With the right devices and integrations, it can react to someone sitting still, a change in indoor air, water on a floor, a vibration, a nearby lightning strike, or a shifting power draw. These six ideas are practical ways to make a home feel more responsive—not a promise of a fully autonomous house.
1. How can Home Assistant tell if someone is still in a room?
Millimeter-wave (mmWave) presence sensing is designed to detect a person who remains relatively still, unlike a motion sensor that depends on movement. Some devices also expose room zones, so an automation can respond to presence in one part of a room rather than treating the whole space as a single area.

Aqara says its FP2 is a wired sensor with coverage of up to 40 m² and that it exposes zone and presence data to third-party ecosystems, including Home Assistant. Those are manufacturer claims, not independent performance results. Check the current Aqara FP2 product information and Home Assistant’s Aqara integration page for the exact model and supported setup before planning a zone-based automation.

That can provide several signals from one installation, but the project description does not establish universal availability, comparative accuracy, or a setup that requires no configuration. See the Everything Presence One project for its integration details.

2. Can Home Assistant respond to indoor air quality?
Yes, if an integration supplies pollutant readings. Home Assistant’s Air quality integration is a software building block, not a sensor users can add by itself. It provides triggers and conditions for entities from other integrations, which may report PM2.5, PM10, CO2, CO, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), ozone, nitrogen dioxide, or gas and smoke detection. A supported reading could trigger a notification or a purifier automation, for example.
Do not assume one device reports every pollutant, or treat a sensor reading as a medical diagnosis. Confirm which entities the chosen hardware and integration actually provide in the Home Assistant Air quality integration documentation.
3. Can Home Assistant detect a leak under the sink—or dry soil in a plant pot?
Moisture sensing covers two different jobs: detecting water on a surface or in material, and measuring soil moisture numerically. A binary wet/dry leak sensor placed beneath a sink could trigger an alert when water is detected. A soil-moisture sensor could instead support a reminder when a plant’s pot is dry.

- Compatible with other Zigbee Ecosystems Easily integrates with Home Assistant via SONOFF Zigbee Dongles and works with Alexa and SmartThings through compatible Zigbee hubs.
Home Assistant’s moisture documentation describes both binary leak detection and numerical soil-moisture readings. It explains the entity types and automation triggers, but does not establish how accurate any particular probe is. See the Moisture integration documentation before choosing hardware and deciding what action a reading should trigger.
4. How do I get an alert when something vibrates?
A vibration sensor attached to an object can provide a signal when it is shaken or disturbed. That could prompt a notification when a door, cabinet, or other monitored item moves unexpectedly. Home Assistant’s Vibration integration supplies triggers and conditions for binary vibration entities; a compatible device and its integration must supply the actual reading.
Whether a particular setup detects the events you care about depends on its hardware, placement, and integration. A vibration alert is not, by itself, a security guarantee. The Vibration integration documentation describes the automation category.

5. Can a Home Assistant weather station show lightning distance?
Some supported weather integrations expose lightning strikes and an estimated distance to a storm. WeatherFlow documents lightning strike data and estimated distance; Ecowitt lists lightning count and distance as well as rain and soil moisture among its supported sensor data. With the required hardware and integration, these readings can feed a dashboard or notification.

Home Assistant’s Power integration is intended for automations that react to a current load. If suitable metering reports a washing machine’s power draw, an automation could use a chosen threshold or change in load as a possible finished-cycle signal. That depends on the meter and the threshold: a power change alone is not proof that a cycle has ended.

Power readings describe a current load; energy tracking describes accumulated use. Home Assistant’s Energy dashboard is for tracking energy rather than serving as a substitute for a live power signal. Consult the Power integration documentation and Energy dashboard documentation when deciding which data your automation needs.
How should you choose a sensor idea?
Start with the event you want Home Assistant to detect, then check how that data reaches the system and what happens if it is wrong. A false or missed reading matters more for a leak alert than for a decorative dashboard.
- Match the measurement to the task: still presence, a pollutant reading, surface or soil moisture, vibration, weather data, or a live power load are different signals.
- Check the complete compatibility path: a Home Assistant integration may provide automation logic while a separate device supplies the readings. Product-level claims about ecosystem support do not establish that every model or regional variant works the same way.
- Account for installation: consider wiring, placement, hubs, networking, and whether the device needs a particular integration or configuration.
- Choose a proportionate response: use a reading to inform an automation, not as a guarantee of safety, security, health, or appliance status.
Home Assistant’s broader sensor documentation covers device classes beyond the familiar motion and temperature examples. The best choice is the reading that answers a real question in your home—not the sensor with the most futuristic name.
