limit the woofer’s upper range while a high-pass filter limits low frequencies sent to the tweeter. In a subwoofer system, high-pass filtering may limit low frequencies sent to the main speakers while low-pass filtering routes bass to the subwoofer. Filtering can also limit low-frequency energy reaching a speaker or subwoofer to help protect it from over-excursion. miniDSP’s Flex manual explains crossover routing and filtering.

EQ: change the level of selected frequencies
EQ adjusts the level of selected frequency ranges. When EQ and crossover are both active, their order affects the signal presented to the later block. In the DDRC-24 AutoEQ guidance, the target can be set to account for crossover filters already in the chain, or EQ can be created against a target before those filters are enabled. The DDRC-24 manual describes both workflows.
How to choose the order
| Sequence | When it may fit | What to account for |
|---|---|---|
| Crossover then EQ | When EQ should be designed with the crossover filters already active. | Configure the EQ target to match those filters. This workflow is documented for the DDRC-24 AutoEQ; other processors may route or configure filters differently. |
| EQ then crossover | When crossover frequencies may change after EQ and you want to avoid rerunning AutoEQ solely because of that change. | The DDRC-24 guide describes this flexibility in its workflow, typically with EQ made to a flat target. Check whether your processor behaves the same way. |
These are alternatives, not a universal ranking. Before choosing, check where your processor places each filter, whether your target includes or excludes crossover filtering, and whether crossover settings are likely to change. The DDRC-24 guidance documents the target and crossover-change considerations, but does not establish one order for every processor or correction goal.

- Ideal for custom car audio systems, active speaker setups and OEM upgrades with professional DSP tuning in one compact processor.
For a subwoofer, assess the combined system
When integrating a subwoofer, do not judge its EQ in isolation. Check the response around the crossover region and measure the combined output of the main speakers and subwoofer at the listening position. That reveals how the two sources work together where their frequency ranges meet. miniDSP’s 2.1 integration guide describes subwoofer EQ around the crossover and measuring the combined response.
Active DSP versus a passive speaker crossover
An active crossover in a configurable DSP is part of the electronic signal chain and may be adjustable. A passive crossover is typically inside the loudspeaker and is not ordinarily an external setting for the listener to rearrange. Shure’s technical guide describes a passive crossover as typically the final processor before the loudspeaker. See Shure’s guide to audio signal processors.

Some DSP processors provide configurable crossover controls, filter types, slopes, and output-channel routing; those features are an implementation option, not a requirement for every audio system. For example, the miniDSP Flex manual documents independent output-channel crossover controls and configurable filters.
What settings can—and cannot—be decided here
The correct frequency, slope, phase, and EQ settings depend on the speakers, subwoofer, processor, routing, and measurements for the system. The documented workflows explain how order affects setup; they do not prescribe settings for an unspecified system or show that one sequence always sounds better. EQ also cannot be assumed to correct every measured dip: room interactions, phase, overlap, and routing can affect the result.
