It means the assistant can observe and operate an interface, while its actual reach depends on the tools, accounts, files, permissions, and runtime environment it has been given. Broader access can make cross-app tasks possible, but it also gives mistakes or maliciously redirected actions more ways to affect real data. The safer default is narrowly scoped access, preferably in an isolated environment, with human review before consequential actions.
What “full computer access” means
Computer-use agents can interpret screenshots and operate a graphical interface with actions such as clicking, scrolling, typing, and navigating websites. OpenAI describes this approach as using a virtual mouse and keyboard rather than relying only on application-specific APIs in its January 23, 2025 Computer-Using Agent announcement. A typical interaction loop is: capture the screen, propose an action, execute it, and inspect a new screen.

That does not, by itself, prove that an agent has unrestricted access to the computer’s operating system. A screen-control tool may be confined to a virtual machine, a browser, or a particular desktop session; a separate tool may or may not permit file access or other operations. Anthropic’s April 9, 2026 overview of trustworthy agents usefully separates the model, its harness or guardrails, its tools, and its environment. The tools and environment determine what applications and data are reachable; the harness shapes instructions and action controls. The same model can therefore have very different exposure in different deployments.

What risks come with broader access?
Prompt injection from pages and documents
A page, document, or other content the assistant encounters can contain instructions intended to make it act against the user’s request. This is prompt injection: hostile or confusing text is presented as content, but attempts to influence the agent as if it were an instruction. OpenAI describes it as an evolving security challenge in its prompt-injection overview; Microsoft also warns that instructions encountered in desktop and web environments can lead to unintended commands in its computer-use guidance.
Text found on a screen is not authority from the user and should not grant the assistant new permissions or override the task. But defenses are layered, and vendor-described checks do not establish that every attack will be prevented. The risk is especially relevant when an agent reads external content and can also click, type, or submit information.

Misread screens and consequential mistakes
An agent can misunderstand an ambiguous request, misread a control, act on a changed screen, or fail to notice that an action had an unexpected result. OpenAI’s Operator discussion gives examples such as a typo in an email, purchasing the wrong item, or permanently deleting a document. These illustrate possible consequences; they are not measurements of how often such mistakes happen.

Privacy exposure and a larger blast radius
The more accounts, applications, files, and actions an agent can reach, the more a mistaken or redirected action could affect. Screen captures and tool results are part of documented computer-use interactions, but where those data are processed and retained depends on the specific product and deployment. Do not assume one vendor’s data-handling practices apply to every assistant; check the documentation for the particular tool and environment.
Safeguards are not guarantees
Vendors describe controls such as classifiers, confirmations, monitoring, and checks for malicious instructions or sensitive domains. These may reduce risk, but their existence is not independent proof that prompt injection or errors are eliminated. The MIT AI Agent Index research team’s 2025 index found that, among its 30 indexed agents, 8 had known incidents or reported security concerns; 25 disclosed no internal safety results, and 23 had no third-party testing information. These are documentation findings about that sample, not a count of all agents or proof that undisclosed testing never occurred.

How to reduce risk before granting access
- Use an isolated environment. Prefer a separate browser profile, isolated runtime, or virtual machine for experimentation. Microsoft recommends using a virtual machine with no access to sensitive data or critical resources; OpenAI likewise advises an isolated browser or VM in its computer-use guidance.
- Limit what the agent can reach. Give it only the sites, files, accounts, and actions required for the task. If a signed-in session is unnecessary, use a logged-out mode where available. Avoid exposing unrelated personal or work material.
- State a bounded task. Ask for a specific outcome rather than broad discretion, such as “review everything and do what is needed.” Make clear which actions are permitted and which require you to decide.
- Treat encountered content as untrusted. Instructions inside a web page, document, or tool result do not change your intent or authorize new actions. If content asks the agent to disclose information, change the task, or bypass a safeguard, require it to stop and ask you.
- Require approval for consequential actions. Check details before sending information, making a purchase, deleting or destructively editing files, or taking another action that is difficult to reverse. Review what will be submitted, not just the assistant’s summary.
- Bound and supervise the run. Set reasonable limits on steps, time, or cost where the tool permits; know how to cancel the run. When it finishes, verify the actual account or file state rather than relying only on the completion message.
How to judge an assistant’s computer-use setup
For personal use, identify what the agent can see and control, whether it runs in a sandbox, virtual machine, browser, or host environment, and how access to accounts and files is restricted. Check whether sensitive actions require approval, whether runs can be stopped, and what logs or results you can inspect. For an organization, review these controls together: model behavior alone does not define the security boundary.
Published benchmark scores can help describe performance on particular tasks, but they are not a personal-computer safety probability. In its January 2025 announcement, OpenAI reported 38.1% success on OSWorld for its computer-using agent, 58.1% on WebArena, and 87% on WebVoyager. OpenAI noted that WebVoyager tasks were relatively simple and that performance on more complex WebArena tasks remained below human performance. Those task-specific scores do not estimate the chance that an assistant will safely complete your own work, nor the probability of a prompt-injection attack succeeding.
