Compare music-streaming services using the same country, plan type, and household size, then check whether each service has the recordings you actually want and whether your playback setup can use its advertised audio formats. Prices and format labels alone do not establish which service is the best fit.
Start with a fair, like-for-like price comparison
Record the country, currency, tax treatment, plan tier, and number of people who will use the subscription. A family plan’s total monthly price is not comparable to one person’s individual-plan price. Compare recurring rates rather than introductory offers, and confirm the current amount before subscribing because prices and offers can change.

The following are rates shown on the providers’ US pages accessed October 4, 2026. TIDAL lists prices plus applicable taxes; Apple’s page presents US rates. They are not a global price comparison.
| Service and plan | Listed US monthly price | Household or plan detail |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Music Individual | $11.99 | Individual plan |
| Apple Music Family | $19.99 | Shareable with up to five other people |
| Apple Music Student | $6.99 | Apple says Apple TV access is included for students |
| TIDAL Individual | $11.99 plus applicable taxes | Individual plan |
| TIDAL Family | $19.99 plus applicable taxes | Up to six members |
| TIDAL DJ | $19.99 plus applicable taxes | Requires compatible DJ software |
Apple’s listed prices and offers are specific to its US page, and TIDAL’s price display includes applicable taxes as an additional qualification. TIDAL’s Student price was inconsistent across parts of its official pages, so it is not included. Current readable plan details were not available from the official Spotify, Amazon Music Unlimited, and YouTube Music pages checked for this comparison; their prices and features are therefore not stated here. Check each provider’s current page for your location rather than treating an unavailable figure as zero or assuming an older rate still applies.

Check the catalog against your own listening
Headline catalog totals are provider claims about scale, not independent audits and not proof that a particular album or recording is available. Apple advertises over 100 million songs, while TIDAL advertises over 180 million. Those figures, shown on the providers’ official pages accessed in 2026, do not by themselves establish which service has the better catalog for an individual listener.

- The version you prefer: original release, remaster, deluxe edition, live recording, or soundtrack version.
- Explicit and clean editions where relevant.
- Specialist recordings, such as classical works, where composer, performer, ensemble, and recording can matter as much as the album title.
Try the same searches in each service and check that the result is the intended recording, not simply an album with a similar name. Apple Music Classical is included with Apple Music and is designed for classical catalog browsing and search; Apple describes its classical catalog as the world’s largest, a company claim rather than an independent measurement. Catalog fit is personal: one missing album may matter more to you than a much larger overall total.

Understand what audio-quality labels do—and do not—tell you
Audio labels describe formats or capabilities, not a universal ranking of what listeners will hear. A service can offer lossy, CD-quality lossless, higher-resolution lossless, or immersive audio, but the result for a particular track depends on the available source and the playback chain. Neither lossless nor a higher sample rate guarantees an audible improvement for every listener. No controlled listening test or universal audible ranking is established here.
| Service | Provider-described formats and limits | Practical qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Music | Lossless up to 48 kHz; Hi-Res Lossless from 48 kHz to 192 kHz; Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos | Apple says Hi-Res Lossless requires external equipment such as a USB DAC. Large lossless files use more bandwidth and storage than standard AAC. |
| TIDAL | FLAC is stereo lossless; HiRes FLAC is above 16-bit/44.1 kHz, with files as large as 24-bit/192 kHz; Dolby Atmos is also listed | Max selects the best source available for each track from HiRes FLAC, FLAC, or AAC, so not every recording is necessarily available in the top format. TIDAL advises checking DAC support for HiRes FLAC. |
These descriptions are from Apple Music and TIDAL’s Sound Quality page. The word “lossless” has a specific technical meaning: Apple says, “Lossless audio compression reduces the original file size of a song while preserving all of the data perfectly.” That describes preservation of the audio data in compression; it does not say that every listener will hear a difference from another format.

Trace the playback chain before paying for higher quality
A service’s maximum format is useful only if the particular track and your devices can deliver it. Check the entire path: the track’s available source, app quality setting, phone or computer, connection, DAC where needed, and headphones or speakers. Wireless devices and other parts of a setup may affect which format reaches the listener, so do not assume that selecting a high-quality setting alone establishes high-resolution playback.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Confirm whether your usual phone, computer, car system, speakers, television, or smart speaker supports the service.
- Check the app’s streaming and download quality settings, and whether those settings apply on cellular data, Wi-Fi, and offline downloads.
- If Hi-Res Lossless is a priority, check the device and DAC requirements. Apple says an external device such as a USB DAC may be required; TIDAL advises checking DAC support and recommends wired or Wi-Fi connections for the full experience.
- Account for larger downloads: lossless files use more bandwidth and storage than standard AAC, according to Apple.
Compatibility matters for everyday use too. Apple lists availability on Apple platforms as well as Android, Windows, Sonos, smart TVs, and other devices. Confirm support for your own combination of devices rather than assuming that a service works identically across every model or app.

Compare the extras that affect your routine
Once price, catalog, and playback are understood, weigh only the additional features you will use. Apple includes offline downloads and Apple Music Classical. TIDAL lists ad-free offline listening, personalized mixes, and editorial playlists; its DJ plan provides catalog access through compatible DJ software, and select partners support additional functions such as stem separation and offline mode. Plan features and partner support can vary, so check the provider’s current terms for the specific use you have in mind.
- Shared listening: compare the number of allowed household members and whether the account setup suits your household.
- Offline use: check download availability and storage demands for the quality you choose.
- Specialist browsing: consider Apple Music Classical if its dedicated classical search and browsing tools suit your collection.
- DJ workflow: consider TIDAL DJ only if you use compatible DJ software and value its supported catalog integration.
- Immersive playback: check whether the tracks you care about are available in Dolby Atmos and whether your equipment supports that playback path.
Use a short personal trial to settle close choices
If a trial or other evaluation option is currently available in your region, compare the services with the same tracks and listening setup. This is a practical way to decide whether the catalog, interface, and sound suit you; it is not a substitute for checking the service’s terms and current price.
Quick Recap
- Make a short playlist of familiar tracks, including recordings where you know the version matters.
- Use the same headphones or speakers and, as far as practical, the same device and connection for each service.
- Match playback volume as closely as you can. Louder playback can be mistaken for better sound.
- Check the selected quality and whether each track actually offers that format.
- Decide based on your own priorities: music availability, ease of use, household fit, and whether any audio difference matters to you.
