Gemini in Chrome does not automatically get access to every page you have open. On desktop, Google says it uses the current tab by default; you choose whether to share up to 10 additional open tabs. You can remove a shared tab or turn off default sharing of the current tab.
That distinction matters: asking Gemini about selected page content is different from letting its separate auto browse feature interact with websites. Google’s documentation explains how tab sharing works, but does not establish how well it performs in any particular person’s week of browsing. The practical guide below sticks to the documented behavior and the controls you can check for yourself.

Can Gemini read my open tabs in Chrome?
On desktop, Gemini in Chrome uses content from the current tab by default when answering. To include other pages, you select them; Google says you can add up to 10 recent open tabs across browser windows. A shared tab is marked in the interface. What you can ask about shared pages
Google gives examples such as summarizing an article’s takeaways, explaining a complex topic, comparing information across pages, and making recommendations based on preferences. Those are examples of intended uses, not a guarantee that every answer will be complete or correct. Check important details against the pages themselves.

What happens when I let Gemini use my tabs?
Gemini can use the content of the tab or tabs you have shared as context for its response. For a single-page question, the current tab may be enough. A comparison across pages requires sharing the relevant additional tabs. You choose those tabs rather than granting blanket access to all pages in the browser.
Google’s help page describes the tab-sharing controls, but it does not establish how a particular user’s prompts, browsing habits, or answers will turn out. Treat the feature as a way to ask questions about selected page content, and verify any answer you plan to rely on.

How to choose tabs and stop sharing them
- Open Gemini in Chrome on your desktop and start a chat. The current tab is shared by default unless you have changed the default-sharing setting.
- Use the tab-sharing controls to select any additional recent open tabs you want Gemini to use. You can select up to 10 additional tabs across browser windows.
- Check the interface for the shared-tab marker so you can see which pages are included as context.
- Remove a shared tab using the tab-sharing controls when you no longer want it included. To avoid automatically sharing the current tab in new chats, change the “Share current tab by default” setting.
Google documents the ability to remove shared tabs and change the default. Consult its current Chrome instructions for the controls shown in your version.

Finding a page in Chrome history
Google also documents a separate feature for searching synced Chrome history to help find a previously visited page. It requires opting in, a current Chrome version, a personal Google Account, and synced history; it is unavailable in Incognito mode. It searches for a past page rather than simply using the open tabs you selected. See Google’s Chrome history instructions.
Auto browse
Auto browse is a distinct feature intended for multi-step tasks, such as researching products or arranging travel. It can interact with websites, including sites where you are signed in. Google warns that it may use personal information and may share that information with a website during a task. That is broader than asking a question about the content of selected tabs; review the separate auto browse guidance before using it.

Who can use Gemini in Chrome?
Google describes desktop availability as dependent on eligibility and a gradual rollout. Its stated requirements include opting in, meeting the age requirement, being in a supported region, using a Chromebook Plus, Mac, or Windows computer with an up-to-date Chrome version, signing in, and using a supported device language. A work or school account may also need an administrator to enable access. Because rollout and eligibility can vary, check Chrome and Google’s current availability and setup guidance rather than assuming the feature is available for every account or location.
