What Full Disk Access Lets Mac Apps See on a Mac—and Why It Matters

Full Disk Access can expose broad file access to a Mac app, including data from other apps and Time Machine backups. Here’s what the permission does—and doesn’t prove—and how to manage it.

Full Disk Access lets an app access files across your Mac, including data from other apps such as Mail, Messages, Safari and Home, Time Machine backup data, and certain administrative settings for all users. That describes what macOS permits—not proof that an app actually reads, copies, uploads or misuses any of that data.

What does Full Disk Access let an app see?

Apple describes Full Disk Access as allowing apps to access all files on your computer. Its examples include data belonging to other apps, Time Machine backup data, and certain administrative settings for every user on the Mac. The permission is broad because it can make data available beyond the files a person would ordinarily select through a particular app.

This is an access opportunity, not a report of an app’s behavior. A grant does not establish that the app has examined every accessible file, transmitted anything, or used the data in a particular way. Apple’s description defines the permission’s scope, not what an individual developer does with it. See Apple’s Change Privacy & Security settings on Mac.

How Full Disk Access differs from other permissions

macOS lists Full Disk Access separately from permissions that expose particular locations or capabilities. A prompt for one permission is not a request for every kind of access.

Screen & System Audio Recording Allows an app to record the screen and system audio. System Settings > Privacy & Security. Apple’s Mac Help guide.
FileVault Encrypts the startup volume; it protects the volume from unauthorized access without valid credentials or a recovery key, including if the storage device is connected to another computer. Apple’s Controlling app access to files in macOS.
System Integrity Protection (SIP) Restricts root and limits changes to protected parts of macOS, such as system directories and built-in apps. Apple’s About System Integrity Protection on your Mac.

Full Disk Access does not turn off FileVault or grant ordinary apps permission to rewrite protected macOS system files. FileVault protects an encrypted volume; SIP restricts changes to protected operating-system areas. They address different risks from an app’s access to files on a running Mac. Apple also describes sandboxing and protected data areas as parts of macOS app security in its App security overview.

Should you give an app Full Disk Access?

Decide based on the app and the task, rather than treating the prompt as routine. An app whose stated purpose is to search, index, scan or back up data across the Mac may plausibly need broad file access. If the reason is unclear, check the app’s documentation or ask its developer what the permission enables and why the task needs it.

macOS has required apps needing full storage-device access to be explicitly added in privacy settings since macOS 10.13. Apple separately describes consent controls for locations such as Desktop, Documents, Downloads, iCloud Drive and network volumes on macOS 10.15 and later; those location controls are not the same as Full Disk Access. These version details are documented in Apple’s security guide.

  3. Select Full Disk Access in the privacy permissions list.
  4. Review the listed apps and change the access setting for an app whose grant you no longer want.

Apple documents the controls for reviewing and changing app access in Change Privacy & Security settings on Mac and Control what you share on Mac. Revoking a grant changes the app’s access going forward; it does not establish that copies previously made or information already sent have been erased.
