What “Getting things ready” tells you during a Windows update

“Getting things ready” is update-related wording, not a precise report of every task Windows is performing or how long the process should take.

“Getting things ready” is update-screen wording: Microsoft documents it as the newer version of “Getting Windows ready.” The message signals an update-related preparation experience, but it does not identify a specific task, prove that Windows is stuck, or reveal how long the process will take.

Why Windows says “Getting things ready”

Microsoft lists “Getting Windows ready” → “Getting things ready” as an example of revised update-message wording in its Windows IoT Enterprise update experience guidance. The wording points to update-related preparation, but it is not a detailed status report of every operation happening on the computer.

Microsoft says the wording changes began with Windows fall 2021 releases. The update messages removed references such as “Windows,” “computer” and “PC” to keep the experience focused on the fixed-purpose device.

What the screen does—and does not—tell you

What Microsoft documents

In the documented Windows IoT Enterprise scenario, the Windows Update service can run in the background while its user-interface experience is hidden. That helps explain why update activity and the text a user sees are not necessarily a one-to-one description of the work taking place.

What you cannot infer from the phrase

  • The message alone does not specify which update task is underway.
  • It does not establish that the computer is frozen or malfunctioning.
  • It does not provide a universal wait time or a threshold for deciding that the screen is stuck.

How broadly this explanation applies

Microsoft’s guidance covers Windows 10 and Windows 11 IoT Enterprise, editions intended for fixed-purpose devices. It documents the wording change and update experience in that context; it is not a full account of the internal setup sequence on every consumer Windows PC. The same message may appear in a broader Windows update experience, but the cited documentation does not establish exactly what every consumer device is doing when it appears.

For the documented wording and scope, see Microsoft’s Manage Update Experience page, last updated June 24, 2026.
